People are annoying.
I use mics with friends, and I'll turn it on when the other people are talking and aren't obnoxious. But the ratio of annoying randoms versus the helpful randoms when it comes to talking is... pretty bad.
Besides, you can complete silver fairly easily without mics. Plus, you only really need mics for Phantoms; everything else can be garnered from sound cues. Sure, there's nobody to tell you there's a turret around that corner, but a turret makes a very distinct sound. You should be able to tell for yourself. Same with an Atlas or Nemesis.

Yeah I played with a dude who didn't have a mic. The rest of our team quit on us on Wave 1 or 2 of Silver. We ended up destroying the opposition all the way up to Wave 10 using teamwork. Sometimes you don't really need a mic to work together. Just stay with that person and you should be fine. If you split up, you die.
this
just so long as you play smart you dont needa mic (I tend to play engineer and stick to the group while laying down CC

I like this human. He understands.
Also, my voice is too shrill and squeaky to inflict on random multiplayer groups. I'll use a microphone when the full game is released and my durable eared friends play.

Besides, I can cover my teammates and revive them without having to listen to them singing or screaming for half an hour.

You only need mic on silver or gold.
You can breeze through silver without mic's. On gold it is a necessity though.

agreed. I hate playing with people who don't have mics. Not so much a problem on bronze, but for silver and up then yes I think they're needed.
If you and your team needs mics on silver to succeed then I'm sorry but you and your teammates aren't very good at this game, sorry.

Seriously, do people not know what "co-op" stands for?
I know what it stands for. I also know that there is a keybind for typing out text messages that has been for some reason disabled. I'll turn on my mic when Bioware turns on text chatting.
Actually, I'll try turning on my mic and seeing how it works, but deactivating text chat for the demo was a very odd decision.

I've been through so many matches that have made it to complete extraction without mics
In fact, the vast majority of the time people either don't have mics or have them but don't talk, and we still manage to work pretty damn well as a team.
Agree with this, If your reviving and watching out for your teammates the mic isn't as important.

Besides that the mic options are limited on PC (no sound sensitivity).

On Bronze, it doesn't really matter.
On Silver, you can get away with no having a mic if the other players in the lobby are pretty well equipped and experienced.
On gold, fuhgeddaboutit
NOT TRUE! just finished a gold round with no one on a mic... I have a mic... just didn't feel like using it

I went as far as wave 6 on gold without a mic, I believe he was talking about completing all 11 waves.

But whatevs I don't stress. I'll use mine from time to time (not for mindless chatter) and if you don't like it, mute me.

Was that really necessary? It's comments like that that tend to devolve forums into rants where people alternate screaming "TRYHARD!" at everyone better than them and "BK!" at everyone worse than them.
I mean, as long as someone is familair enough with the game to know what to do, you don't really have grounds to criticize how well they can do it.

This is how I feel. I hate being yelled at by a 12 year old who died and is now telling me what to do when I am soloing the wave. I only use my mic with players I know.

While I can imagine its frustrating to those players that want to be over-controlling, mics aren't really needed when everyone is a decent player.
I could see using a mic to point out where they atlas spawned or give notification of turrets locations, but if you have people making requests that they need help with something, then that means that you got too far away from the group on your own.
Most of my games that are played through to extraction are done quietly by people that know what they should be doing. Somebody yelling, "Boom!" through the mic everytime they kill something isn't all that helpful.
No, it means that the group are being idiots fighting in the LZ when the objective is on the other side of the map. It's like fighting in the middle in Warsong gulch in WoW, right up to the getting angry when someone suggest that they, oh, I don't know, GO AFTER THE OBJECTIVE.
