I have a very mixed opinion about this subject. Sometime I praise those DLC and other time I feel like they're trying to suck me dry.

To be honest I(we) don't have enough indepth/insight about this. Maybe more transparency about this would help about all the hate. Because let's be honest. A lot of people just imagine some fatso CEO with yellow teeth counting all the money in his office and laughing like a maniac and such a image ****** people off.

It's feel like those 'tv' insurance you purchase in retail store. I always feel like someone is watching me and laughing is ass off.

"It's a sodding Prothean" That's just classic.

Thats a really good video by the way I suggest everyone watch it. Although I've never been assaulted by store clerks trying to selll me a used copy over a new one.

Cheers Al 75 for posting it.

This bit from that article posted here caught my eye:

“All DLC for the PC version is and will remain FREE. That’s not likely
to be the story for the Xbox version, because of certain Microsoft
policies that need to be followed.
But on PC, once you buy our game, you
don’t need to worry about any additional costs – we will provide all
updates, including those featuring new content, for free.
"

Well, well...

That's an interesting tidbit...

EDIT: This is from the Witcher article, btw.  It's not about ME3.

Sorry. I own me 1, 2 and da 1, 2, all NWN stuffs with multiple compies...

Why did you have to make this decision! Now I will never know how it all ends because I can't support a game with major story day 1 dlc.If you don't change your mind about this stupid idea, my collection of your games are hereby ended.

What does this mean?

I love DLC. Keep it coming, I'll probably keep buying it, especially if it's of the same caliber as LotSB and Arrival.

Pre-Order Bonus DLC and Store/Site Bonus DLC are the one thing I hate about DLC nowadays. Look at the CE of Mass Effect 3, you should get N7 Armor and N7 assualt rifle just for ordering the collectors edition, but no, thats a "Gamestop" Exclusive.

As for general DLC, developers have been jerks towards their fans, take the Horde Command Pack for Gears of War 3. Maps and content, already on the disc, cost of dlc: 800 mspoints or free with Season Pass (2400 msp for 4 dlc installments). Also those same 3 maps were free in a booster pack 20 days later...yeah.

LotSB and Arrival were excellent because they were made well after the game was finished, [the former] tied together a large storyline from the comics and provided a good few hours of new and entertaining content, and [the latter] tied the end of ME2 to the start of ME3. They were more like traditional (GOOD) DLCs which I am happy to see more of.

Charging money for this seems a little bit...wrong.

I know that they're trying to combat people who purchase used...but why not package it for free in new/sealed copies?!

It's really getting ridiculous. I wish there was another mainstream, active community for mass effect. There are definitely some cool and insightful people on here but there are so many pubescent whiny little jack*sses that 75% of the threads are just complaints about dumb sh*t.

I'm with you, don't get the hate at all.  If you don't want it, don't buy it.  Me, my CE was preordered a long time ago, so I'm not paying anything extra for it.

BTW, for all those folks objecting to 'Day 1 DLC', would it really have made you feel better if they'd waited 4 months and THEN released the exact same content?

I miss expansions. :(

edit: Yes, that is my only argument why DLC is bad. DLC just don't have the same "large-pack-of-goodies"-feel. :<

If you have a problem with things like dlc and redeem codes, blame the used game market. It's a double edge sword.

This, I religously buy games used ever since the Prince of Persia reboot burned me, except for Halo anniversary, and Mass Effect 3 but shut up about that: not my point.
I buy a game used and if I want DLC for it I will buy the DLC, but not those weapon packs or skin packs. I understand companies trying to keep the revenue stream going with DLC and it is better than the alternative, discs that have coding so they will only run on your console and can't be traded in because of that.

"Optional" is a loathesome word in reference to content in games like Mass Effect. This is a PROTHEAN SQUADMATE, in terms of story this is a massive deal. What's more is that this squadmate was originally in the full game and central to the plot, but because the script was leaked now I have to dish out another tenner so I can have a more rounded experience of ME3 because, again, Javik is a big deal.

The ultimate point of this is that Bioware has pulled out a dirty sales tactic here, not just with Javik's availability, but with all this day 1 DLC and extra content in general. I can understand rewarding fans with things, but when they start advertising "ZOMG SUPER POWERFUL STUFF WITH THIS BOOK" it starts to raise some eyebrows.

It worries me more that people are readily able to accept this and not give it a second thought, then go out of their way to make personal attacks at the people who are pointing this out. Perhaps you're the one who needs to reevaluate who the "prepubescent whiny little jack@ss" is. This is most definitely not "dumb sh*t" to complain about.

DLC when done right, i.e. sizable episodes like LotSB they can add to an already great game and help longevity.  But it's totally different when it comes to the disgusting fleecing of gamers with DLC that is subtracted from the suposedly 'full' game.
Of course you can argue that you don't 'need' that character or mission, extra armour or couple of weapons, or skins,  but it's the principle of the thing.

Can you imagine if the movie industry started pulling this **** and started removing buildings or trees or minor characters from the copies of dvds, and started charging for putting them back? Or the music biz removed the intro to track 7 or the bassline to track 3.  'Cause ,you know, It's not that big a deal to miss some secondary character who had no effect on the main plot, or the intro in that one track beacuse the rest of the song is still intact.

Give it a year, and I can see you'll have to  pay extra to actually complete the game.   This is the slippery slope folks.

The problem is that this is not just about DLC... it is obvious that since this is coming out on DAY ONE that it was part of the original development cycle and could be added into the game. Armors/weapons/skins/cosmetic stuff is all fine but to add a NEW squadmate that is so important to the story, and make you pay 20 DOLLARS EXTRA? or 10 on launch(whoever falls for the 20 bucks is a moron) this is simply ridiculous.

I am a huge fan of Mass Effect but to make me pay extra for content that so obviously should be in the game most likely is a punch to the balls for the time and money I've put into this franchise previously and the other people I got to buy Mass Effect who wouldn't have tried it otherwise based on my word of mouth. Now I'll be telling people the opposite, Bioware and EA are trying to screw us out of story, content and gameplay that should be included and showing 0 support for their fanbase.

Wake the hell up Bioware.

The game BioWare/EA is playing is absolutely appalling.

Don't get me wrong, I love DLC. When it's done right.

It's like.. I don't know, do they sit down to review the complete product, pick a fun mission and say "Damn, that was cool. Alright, pull that from the game and release it as day 1 DLC"

You're breaking my heart, Bioware. It takes two to tango, and my feet are getting tired..

Absolutely. It has just reached the point of pure stupidity now, and the way things are going this extortion is only going to get worse.

Day 1 DLC lets publishers cash in even if the game bombs. If you total the DLC it will cost you more than the game.

Day 1 DLC usually is either pre-order incentives or included with new copies, both don't cost you extra.  Those with collector's editions get extra for paying more, which is just fine.

So unless you're buying a used-game (which the money doesn't go towards the publisher/developer), there really isn't an issue with the Day 1 jazz.

Sorry thats what I meant stuff you download on day 1 with codes in the game because you pre-ordered.

"Pre-order our game and we will give you lots of free stuff and if it sucks stuffU we already got your money".

He's referring to the CE editions.

i posted this in another thread:

yeah this trend of purposefully leaving out companions to shaft the player is too far. Zaeed was fine because he was FREE.

They could have put the 'ashes' companion in the full game but chose to sell separately.

So the question is, is it worth it? Zaeed was not worth 10 bucks and if this companion is anything like him it is not worth it but if we are missing out on story critical plot points because for not getting him it is messed up

in  a nutshell do not strip content from the game pre launch and sell it seperately

if you work on new content post launch charging for it is fair

They are probably testing the waters. If they get away with this, we'll probably have to buy other, unrelated products to get the full game. Oh wait...
