After some testing, I have finally figured out how to stylishly slide over cover.

The trick lies in how you enter cover. You MUST enter cover via sprint (aka storm) by holding down the storm/cover button. Then as soon as you enter cover, tap the storm/cover button again, and voila, you are sliding over cover with style.
Remember, you must not enter cover the usual way by just pressing the cover button to take cover and then tap it again. This way, your character will vault and not slide over it.
Also, note that not all cover objects are slidable. Usually, only the smaller ones are.

And that's about it. I hope this helps some of you that have been wondering how to perform this stylish maneuver.

Happy sliding. :)

I never really got this one down. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I usually just mash the spacebar/A right in front of cover while sprinting. Seems to (kind of) work.

Thanks for the tips. I usually accidentally jump over when I actually wanted to stay in cover :o

Just doubletab the space key when running up to a cover, much more reliable.

Yeah, I just storm towards the cover and mash space repeatedly, it's about as reliable as I can get it. I still don't have a good "feel" of it beyond that.

I've always wanted to pull off a Dukes of Hazzard while dodging machine gun bullets.

I think the most fun place for this is the bottom of the ladder in the middle of noveria - there's that small piece of cover there. Sprint at the cover, slide over it and straight onto climbing the ladder! :)

I have my Sprint/Cover keys bound to Shift and E. Makes for quick maneuvering and and easy cover-slides.

I usually just mash my spacebar as I get near cover that I want to slide over.

Seems to work 99% of the time.

People really have problems with slide? I never knew that.

Yeah I don't get it either. It only fails when you approach the edge of a barrier. Glacier's drop zone has a notorious valley of two of these.

Feel ya bro. It's a killer when you think "now a nice slide over the cover" and you're stuck at the end of the cover. Happens all the time.<_<

Those desks in Benning tend to catch you with their corners too.
