Have Assault Rifles been severely nerfed?

I loved my AR in ME1 and 2 - it balanced out the lack of powers for the soldier (esp for ME2 since the soldier was the only one who could get it). In the ME3 demo, however, the good ol' reliable AR seems to do as much damage as a SMG and is wildly inaccurate to boot. As a result, my Solider has gone from my most loved character to my least favorite.

My Mattock VI is working just fine. Cutting through enemies like a hot knife through butter.

We've only seen three assault rifles so far. Don't worry about it so much. And all weapons are available for all classes.
Side note: I live the avenger now. I hope the vindicator is still awesome.

Automatic Assault Riffle were always crap on high difficulty. They follow the same trend in ME3 especially since no gun is now more effective againts HP/Shield/Barrier/Armor.

Burst and non-automatic gun still kick ass when it comes to high damage, maximum accuracy and a higher number of ammo than sniper riffle.

My guess is the Vindicator will be slightly nerfed and sound WAY different. Like a typewriter or something...

I imagine it depends on the model of gun and the upgrades you stick it with. For what it's worth, I thought the Mattock Heavy Rifle was as awesome as ever. Even if that technically doesn't count as an Assault Rifle in the strictest sense.

It was massively upgraded judging from the data.

1. It's as light as the Avenger.
2. Each burst deals almost 200 damage.
3. It has 50% more spare ammo than in ME2.

If your referring to the weapons in MP, I think they probably have been  nerfed a bit. The light-machince gun was a beast in ME2, but it's way to powerful for multiplayer. I think some of the weapons will be nerfed for multiplayer, but not for the campaign. Im a big fan of first person shooters and you do see a lot of weapons that are great in the campaign get nerfed for the multiplayer.

Yes, I was - and this probably explains everything. Thanks for the insight.

"the good ol' reliable AR seems to do as much damage as a SMG and is wildly inaccurate to boot" I dont believe you. The Mattock and Avenger are insanely accurate.

Truth be told I feel like the smg could use a buff compared to the other weapons

"my Revenant Light Machinegun + scope just seems wrong " :pinched: then don't use a scope on it....

I was shocked by the Mattock at first in Multiplayer.
Tried it when I unlocked it and found it's punching-power gone.

Now that I've seen how the Avenger evolved, I'll wait until the Mattock has a higher level, before I make my final judgement.

I would argue the SMG got the short short straw this time around (though it dominated ME2, so ok).

It makes sense though, there is no legitimate reason that someone could handle a SMG, but not an assault rifle (other than gameplay balance). Weight restictions and preference okay, but "special" training when you can already use a fully auto tempest just doesn't compute.

The Revenant wasn't crap. The only issue with it was that only the soldier could use it and the Mattock, which was already overpowered, was crazy good with adrenaline rush. But it was still a good gun and a good option for people who didn't have the firepower pack. Geth Pulse Rifle had a niche for levels with high shield/barrier levels as well.

The mattock is great for getting a few headshots in. Actually, with a scope it's more or less the Viper from ME2, but better at close range.

This bit about the weapons not being specialized PISSED me off, I wasn't sure but was suspicious of my SMG's pathetic attempt to deshield enemies in MP. Why would I use those ****ty little guns if they have no use? Terrible accuracy, laughable damage, and no circumstancial use other than spare weight which is countered by the beastlyness of all pistols. The changes made to shotguns and AR's feel really balanced and nice to me except the sounds which now make me feel like I'm playing with my little brothers' toy guns, I used to be able to feel the Mattock's blast and the Phlanx used to make me jump but now they sound no more menacing than a dart gun. Snipers, specifically the viper, remain beast as hell which is fine since they require such a high level of skill to use effectively.

I never really warmed up to the Mattock. Either I would use the Revenant, or the Viper.
