Personally, I think Guild Wars offers too much flash, and "eye-candy".
Some of us like flash and eye candy. Two of the biggest draws of this game for me is that I get to nuke opposition with overblown magic and get to play character dress up. Ultra realism or grittiness is tiring. As you say though, it is a personal preference.

Also, I really like the ideas behind it, and the developers - but there's really little content and difficulty for this game. It would be much more awesome, for example, if when you die, you're dead. Until some other player rescurrects you, you cannot play that char. This kind of game I'd play.
I'm all for challenging gameplay, but would personally hate that. At most, I would prefer to take a penalty for dying. The two reasons why are simple:
Firstly, playing games should ideally be a fun experience. If I pour endless hours grinding for levels and loot, only to have my character locked out until a good samaritan strolled by and raised me, it would suck. Not "what a shame" suck. More like "I will now split this disc in half and uninstall the game from my hard drive" levels of suck. Granted, there is a chance a generous player could show up in short order. However, there is also a chance my character could rot where she died for hours, or even days. If it was an optional, fine. There are NWN PWs I enjoyed with optional permadeath. Otherwise, no thanks.
Secondly, a great many people I have come across trying these games are ***hats. All it takes is one griefer for a harsh death penalty to get very frustrating.
