Will the prothean be an important part of the story or will he/she be similar to zaeed and kasumi? I mostly play mass effect for the story as the gameplay is not very good (imo) and I'm curious if I should get the more expensive version of the game that comes with this DLC or if I should stick with getting the standard edition. My initial assumption is that if the companion was important to the story then Bioware would have included him in the game but if someone has a definitive answer it would be appreciated. Thanks

He`s not important to the story. I`d get him anyway though, because he`s awesome.

I'm rather annoyed that it is a DLC character.

Making it DLC kind of diminishes its importance, and if they are going to do something as cool as having a Prothean as a squad mate...it makes you want to believe that it would be important.

Understatement of the century cycle.

Okay; he`s super-ultra-mega-awesome.

I think the most he'll provide to the "story"...is war assets. and maybe a tiny bit of perspective (like Kasumi)

He reveals new information you can't otherwise learn about the protheans. Especially in relation to Thessia, he's a very critical character to the story. It's a serious shame that he's DLC only.

Well, you'd think he'd be important since hes a Prothean. But I can't see him being THAT important if he's just a DLC character. But, what do I know?

I don't mind spending the extra money if he is important to the story although I admit it would be a bit odd to have a important character as DLC especially on release day. I guess I'll stick with the stand edition as most people believe he is unimportant to the story.
On another note since he's a prothean does that mean that only shepard would be able to understand him since only he has the cipher?

he isn't vital, he's a tribute to the long time fans. nothing more. you pay for waht you get

i dont understand what the big deal is...protheans are just the first step in this huge ass story....Yes they are important, but people are acting like they are as important as the reapers, they're acting like they have to pay ten extra dollars to beat the game, its rediculous. get over yourselves, this is how the world works

yes I played ME1 the most

EDIT:
Muezick  I wasn't complaining about the DLC I was asking if it was essential to the story or not...

He doesn't reveal anything relevant to the Reapers or the cycle. According to the leak (which is suspect at best) he reveals interesting flavor text about galactic culture. But that's it.

Next DLC: T-Rexes survived and can now form a battlegroup with the Rachni.

He's not important to my story that's for sure - from what I here about him, he's completely unappealing to me as a character.

From the script, it seemed pretty important, however that might have been changed and/or it referred to another prothean

So if he's not important to the story, he's important enough to charge me $10 extra?

****ing joke of a company Bioware has become.

Kasumi wasn't a prothean. She also didn't reveal critical backstory that was otherwise unavailable.

Uhhh, I read the script.  NOTHING he reveals is relevant to the Reapers or the cycle of destruction that you wouldn't learn already through the course of the game, according to the leak.

Everything else he says is flavor text.

If it turns into a throw away character like zaeed then they are doing a huge disservice to the universe of Mass Effect. I had already decided not to buy the game because of Origin but this just reinforces the point. If anything to do this character justice it needs to be handled like shale was in Dragon Age.
A character that was fully integrated into the plot and was free with all new purchases of the game. Any other way it'll just feel like they are nickel and dimming their fans.
