this is a Copy paste of a great post
I'm sure you have all, or at least a majority of you, have
seen the information regarding the From Ashes DLC. Considering it has all be
publicly announced now, what I'm about to say shouldn't really be a spoiler.
The DLC features a character, most specifically, a Prothean. For those of you
who’ve played the previous instalments, you know how important this character
is. Their race is embedded into the entire story. They’re pretty much as
important as the Reapers. They’re a huge part of the lore and as a Mass Effect
fan I jumped for joy when I heard that such a character would make an
appearance.

But, soon enough, my joy turned unto despair.

To my utmost displeasure, I discovered that the DLC was only
free to those who had purchased the Collector’s Edition of Mass Effect 3, and
would cost money to those who only brought the regular edition. Now, if this were
a minor character, I wouldn’t mind. If it was a few missions, I wouldn’t mind.
But this is a Prothean! One cannot describe how important this single character
is to the Mass Effect universe. And the fact that precious development time has
gone into him, and some of us who don’t purchase the DLC will not be able to
experience him is downright appalling. What about the people who don’t have
Xbox Live or PSN? But are very big Mass Effect fans? What about them? They lose
out on such a MASSIVE character.

Rather than continue this large rant, I would like to direct
you to a video done by a man by the name of TotalBiscuit, the Cynical Brit, who
has really summed up what I am trying to say.

It is 25 Minutes long, and I’m sure some of you have already
watched it, but he explains, quite thoroughly and clearly, why I and he, and
many others are very, very annoyed.

In the video, he suggests that we, those who do not think
that day one DLC that has been cut from the game, used up precious development time
to make, should be limited to certain people, should boycott the game. I,
sadly, have been put into a position where I have to agree.

I just don’t have the money to keep doing stuff like this.
What happened to the likes of Zaeed? Free DLC? Sure, it was only free to those
who purchased a brand new copy of the game, but that was to crack down on
people purchasing used copies of games, as they stop the Developer and
Publisher from earning money, to develop and publish further titles.

Many pc players are boycotting the game already because of
the fact you can only buy the game on Origin.

I would like to let everyone know, before I get attacked
with angry comments, that I am a huge Mass Effect, and a huge Bioware fan. I
have played through Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, and some of Biowares previous
titles such as Knights Of The Old Republic, countless times. I’m currently in
the process of purchasing The Old Republic as my choice of MMO, but this, this
is just too far.

And they only way to stop Bioware, EA, and anyone else from doing
this is to show them that we, the consumers, the fans, will not have it.

If you wish to join the boycott, do so, if you do not, that
is fine. I’m not here to judge you based on that.

Calling out TB on not boycotting Deus Ex with their Tong DLC which was retailer preorder pacific, which you could not even get afterwards. A bit hypocritical.

so your complaint is that you don't get for free what other people paid an extra $20 to get for free? yeah this is a reasonable argument for sure

The $20, I always assumed, that I paid for the collector's edition was for the art book, collectible tin, and N7 warfare gear/

The problem is that the DLC is clearly meant to be released with the game. I think the same thing happened with Dragon Age: Origins and one of the DLCs. If anything, this should be more like the Cerberus Network DLC in ME2. Included in all new copies of the game, but in used copies, you need to shell out some cash. Cerberus Network also included one of the two DLC characters, some armor, and the Firewalker pack.

This kind of business practice HAS TO STOP. Bioware is exploiting its playerbase and it is unacceptable. I love the series but I will not be supporting this.

Yeah, but that wasn't it a Mass Effect game, so it's different somehow to these self-entitled gamers.

You made a strange assumption. Yeah, the info is listed in a bad spot on origin (it's part of the N7 pack), but it's been known since the CE was announced that it includes a companion.

The problem is that the DLC is clearly meant to be released with the game.

Not clearly that at all. Released at the same time, yes. With, no. That's not a trivial distinction. Time frames of release for DLC and discs mean completely different things.

Yeah I would that that since it's day one DLC, by definition it's actually not meant to be released as part of the game.

People complained about that too but this is on another level. Protheans have been part of ME from the start. It's goes way beyond the exiled prince who was just another character.

This is on the scale of making Tali or Garrus optional.

If its a DLC character then its not intrinsic to the plot. Think of it as a Kasumi...an unnecessary character, but an interesting one. I'm probably upgrading to the Collector's edition to get this one, since it will likely cost about 10 extra to get anyways, so i might as well get the loot, artbook would be cool etc. I'm on PC btw.

If you don't have internet, then you should probably try to take your system somewhere where yo can log on and download! B)

Kasumi as fun as she is (I got all the free stuff with ME2 PS3) is just another human. This is a Prothean it's not on the same level.

How about instead they just charge everyone $70 for the main game which is what publishers will just do if people do cause enough of a stir about it to do anything. It's business and its a Free Market economy, The game industry is far from the only industry where this happens.

Do you have the full game and the DLC? you have no clue what the prothean actualy adds to the game your just guessing and it makes that entire argument pointless and extremely weak.

I think of it more as Sebastian from DA2, a character clearly cut from the main content so bioware can make a quick extra buck, and the character ends up being just as important, or more important than most others in the game..

This is how capitalism works. If a company can increase profits, they will, up to and until they start losing profits or hit a wall. If you don't like it, wait for a discounted GOTY with a DLC bundle in a year or so... or just don't buy it.

But make no mistake, they won't stop just because it hurt your feelings that they're alienating you as a customer.
