So I have been playing mainly as an Asari adept for all my free time since friday, and now that I am trying my human characters, I am annoyed with their slow, clunky dashes (esp laterally) and lack of an awesome AOE heavy melee. I have no choice really, but to keep playing as her (at least until I unlock a Krogan)...thoughts?

Everyone has their preferences. I like my Drell Vanguard for instance.

Agreed. Human infiltrator is pretty awesome, and I use her more than I use my Salarian. I also prefer my Human Engineer to my Quarian, but that's because I screwed up her sentry turret points. I'd enjoy my Human Soldier, except that I've unlocked Krogan, and let's face it...he's boss. But the human soldier isn't so bad.
And human vanguard is infinitely better than Drell vanguard. That's not even a preference thing, that's just straight up real.

Salarian infiltrator is better for Silver/Gold than the Human fella, and I'm glad I got him in my starter pack :]

Subjective.
Some people use dashes too much to warrant an asari, since it drains her barrier.
Some people don't even use dashes and prefer to stay back and play support, like a Turian.
Some people prefer the mid-range support where they don't even need to melee often, and use drones or turrets for crowd control and constant assist points.
Basically, yes, asari are awesome, but they aren't hands down the best class/race. They're basically a necessity for Gold against Phantoms, but past that, they're easily replaceable by any other class/race with the right playstyle.

And, OP, if you think humans are slow, I have no idea why you want to play Krogan.

Krogan run faster than humans, but lack the ability to roll/dodge. OP also wanted a good heavy melee.
If you want a Human that has a good melee and can bullets to the face, go with a Human Vanguard.

Anything that deals with phantoms is one for me.
Asari are plain great especially for group support, heavy pistol only control the field.
Plus their warping leaps and dodges are just the best, AoE melee looks effective as well, next try will boost that side of the build.
Salarian infiltrator is a huge boon.
Reduction weight on sniper rifles, disable shields entirely on everything but gold foes.
Cloak, heavy pistol only or Sniper rifle as well, melee is effective as well.
This race / character is a good combination and can be used in almost everything.

I can't play anything but Drell now. Everything else feels waaay too slow. >.<
