In the ME3 demo,my male Shep was reinstated by Admiral Anderson with the rank of Commander, yet from ME1 to ME2,he was held the rank of Lt.Commander, while Ashley Williams went from Gunnery Chief to Operations Chief and to Lt.Commander by the time the Reapers invade earth. The question is this:if Shep is a Lt.CMDR,and Ash has the same rank, who's really in charge?Posted Image

Shepard. This has been discussed to death. In fact, Kaidan outranks Shep is he's the VS.

But still. Shepard.

You forgot about Kaidan. He's a major, and shepard is low-ranking scum.

Honestly I don't understand the confusion here.

Apocalyptic Reaper Invasion = All organization: GONE! Poof! You aren't going to give a DAMN about a fancy badge when it all starts to fall apart. Besides, if I were the Virmire Survivor I'd happily let Shepard take the burden. Who the hell wants to get stuck with the task of defeating the Reapers? Not me.

There  is no commander rank, there is lieutenant commander and staff comander. He is always refered to as commander so its likely he is STILL a lieutenant commander. That said he still outranks Ashley due simply to seniority and regardless of Kaidan outranking him he is still captain of the ship, unless Kaidan was given official command over the Normandy it is shepards command still regardless if Kaidan outranks sheppard.

i'm going to assume you don't serve in the military . . . rank always matters . . . it helps establish a chain of command . . . that's why you RARELY (and its extremely rare) see junior personnel in charge of senior personnel

Reaper Invasion. Not normal combat situation.

In a normal squad, this would be true. But when you have someone who is obviously more experienced in a commanding position and against the Reapers like Shepard, it's complete lunacy to question his leadership rights.

You can say that in emergency times, ranks are just fancy titles. Shepard it's the leader of those guys, so he is in charge.

If you're not convinced... Think on Shpard as the equivalent to the special rank of "General of the army" on US Army... So everybody follow him, no matter the rank.

with Kaiden technically he is shepards commanding officer if they followed alliance protocol.

But with Ashley Williams its more complicated because they do not say rank rank of commander, shepard because there is staff commander and lieutenant commander. If shepard is lieutenant commander then he is the same rank but if not them its the kaiden issue

how do we know "Shepard" has more command experience, obviously Kaidan could easily relinquish command to Shepard (and most likely would) but there's a reason why ppl get promoted, b/c they deserve it, b/c rank does matter

All BW had to do was promote Shepard to Captain . . . but COMMANDER Shepard had become to "big" and changing the name would be bad (tho i don't see how)

It doesn't matter who's officially in charge, all of the veteran crew would defer to Shepard anyway, especially if the Normandy crew is made up of surviving SR1 members and, if you saved them in ME2, surviving SR2 members.  Not to mention, Joker and EDI are loyal to Shepard.

Well if I had the option between the Major or the Commander who came back from the dead I'd have to go with the Commander it would seem he has a better understanding of what could happen if a wrong order is given. But that's just me.

Between ME2 and ME3, the Normandy was taken back by the Alliance, retrofitted (hence the changes you'll see on board) and was under the control of Admiral Anderson.
