I am the commander of the Normandy. Get back to work before you become acquainted with mister airlock.

The thing about Shepard being a Spectre is that not everyone chose to retain that status, and given the events of Arrival I wouldn't be surpised if the council stripped Shepard of his/her Spectre status, only way to find out is to play ME3 when it comes out

You forgot about Kaidan. He's a major, and shepard is low-ranking scum.

No he is not when Shepard gets the official rank of Commander he automatically becomes the commanding officer of the SR 2 again and Kaiden or Ashley become xo as in 1st officer of the ship . he is also the captain of it .

Clearly you ladies and gentlemen have been out of the loop for a while, did you not catch the last spoiler? Space Hamster has mutated and now commands the Normandy, he's currently locked and loaded and anyone who thinks he is not in command is in for a shock. You do things his way now or the airlock will be your next destination.

Have you played the demo? The whole Alliance council (or whatever it was) ended up asking Shepard what to do. That says a lot.

Between ME2 and ME3, the Normandy was taken back by the Alliance, retrofitted (hence the changes you'll see on board) and was under the control of Admiral Anderson.

Doesn't matter if Ashley is a Lt. Commander or Kaidan is apparently a Major (although I have issues with the Alliance's rank system to begin with - not to mention how high those two have advanced in two short years). Shepard's in charge of the Normandy, and that makes him the Captain, and the absolute sole sovereign, lord, and master of the ship.

Shepard ought to be referred to as "Captain" when s/he's aboard the Normandy to begin with.

I sort of feel bad for Anderson now. This is the second time Shepard's taken his ship away from him.

Umm.. How can they have TAKEN IT BACK. The Alliance never built the Normandy 2. Really dude.. If you are going to reply to things like this, at least try to look like you know what's going on. I mean you do WORK for bioware. :o

Cerberus stole the designs of the Normandy and re-created it as a private vessel.  Alliance took it into custody when they took Shepard as well, having good reason to get their modified tech out of the private sector and back under their control.

Really dude, if you are going to bash a BioWare employee at least know what information is already available.

Honestly I don't understand the confusion here.

Apocalyptic Reaper Invasion = All organization: GONE! Poof! You aren't going to give a DAMN about a fancy badge when it all starts to fall apart. Besides, if I were the Virmire Survivor I'd happily let Shepard take the burden. Who the hell wants to get stuck with the task of defeating the Reapers? Not me.

So I guess you wont be playing Shepard when you get your copy? Bad news for you, you cant control the squadmates :P

if the Alliance Council had no intention to actually fry Shep....and have an idea that Shep was telling the truth (as said so in the demo) than i dont believe they would have handed command of Shep's ship to someone else.

im still not sold on VS in ME3....i hope we have the chance to have a long ADULT conversation with VS...and the option to be pissed at VS...cuz everything AINT cool....reaper invasion or not.

I don't mean to be picky here but technically Kaidan & Shepard are the same rank!

Since nobody has done a canon rank structure for the Alliance, I assume BioWare used the US military rank structure. Shepard is a Lt. Commander (Navy rank) & Kaidan is a Major (Army & Marine rank) These two ranks are the equivelant of each other, & in that case, commission date decides who has command & since Shepard was a Lt.Commander whilst Kaidan was a Lieutenant, Shepard has seniority & command!!

No idea if anyone has replied to this, but you're incorrect.

The Alliance does have an official rank system and it differs from US Military ranks. It's in the codex.

On a side note, I always thought that it was weird that, as a matter of pride it seems, Shepard refers to him/herself as a Marine, yet follows the Navy side of the ranks.

In ME, the Marines are the ground forces of the Navy, not a separate corrpse

Shepard was promoted to Commander in ME1 after she/he became a SPECTRE, they were also made the Captain of the Normandy. So no matter what other ranks are involved, when on the Normandy he/she is in charge.

I don't recall being promoted specifically to Commander in ME1.

Correct, I'm wrong here.

Newnation wrote...
I thought Shepard started the game off as a Lt.cmdr and the only thing

No Lt. Commander, KainrycKarr has the right of it.

mghjr6 wrote...

I was just playing the beginning of ME1 last night. He/she was never
referred to as Lt. Commander. Just Commander, right from the beginning.
His/her rank has not changed since the start of ME1. There has been no
promotion. He/she is simply referred to as Commander for simplicity's
sake right from jump street. There was Medal of Honor on the desk in the
Captain's cabin on SR2 (Achievments), but no promotion. Then he/she
died, was brought back, and is just being reinstated. No promotion, yet.

*edit

On

the Navy side of the ranks.

Again you are correct. Shepard was just Commander in ME1. :D

Its described in one of the novels, Deception I believe, that he steps down as Councilor.  He realizes he isn't making any headway in politics and would be better suited back in uniform.

Traditionally, the commanding officer of a ship is the captain.

It is sometimes referred to as positional authority and it is common to see a commander as the commanding officer of smaller warships. Even when a higher ranking officer is aboard, the commanding officer is still the one in charge of the vessel and its crew with the same authority and responsibilities on that vessel as a full captain as on larger warships.
