Could just be a placeholder, it does happen in gaming development as it was shown with LOTSB in ME2.

Uhhh, no. There are several cut lines of dialog foreshadowing Shadow Broker, you have NO proof it was made post-development.

From what I gathered, Prothy was going to be something extra for the fans who got in early and pre-ordered the CE.
CE then proceeded to sell out fairly rapidly.
Bioware, to make it up to those who missed out, offers Prothy, something originally reserved for CE, to be available on release day for $10 (so those who didn't order the CE SAVE $10).

I remember this being "spoiled" when the CE was first announced. It said something along the lines of it containing extra side mission and character, "The Prothean". They took that last part out pretty quickly, but am I still the only one that remembers that? Oh, well, no big deal. Since it's a side mission, it's awesome, but I don't think it's going to have too much impact on the game as a whole.

Still, the last time I checked, Activision doesn't include DLCs in peripherals and the only DLC they are selling for CoD are maps. Don't know about GoW, but I believe it's the same.Daywalker315 wrote...
Next, the peripherals. You think this is the first game that's had peripherals branded with a game franchise? CoD, Gears of War, the list is very long. That's the problem - EA's only been giving boosts when you bought the game in pre-order (example - Bad Company 2) and not for peripheral. With all those statues and stuff you're probably gonna miss a lot of game experience.Exclusive DLC ... it's like MP unlocks you could most likely get anyway but you get a boost that way,
A lot of game experience? A couple guns you wouldn't otherwise get in MP is missing a lot of game experience? I can't even make a rational case to say you have valid points on that. Come on ...

- Making it clear that the extra, massively story important character was going to be extra from the beginning does not make it acceptable. Also, another version of the game that many (most) fans of the series would buy (including myself) is the normal 60 dollar version, which would be reasonably expected to be complete. While the game may be massive, and I'm not saying that it isn't massive, it is most certainly not complete without the Prothean, which is majorly important to the story and lore.
- "From Ashes" being complete after the game was certified makes no difference. The character and the associated side-quests should be included as a free DLC at least, the same as Shale was with DA:O.
- I will not be buying this game, or supporting this type of behavior.

Yet NONE of that dialogue was used in DLC or game. All of it was clearly scrapped dialogue that was going to be used in the main game, but wasn't. It came out nearly 9 months later, man, I'm pretty sure it wasn't made pre-release.RiouHotaru wrote...

Dialogue in demo come from the old script that was rewritten after the first leak.

Charging for day 1 dlc is bad enough, but when that dlc adds content and story within a story driven game, it goes from bad to ridiculous.
You're kidding ... you cancelled a pre-order for a version of the game that would have this DLC included? You realize it started as a bonus to people like you and I who ordered the DLC and they're letting other people get it for $10 ... wouldn't you be a little slighted if the thing they said was a bonus to you and I for ordering the CE ended up being given out for free to everyone anyway?
You act as if Bioware and EA never intended to sell this as a standalone, that's just silly - they weren't going to develop a new character for people who pre-ordered a certain edition... I mean... come on now.

And you're absolutely right, LotSb was the best piece of DLC released for ME2. However, it was released FAR after ME2 came out and was clearly made post-development. This is what DLC should be, not stripped from the game itself.TheOptimist wrote...
IMO, Lair of the Shadowbroker was a critical mission absolutely everyone who played ME2 should have played. It ended up DLC. Just because something is important in the context of the Mass Effect universe doesn't make it essential to the game. I should know, I played through twice before LotSB was released, and still considered it a complete game.
Except that if you looked for them, you could find sound files suggesting that the shadowbroker was originally going to be a mission in the game and was cut out during production. Again, we've known (or atleast suspected) the Prothean would be DLC for MONTHS. He has been planned as DLC since atleast the collectors edition became preorderable. Whatever you think about day 1 dlc, he was not stripped out of the game on a whim in the last two months or so.
TheOptimist wrote...
Almost all of the DLC for ME2 was planned before the game was finished (for instance, we know Kasumi was initially planned for it and then dropped to DLC), it makes no difference. At some stage during production, it was decided this character wasn't gonna fit in the game, and it was passed off to another team to be made as DLC. They are likely to make some money. He is also wholely unnecessary to the game. I could just as easily complete it with my existing team and never miss him.
Who cares if it's planned? As long as it's not finished right near the end of development, it's justified as DLC. This is not. This was finished before development and is a critical part of the game, unlike Kasumi who released a few months later and was not at all critical to the game. People will argue that the Prothean isn't, but if you've read that part of the leak, you would know that he IS.
He is not critical to the game. He is an important part of the lore, perhaps, but then, so is Kai Leng, and I have never purchased or read ANY of the ME books, so I know nothing about the guy other than what I've read here and on the wiki. Reading those books is not essential to playing the game, but they do increase your knowledge of the lore. Likewise, the Prothean increases your knowledge of the lore and the events in the ME universe, but he is not essential to the plot.

Take The Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC. It was done after the main game was completed and felt like an extra add-on to expand the story, as it should have been. No complaints.
Now take Zaeed. An unnecessary and just another human companion. With or without him you don't lose much. Another good DLC addition.
...now take the Prothean DLC. We have something that is an integral part of the Mass Effect lore and that was completed but taken out JUST so it could be sold for an extra $10. THAT is pathetic. That, is what is ruining DLC and games. Take ME 2 for example: what if Legion was DLC? No, he was not an integral part of the story, but you sort of need him to find out that there are some "nice" geth that don't follow the Reapers. But hey, let's just make him DLC so we can squeeze an extra $10 out of people, right?
Wrong. This is really screwed up, and I'm getting it anyway with the CE. Oh, and the "don't like it don't buy it" morons need to can it; this is certainly a legitimate complaint.
................................
Yes, I'm sure the game is relatively "complete" even when what you'd imagine would be such an important chunk was torn out to be sold separately, but that doesn't make it right. There are a lot of parts to games that could be taken out and sold separately... that doesn't mean you can do that.
...well okay technically they could do that all they want to, but that doesn't make it right. Purposefully removing something from the game (and not just any thing, but in this case a HUGE PART OF THE LORE) and then trying to sell it separately is just incredibly slimy. You can say to vote with you wallet all you want but by now, it's sort of too late to make any real impact. I know I personally have no intentions of buying a Bioware game again after ME 3 though.

Yeah instead since it wasnt done it should have just been cut out of the game entirely and not given at all since no one appreicates the fact that they even have access to it at all. I'm all for a return to the old days when content was just cut and not available later when people ****ed a whole lot less.

Not bad, Mr Gamble, not bad. I give you 7/10.
Too bad that you fail to consider:
- Long term fans who are not brainless compulsive consumers. Who wait to be sure if the final product is actually worth it.
- Long term fans who do not care for online gaming, through don't pay for the online capacity of the 360.
