Day 1 DLC(ala DA2), with a character you know was removed from the game to make more money. I fell for that once already, I won't do so again.(Strike 3).

And I'm out, I won't be touching ME3, until some those issues are fixed(especially issue 2), these are issues I feel passionate about Bioware, since you say you have a passionate fan base.

Feel free to show your work if you want, because if you can actually prove it, that would really clear up the arguments.

Well, it is like playing a game where the Dinosaurs left us messages about a doom that killed them off.
We then take this message, be the only one to read it, find a ghost of a Dinosaur, fight Dinosaurs that have been altered by this threat. Have a character who is an Archeologist and studied Dinosaur remains for all their life.
The whole story is about how the Dinosaurs warned us and tried to help us.

Then in the next game you are given a Dinosaur to ride around on. It is kinda a big deal..
Well thats how I see it anyway.

I'd agree with that, but how exactly is the lone dinosaur going to help you defeat the threat if the threat already killed off all of the other dinosaurs? Don't you think that if this one dinosaur ever had any device or knowledge that could defeat the threat, said device/knowledge would have been used successfully all those years ago and those of us in the modern day wouldn't be facing the crisis ourselves?

Why should it be included???  It's extra content.  It provides nothing for the main narrative of the game, just like Kasumi's Memories.  And yes, I know exactly what I'm talking about before you get on your high horse.

That's what is pissing me off right now, is a prothean, and provides nothing to the main narrative, that's increible. The level of writing went downhill.

Someone get this man a crown. We know this is true. The biggest writer in bioware EVER is no longer with bioware!

It bothers me a bit.  I've already stated that I just rather wish BioWare didn't bring Javik back into the picture after he was removed as a central component to the game (for good reason).

But that doesn't mean the writing will be bad just because we feel a character was underutilized.  The game seems to flow very well without him from what I've seen.  I do miss Drew though.

Again though, that's all opinion on our parts.  I'm just trying to make it clear that this is extra content and not removed, and that missing out on it is not detrimental to those playing the retail copy in the slightest.

We have no proof that the writing will be good either, we in fact have a lot of proof to be worried about, ME2 had no meaniful plot, BioWare doesn't proof read Deception, and they insert a prothean alive in a way that is not important to the main plot, for the purpose of selling you a DLC.

This is what's wrong with the game industry.  Why release a great, full featured game when you can just release a skeleton of a game and charge customers $10 a pop for DLC to gradually put flesh on the bones.

This is content produced prior to the release of the game, sold at release....that isn't available to people who paid full retail price for the game.  It's absolutely outrageous.

I'm actually less disappointed with Bioware than I am with the idiots who make it possible for companies to behave this way.

One squad mate and one mission makes the MASSIVE two-disc game crammed with content a skeleton of a game? You can't possibly logically defend that position.

Eh Its not as big of a deal as the internet is making it out to be.

That said. PC users SHOULD get it for free. Reason being that they are already being charged 10 dollars more than Console players.

I pre-ordered ME3 standart edition for 50 euros in Origin, don't complain about it and not going to cancel pre-order, nerdrage about this topic, day 1 dlc or dlc overal. You need to be picky theese days as for only few ME1 & ME2 dlc or any other game worth the time, money and joy. I guess it a story script oversight innitialy not to include a living and deeply developed Prothean squad mate in the main game irrespective of the edition. A Legion in ME2 is a perfec example of main plot or universe character the fans care and are interested about. If through preview and reviews this dlc will be rated as mediocre then i'll skip it...

If this DLC were released months later as an expansion pack, would there be such indignation?

This is more than a gun or an outfit, or some other small cosmetic change. This is a full blown character and mission that obviously was completed before the game has even be released. So it wasn't just "busy work" by some of the art guys that adds a little sparkle for those who want it, while the programmers were putting the finishing touches on the game.
Therefore, it feels as though BioWare/EA intentionally held a piece of the finished game back in order to get more than the entry fee out of its customers.

If this were released as a simple expansion a la Lair of the Shadow Broker, well after the release of the main game, then it would be assumed that this was simply extra, new content that deserves a fee. But as it is, being what it is, it does seem "shady", as others have said.

I'm personally undecided on whether I'll actually buy it. If it turns out to be in the same vein as Zaeed and Kasumi, I'll either be glad to have not spent the extra money, or annoyed that I have. I'd hope for more information regarding that, but I seriously doubt we'll hear from the people who are trying to sell it to us that it's essentially a shallow, "throwaway", non-essential extra.

I'm very disappointed with BSN right now, judging from the ridiculous reactions to this announcement.

Bioware/EA is giving owners of the Standard Edition a chance to buy, and download, something that we, who pre-ordered the Collector's Edition, are getting in the package. I figured that more folks would be friggin' happy at the prospect. But I guess not.

It's optional DLC. Period. It's not necessary for the game. And unless somebody can provide me some hard proof that it was cut from the main game, I'm not buying into that line of bullsh*t. I consider it typical internet conjured crap that net dwellers typically freak out about. Nothing more. People need to think, and get some hard evidence before crucifying Bioware. The leaked script isn't enough, in my opinion, to do that.

And before some under aged basement dweller or entitlement class ass clown decides to peg me as a "Biodrone" or EA apologist, I will let it be known that I'm not a big fan of Electronic Arts. And Mass Effect is the only Bioware game I really give two sh*ts about. So, skip it. I'm only voicing my opinion based on the available facts on the issue. I've been an electronic gamer since the days of coin arcades in the late '70's and early '80's. I've seen some truly crappy things come out of the gaming industry over the years, and this deal with the Promethean DLC isn't one of them from what I can see. All of this hoopla isn't necessary at this point.

If somebody doesn't like it, don't buy the damned game or DLC. Somebody else, who isn't a drama queen over nothing other than some ****** poor supposition, will buy it.

As for the Mass Effect development team, I want to say that I do appreciate the work you've put into the Mass Effect franchise over the years. Even if I didn't agree with everything incorporated into the games, you guys have done a fairly good job at keeping me entertained in front of my console. But I highly doubt you will ever read this statement of thanks, because it will require sorting through 143+ pages of sh*tstorm to see it.

Stay classy, BSN.

Finally. So many drama queens in this thread, thought i'd never see someone mature.
I'm getting the DLC, maybe not the first day. But maybe a week after.
The playerbase always cries for childish stuff. Even if this DLC would be released later on, they would still cry.
Whatever really, don't like it ? Don't buy it.

Jesus christ I've never felt such a crisis of consious over a damn video game.

There was a time when the only thing I had to worry about was blowing on the damn cartridge Now I'm wondering if everything is even in the cartridge.

Sometimes I wish I grew up playing sports or something less harmful.
I think the tumor hit around the time I heard the Catwoman part of Arkham City would only be available if you buy the game new.

As I already pointed out the game contains files that can't be used without the DLC. That makes the game incomplete. Bioware can spin it anyway they like, but thats a fact.

Or you could spin it your way, and that's a fact.

I'm sorry but I don't think Bioware is ever going to be able to placate everyone.

I know there are plenty of people on this forum who are radical Bioware (or EA) supporters and they do not quite understand what the fuss it.

Enough people are upset that Mass Effect 3 requires Origin that people have been venomous about it. So there are already some open sores people are attempting to lick. But this day-one DLC is salt in the wound. There’s clearly an uproar about it, and so far most places with this topic is clearly appears there’s more ticked off people than defenders.

It just feels like we’re being cheated. As if we’re the abused wife here. We’re trying to be dedicated, we’re attempting to stick it out, but now we’re getting uneasy with this. EA and (lately) Bioware have shown very little love or support for the community, so, yeah: this day-one DLC kinda hurts.

This squad mate may not be integral to the story, but I’m putting money that it’ll office some background / closure to any Mass Effect fan.

Kinda feels EA is using Mass Effect’s popularity and loyalty from its fans as a catalyst to gouge our wallets. What upsets me more, is that people are defending this practice. This is unethical and should not be okay.

If this squad mate was provides two months down the road? Well I doubt there’d be this much of an uproar.

That makes the assumption that it could have been finished before the games content needed to be frozen for certification and then manufacturing. Games take time and they take money to make. Some content can not be finished in time. The official statement is this content was finished after the main game was completed. If the content was released with the game it would have increased the games budget, by delaying the game, or something else would have been cut from the game to make up time. Game development is a business. Everything needs to be justified cost wise. Just because something would be nice to include in a game doesn't mean it makes sense to actually include it.

Also as others have said, ME2 contained unfinished DLC data. Does that mean ME2 was unfinished to?

If the day 1 DLC is not integral to the storyline and was not worked on during the development of ME3 then it's going to be poorly tested and rushed out before release, but if it's so irrelevant to the storyline why not wait a month or two then release it fully tested and polished as DLC.

How does releasing Day 1 DLC benefit the community in any way?

At best you get rushed DLC content and at worst you get less base content. The only winners here? EA/Bioware, the losers? The entire community, I dont think I will ever understand why you all not only put up with it, but actively encourage it.

A lot of the groundwork was already there.  The actual levels, character, alt. outfits, and additional programming had to be implemented, but all of the core mechanics are the same as the main game.

So no, it isn't poorly tested.  Might be rushed depending on what began when in the overall development cycle, but it will be fine technically wise (that last is my opinion, as there's no way to know).

You're argument is flawed. The game is complete without the prothy. This would be like Nintendo charging ten dollars for you to play as Luigi. Sure it would ****** a lot of ppl off who claim, "Luigi is important to Mario Bros lore!" but he's not essential to the single player experience.

That's wrong.

The game contains files that can't be used until the DLC is added. That makes it incomplete. If those files never existed then Bioware might be more credible on this.

And my counter is three things.

1, do you know how hard it is to code an entire mission and character as an add-on to a main game?

2, If the files can't be used until the DLC is added, but if the DLC was planned to begin with, is it really incomplete?

3, Does it really matter so much that DLC has been made like this, since Bioware has done it so many times already to begin with, and people still bought the extra characters despite complaints to/ the contrary?

1 Do I care...
2. Sure sounds like the definition of incomplete to me.
3. If there are files on in the game that can only be used with the DLC then the game is incomplete without it. Bioware is in the wrong here and should recant. In future games then can make sure to leave no such files then we won't be able to call them to task on it.

Not really certain how this spins legally but I'll ask some friends on the weekend.

.

Well, you should for one, especially if you say its in the coding already.

Adding or removing content in a major game now a days takes a lot of programming and modeling into the engine, as well as damage control and Q A testing to make sure the game is not broken or buggy upon launch. Skyrim is a good example of this, one mishap in the coding for one quest can make the dragons fly backwards. It's funny to think of it that way but its really true, you need to be a good coder to get the basics down first.

Now, any game has remnants of coding that is locked out to the player. Hot coffee for GTA: San Andreas is an example of this, something removed from the game but is still in the coding and only acessible via emulation of cheat devices. Hacking it basically to see whats there. Games have been doing that since the late 1990's, cutting and adding content they felt would not fit.  Games with DLC do the same thing, they put the basic markers for the DLC into the main game where it would fit and stuff, sometimes its a placeholder until something new comes out, sometimes its a part of the final DLC.

The DLC though is usually extra code thats added via a download, standalone stuff that is an expansion because you cannot play it on it's own, you need the main game to do so, it then synchs up with marks in the coding so that there are fewer chances for bugs in the overall product and the DLC totally screwing up the game. Never perfect, but its a precautionary method to minimize the risk of something breaking.

Voice over stuff usually is recorded for games before the animation and components are finished. Its so they can match lip synching, no reason to do ADR and things like that, etc. So usually sound files for voices are always on a disk because its, well, easier and cheaper to do it that way. My guess, is that if the sound files are the only evidence of the character being in the game, its likely that the files were left there to match up with content they were planning to do.

Note I said planning, because you say its incomplete, but again, do you know, or does anyone on here know, if this was planned to be a part of the main game to begin with? They say no, we say yes, we have seen scripts, you have the coding of the voice over, in the end who knows. My point is that everything seems to point to the fact that this was a pre-planned DLC for a while now. We see it in games files because they were anticipating it being there, and there is no way of telling if it was fully cut content unless if a graphic designer or a coder looks through the files to determine it.
