Dealer:  Good afternoon, sir!  Welcome to Bioware Motors.

Patron1:  Yeah, thanks.  Whatchagot?

Dealer:  Our latest model, sir - the ME3 Turbo SE.  Just delivered from the factory a week ago.

Patron1:  Oh, yeah?  What's it got?  Looks sporty.

Dealer:     For only 60, you get all the standard equipment, plus AC,  a 3-CD player, faux leather interior,  computer-controlled braking system, an onboard GPS and a computer-assisted gasoline monitor that helps you save money.  It can use all three gasoline types with equal efficiency.  It comes with bucket seats,  and can be equipped as a standard or automatic, and is backed by our warranty assuring future upgrades, for a small fee.

Patron1:  That's pretty sweet.  Not bad.  I do believe I'll take it.

Dealer:  Thank you, sir, I...

Patron2:  Hey there, Patron1!  I see you're just about to buy the ME3 Turbo SE.

Patron1:  Yup.  It's pretty nice.  Sporty.  I bought the 2007 model and the 2009 one.  I like this series.

Patron2:  I agree,  I did too,  that's why I went for the Me3 HyperLX this time.  It's got everything yours has, except it has real leather heated seats, 12 CD -Changer in the upholstered trunk, full surround sound and full ABS.  It can also use diesel and cooking grease to power it, with the option to upgrade to full hydrocell in the future!  It also has a skid control built in and full power steering.  It also comes in Hyperblack, which only the LX has.  A bit steep, over 90 to get it, but I think it was worth it.  Had it all installed today, too.  Sweet, huh?

Patron1:  WTF!?  Hey, dealer, you piece of crap - how come he gets extras? Huh? You lying scum - what the hell are you trying to pull?!?

Dealer:  I don't understand the problem, sir?

Patron1:  Look, technically they're the same car, aren't they?  Same chassis, same engine, same wheels?

Dealer:  With minor differences, technically, yes.

Patron1:  That's what I thought!  But he gets all the extras?

Dealer:  Well, it is the luxury edition, sir.  However, for 10 more we can include...

Patron1:  Oh, no, you don't, you damned con artist!  If these two cars were technically identical when they were designed, then I want all those extras for free!  I bought the last two cars in this series!  I'm entitled!

Dealer:  Uh... sorry...?

Patron2:  How do you figure that you're entitled to a luxury edition when you were ready to buy the standard?  That makes no sense.  It never included the extras because it's the standard edition.

Patron1: Look, ******!  They're the same car!  At some point, a designer made the decision that all those extras could be installed onto the same body and the only real difference is the name!  I deserve those extras because I bought the same car! The same, the same, the same! Just because they're pandering to you rich basturds doesn't mean I shouldn't have it too! FFS!  And you should kiss my a ss and offer me something just for me for the privilege of me buying one of your cars in the first place!  And kiss my a ss!

Dealer:  Uh... you bought the standard edition.  We can install those extras are only 10 more...

Patron1:  I don't care if they're five or one or a hundred more!  I deserve them free because I bought the same car he did technically! Free because I bought two cars here before!  That proves I deserve it!  I say I do so I do!

Patron2:  I don't think so.  Listen to yourself.

Patron1:  Aha! You just screwing me then? Rip off!  Gyp!  Thievery!  Injustice!  Unfettered greedy capitalism! It so figures!  That all you do to the beaten down guy who can barely afford a big screen tv and two consoles and a computer!  And you said it was afternoon, when technically it's not noon yet!  Conspiracy!  Lies everywhere!  I'm cancelling my car payment and going to the Bethesda Auto because even if their cars tend to stall they're nicer than you... and another thing... boobs in Witcher motors - superior!.....

Dealer:  Wow.

Patron2:  Lack of thorazine in his diet, from the looks of it...

The Best way to put it....

Considering the VO work had to be done during the actual deveopment time, yes.

It's not uncommon for that to happen.  It also saves space on the downloaded file.

Then why did they tell us that they didn't use development time on creating the DLC?

I mean, that makes it look like they're lying to us.

This. They had my money, there was never any doubt about me buying the game. But as it is now, for every piece of information released/leaked that reassures me about ME3 being the game I hoped for there are at least two things that make me seriously doubt I'll be happy with it, and that's just not that good a ratio.

"Don't buy it" really is the very last option for me. Posted Image

There are voice files for Prothy in the demo for the Sur'Kesh mission. Other squaddies have simliar voice files. The previous demo leak contained scripts of his scenes, but nothing about his recruitment or personal mission (assuming he has one). I honestly don't see why people refuse to take Bioware at their word on this. The last four DLC companions have all been interesting (except for Sebastian) and integrated well into the main game without making the game feel incomplete without them.

Well, the thing is, Casey Hudson said that working on the DLC didn't detract from working on the game proper, because they weren't working on the DLC until the game was finished.

And other Bioware employees have said that the Prothean was never "cut" from the game.

But if the Prothean was never intended to be in the full game....and they weren't working on the DLC at the same time as the full game....why are his voice files in the demo?

That doesn't seem possible.

I think part of the problem is understanding what "finished" means to a developer. As I understand it, and I'm not in the industry so I could be wrong, they finished the storyboard; you know, who goes where, does what and when. The basic outline of the story... then while the rest of the team went forward with that, the writers said to themselves, "Hey, I've got this great idea... how can we implement this guy into what we've already made?"

Again, just my admittedly oversimplified assumption...

They should have been saying "hey, how can we make what we have made better"

And I would consider the addition of this character to be making it better...

That's a really tough thing to say considering you haven't played the game yet. It assumes there are no bugs or defects in the base game, pre-release you don't make things better by adding to them, you make things better by improving them. Post release, you improve by adding.

No, the amount of money is the issue. What if it was 1 c? 2? 10? 25c? You'd have your limit. What if they charged you only what the hosting costs for you to download the file were? Would you have an issue the. How about trying to recover some development costs? That ok? Where is your limit...

If it was 1 cent I would be on here complaining that they shouldn't be charging for content that should ship with the game.  Microsoft hosts the content on their servers, access to which I already pay Microsoft for.

And they recover development costs by charging $60 a pop for the game.  Nobody is complaining about that cost.  That's industry standard.  It's also industry standard that $60 buys you a complete game, not a core that's been parted out so the parts can be sold to you for additional money.

I am a CE pre-orderer, but I have to agree with many in this thread that this is a rather sleazy way of making more money from ME3. Pretty much any other new squad member being exclusive to DLC would have been preferable to this Prothean DLC. Unfortunately, I expect nothing less of major game developers in 2012 as DLC has nearly stripped what little dignity the video game industry had away.

I own my apartment. All my bills are paid in full and on time. I own precious metals, among other retirement investments, stocks, and savings.

Sit where you are and keep thinking you're better than me. You're not. You're complaining about an issue I won't hesitate to put down $10 on. I make $10 in 20 minutes. I make $10 in the duration of an average phone call.

Releasing DLC on Xbox Live is very much not free for the publisher of that DLC. Vavle threw up a huge stink over this and 360 players didn't get free content while PS3 and PC users did.

That is not why the entitled is being thrown around.  The entitlement comes from the fact that this was CE content made available to rest.  But instead of being grateful, now people like you want it free because you feel you shouldn't have to pay like the CE owners had to, as well as being under the incorrect assumption that this was content completely cut from the main game to make a quick buck.

It's a much more apt description on here than the contstant "haters" and "biodrones" that keeps getting used.

Would this by chance be implying that the Prothean will be in the game without the DLC, but simply not as a joinable character?

You know, we know very little about what is going to happen in Mass Effect 3. For all we know, a Prothean survivor could show up in the main game too, just not as a squadmate. Wouldn't that make all of the "integral part of the story" arguments completely invalid?

Yep, but that would give rise to "why did EA/Bioware bother trying to leverage everyone over the DLC if it wasn't really important."

I'm not sure that's much better for their reputation.

Or worse. We'll have to play the game and see, but I'm an optimistic person, I think it'll make the game better.

I've read all 96 pages of this thread. Contrary to popular thoughts, we really do care what you guys have to say.

Casey and I have explained how the development timeline on these DLC go, and in order to have our DLC flow with the main game, we do have to integrate the VO into certain places in the core product (Certain ME2 DLCs followed this same pattern). But there's a lot of work to crafting a great DLC, outside of the VO and script.

That said, i can tell you is that a team of of us poured our heart into this DLC after we had given all we could to finish the the ME3 game. We pushed hard because we wanted people to be able to experience this adventure on the first day, rather than day 30 or 60. We're proud of it, and if you choose to play it, I think you'll see that.

I really do appreciate every person who wants to give ME3 a chance (even if you're not happy with me right now!), and even without 'From Ashes' - I think you will be blown away.

Thanks for your support, and thanks for your feedback.

Mike

And I believe you Mike.  What boggles my mind is that both you, Casey, and even Stanley have explained the process of how Day-1 DLC works, and yet people continue to believe that what you're saying is an utter lie and that you're money-grubbing jerks.

It's aggravating that you're being sincere about this, and people just wave you off or roll their eyes and go "Nice try."

I don't think there's ever going to be a way to convince some people, no matter how forthwright you are.  But hey, at least you're willing to try.

OK I understand where you are coming from here, and yes I agree at the potential magnitude of it.  However, there is nothing to indicate that it is actually going to add any of that, at all.  This one prothean is not going to have happened to be put into stasis while holding the kill all reapers code.  Most likley this isn't going to be Captain America it is going to be Phillip J Fry.   Other then a few off hand comments all you are getting is another hired gun.

Yes logically it should add a lot to the story, however there is nothign to prove that it will. Nor is there any proof that not having the DLC will take away any of the story, with what we all have as proof right now, he/she is found one way or another all we are missing out on is having them tag along on other missions.

Mmmm.. Ok. I now just hope that it won't add a whole bunch of story and options to the game (as harsh as that sounds).
I can see both sides of the argument/discussion, but I still feel something like this should of been treated the way Shale was treated in DA:O, free to anyone who bought an original/new copy from a shop/store and that the Collector's Edition only included cosmetic items and not an item which gives such an illusion, (or something along this discussion happens).

Ah well, I am sure everyone has learnt something from this.. Somewhere.. Hopefully.. =]

edit: It's just the game went gold not long ago, and I feel that as this was announced a year or so ago that a Prothean Squaddie was going to appear somewhere, that it really could of been added to the original game and not been sold for even more money..

From what I get, the reason that this isn't a shale is because there is already a code in there for the online pass and this was not bundeled to it.   As for when the charecter was announced, I am not sure but I don't think it was that long ago.  I still have my printout of when I ordered the CE and a exclusive charecter was not on the list.
