Copy of the Email I just sent to contact@bioware.com

Dear Bioware.

You seem to know who I am, you've sent me enough email over the years. I am one of your long time customers, I've bought Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 and the expansions, Neverwinter Nights and the content packs for it, Dragon Age and the DLC's for it, Mass Effect one and two and the DLC's, and many other games you've developed.

As someone with a disability I am on a tight budget, if I intend to purchase new games when they first come out then I have to specifically set aside money to pay for them, they are expensive items in my budget, I had set aside the money to pay for Mass Effect 3 and I had pre-orrded the game via Amazon, in the past I have purchased Collectors Editions of games, as a writer and artist I enjoyed looking at the Art Books that came with those games and the other physical items that where included, the cosmetic content that was unlockable in the game was a bonus but not really my reason for purchasing collectors editions.

Today it came to light that you are planning to release a downloadable content pack on the day of release of Mass Effect 3, the same pack is apparently included as part of the Collectors Edition, and is seeming much more than simply the cosmetic extras that are normal practise in a Collectors Edition, and that you intend to charge extra for this already produced content that you included in the Collectors Edition.

In response to our concerns you have made this statement in your forum.

"As most of you know, yesterday there was a leak that revealed the upcoming DLC “ME3:From Ashes” on the
Xbox LIVE Marketplace. This leak took place before we were prepared to make an announcement about the details of that pack (slated for this Friday).

There has been a lot of discussion about the DLC offering but we wanted to clarify a few things...

- “From Ashes” includes the Prothean squad mate, an adventure on Eden Prime, a new weapon, and an alternate
appearance for every squad mate. Note that these alternate appearances are in addition to the ones already advertised in the CE.

- The Collectors Edition has been advertised from the beginning as containing a bonus character/mission, but we were not at liberty to provide the details. The Prothean is optional content that is certainly designed to appeal to long-time fans, which is why he is part of the CE offering (the version many fans would be likely to purchase). Mass Effect 3 is a complete – and a huge game - right out of the box.

- The content in “From Ashes” was developed by a separate team (after the core game was finished) and not completed until well after the main game went into certification.

- The Collectors Edition has been sold out in most places for some time now, and is becoming very hard to find (many players prefer not to purchase the digital version). As such, we wanted to make this content available so that SE buyers could also incorporate the Prothean into their game.

We’ll be releasing someimages and video about this pack in the coming days.

As always, we are extremely thankful for all of your support. We pulled out all of the stops to make Mass Effect 3 the best game ever, and we can't wait for you all to experience it.

Mike"

In effect you are telling us that this was late game development and developed separately, in order to justify charging money for it on the day of release. This is contradicted by the fact that this was known about almost a year ago. This can be demonstrated by this post from that time .. http://social.biowar...3/index/7551111

"In the N7 Collector's Edition "Features" caption there's this:

Get the ultimate Mass Effect 3 experience with the N7 Collector's Edition! This exclusive and limited package includes:

• Dark Horse ME Series 3 issue 1, with alternate cover art

A full collection of in-game content that can’t be found anywhere else!

• N7 arsenal pack – N7 Sniper Rifle, Shotgun, Pistol and SMG
• Squad-mate alternate appearance pack
• Normandy mechdog companion
• Shepard casual appearance– N7 hoodie
• Exclusive extended soundtrack
• Exclusive 4x6 lithograph
• Day 1 DLC – the Prothean (Adventure/Character)

So.....
Reactions? Thoughts?"

and the reply from you ..

Sorry, that was a mistake from old text. It is being removed. Hate to be a killjoy.

Oh wait... no I don't. smilie

So , this was obviously not late game content that was developed separately when you had some time to spare after the Game had gone gold, this was something you had planned to be released on day one and charge extra for, with lore and storyline relevant content that your most loyal customers, who had played the previous two games, would most want, and planned for some considerable time in what seems to be a very cynical corporate decision to get extra money from your most loyal customers for something that should and could have been included in the game itself or offered as a code to those who bought the new version of the game instead of buying second hand.

I dislike companies that cynically try and milk extra cash from the cows (Before you joined up with EA I think we used to be referred to as the community, now we seem to be cows with $ signs painted on the sides), for things that could easily have been included as part of the, already very expensive, game, and I *reallly* dislike companies that blatantly lie to their customers or trick their own employees into making false statements by withholding information from them.

On reflection, despite my desire to see the conclusion of this saga, I have regrettably cancelled my order and will almost certainly no longer buy any future products from your company, entangled as you have become with the cynical Corporate practices of Electronic Arts, something you and they explicitly promised would not happen, when the merger happened we as a community where told that EA would treat Bioware differently, this has obviously not been the case.

If you are wondering if there is anything that can be done to retain my business, I would consider purchasing the game if you release the DLC freely, as something that should have been in the game already, this is the only way you can regain my custom and go slightly towards regaining my trust in you as a company separate from EA.

Yours Regretfully.

A customer since the beginning of your Company.

Wow, powerful email man, good on you./

My wife and I have cancelled not only our ME3 pre-orders (including one CE) but also our SWTOR subscriptions (though to be fair that's probably long overdue). It sounds so cliche when I actually say it but it's just sad that a company whose games have been a day one purchase for me for over a decade (including Black Isle stuff) has over the last couple of years taken the ****** out of me to this degree.

People are talking about re-ordering should this debacle be rescinded but in my case that won't be good enough. The fact that the people behind this mess thought that it was acceptable in the first place has put the final nail into the coffin for me. I won't be giving the company another penny unless I see a dramatic and sustained turn around in their business model.

2011,
They killed it with Dragon Age 2, dunno what the hell happened with the old brilliant David Gaider, he went mad and bioware went down the hill.
I don't want to believe its the same man who wrote Baldurs, NWN , Kotor and DA:origins. Its a nightmare, but its real.

I think the decent start in 2011 when they rushed DA2, They've been slowly losing any of the soul they had has a company over the past few years. If bioware was a TV show DA2 would be their jumping the shark moment I think. They just won't be the same after that moment and its being reinforced more and more.

In a few years we pay an extra 40 euro on top of the actual 60 euro game to have access to all incoming dlc. It will be: the Mega Digital Deluxe edition.

Are you kidding? You ALREADY have to pay $800+ to get all the DLC and extras at LAUNCH for mass effect 3.

No... if you get the digital deluxe version you pretty much got everything (if your origin provides all preorder items and you bothered with the KoA demo). All those weapon things are multiplayer booster packs you can just grind yourself.

That pretty much sums it up. The sheer amount of butthurt displayed here is staggering. I'm actually surprised people are able to feel so strongly about their $10 and a business model. SO STRONGLY. STFUs and GTFOs are being thrown around and for what? Because you think BW is trying to make some money off of you? Yeah they are. All companies do that. Shocker. You don't have to get it. And a lot of the people complaining already have the damn thing! WTF! Why are you complaining that it costs $10 if you already have a CE? "Because I'm trying to help those who don't!!!!!!" Well stop, those people can complain on their own.

As someone who owns almost every Bioware title (yes, even MDK), my purchase of ME3 was virtually assured, but this is just unforgivable. You don't withhold crucial content on a game that's already $60 on the PC, and then charge $10 for it on day 0.

To all the people saying, "no one is making you buy this" -- you're completely right. I've cancelled my preorder and I don't intend on ever buying the game unless something changes.

Yes they should Games are not a necessity they area  luxury good. They should be grateful that anyone bothers to make games for them to play at all. If they dont want to spend their money on a game that is their choice as consumers it does not entitle them to everything they want simply because they have money and spend it on something.

Are you for real?, an awful lot of people would be out of a job if we did not pay for their product, it's not a neccesity for us, but it damn well is for them if they want to bring home the bread and butter.

I think some people are missing the point that certification takes a very long time. You can not make any changes to the game during certification. However if you want you to be doing something during certification you can make DLC.

So what happens is this
1) Content is designed for main game
2) Decided that some content can not be finished and still keep release date
3) Least important/most separable content is decided not to be finished for inclusion on the disc
4) The removed content is finished during the main products certification/manufacturing
5) Its released Day 1 as DLC

So it was in the game originally, but was not finished as it makes more business sense not too finish it before gold if then can finish it after gold.

Of course it could have been in the game but would have just delayed the game further. Sure the fans wouldn't have cared, but the people in charge of financials do. The game is already late.

Thats fine! But don't bloody sell it! Make it free for all paying customers. You know, like a good company.

But it still cost them time and money to work on the DLC.  They should just give it away?

There are no holes in our logic, we just want something as monumental as a live Prothean to be a part of every owner's game. It's ridiculous that EA thought this was a good idea.

wrong. it was in the game but they cut it out, put it in the CE to entice people like you to pay them $20 more, or to make people who want to have the COMPLETE experiece shell out $10 more on top of the $60.

with that, they lose nothing and we lose something. is that so hard to understand. either way, Bioware gets to charge you more.

Please, you have no more proof of that then those claiming it was delayed content/held back for later. You are reaching, and in reaching you are eroding any semblance of a good point you're making.

Just because some info about him was in the spoiled plot doesn't mean he was created and finished for months. We saw this with ME2 where LotSB and Kasumi had preliminary VA/lines in the game code but it was pulled till they could finish it later.

Case in point - you have 0 means of backing up that claim just as much as I have 0 means of backing up that he was legitimately finished after the game hit certification. Please try again :)

his audio files were stripped as far back as June last year, his character and mission was announced November last year.

so you're telling me they just finished him after they went gold? and suddenly he's available on release date for $10? rrriiiight. keep telling yourself that.

people are not stupid. to work out a character, his mission, his dialogue for different circumstances and different missions, and only completing it after the game has gone gold and offering it as day 1 DLC for $10? does that make sense to you at all? you're in denial as much as your head is far up Bioware's arse.

My case and point.  Zero contribution.

dunno if srs? I have posted how Bioware has lied about the DLC being developed well after the game went gold when it was announced months ago that a  Prothean charecter would be part of the collectors edition but that post was soon deleted.

My point is, you're primary action was to insult and contribute nothing constructive, unlike most of these "fanboys".  You also may find that I was speaking of this specific post.

And while, yes, the piece had started development before-hand, it wasn't given the same attention in development as the main game until after the certification process began.  BioWare and EA had it planned that he was to be DLC long ago, but that majority of the work wasn't done until probably the past month or two.

But again, that contributed nothing to progress or discussion.

it's simply put this way.

if a game is not released, it is not finish. if there is a content for the game BEFORE release, it should be in the game when its released. with no extra charge.

the age of Downloading content into your game to have an extra hours or so is being BLUNTLY abused at this point.

Forum are a place were we talk about the game and get info and Dev can give out info and try and keep us in the loop with new and bits. This forum is a part of Biowere that they offer to you for free and this is how you treat them you all make me sick, You all are lucky that they do not pull the plug and shut down the froum as I would of a long time ago.

If you do not like it that you have to pay for DLC then don't buy it, A true fan will pay for it, Some years ago I payed $10 for a $1 coin with star trek on it. Why as i'm a fan if this DLC was $20(£15) I would still buy it Why same as before I'm a fan.

Yes we get it, you are a fanboy but its no excuse for Bioware to lie about the DLC being put into production well after the game was certified. Does Bioware really think we're that stupid?

53 pages of largely the same people repeating their same arguments over and over. Try not to overstate things in your zeal to pain those in support of this as villains or that Bioware is a devil stealing your lunch money.

I evaluated the money I would spend to get the full experience + whatever add-ons they offered. It was a conscience choice. I still think it would be cool to have it included with each game purchase, no matter of version. But since it IS a non-main plot critical DLC, having it as 10 dollar Day 1 DLC falls into the usual modus operandi of most companies in this day and age.

Holy crap, I'm not blinded by their words! I made a choice all on my own! *puts on big boy pants* Honestly, I appreciate both sides of the arguments as there are people opposed to this making great points, but when you make posts like that? You're not one of them. Accept that there are plenty of people who have very little issue with this just as you and others don't like it and cut out the childish insults.
