I'm officially putting my name on the boycott list, with regrets.I, for one, agree with Merix. I have very much enjoyed Bioware's games over the last few years, but EA's marketing strategies I feel are incredibly underhanded and disrespectful to the fan community. To any moderators or employees actually reading these posts I urge you not to ignore them. I would like to succinctly state the issues I have with this business model which have lead to my current cancelling of my planned Mass Effect 3 purchase:
Origin: I believe that competition is a good thing and that, implemented properly, Origin and Steam should be worthwhile competitors for a common market. However, EA has failed to implement their proprietary service in any profound way. As it stands now, Origin seems as though it is being strong-armed in by EA by withholding titles from Steam users and I (along with many others) feel this is unacceptable. Rather than using this tactic please consider ideas like initiatives for new members (free DLC, one discounted purchase, etc.) or something to build good relations with your consumer rather than insulting them by saying you respect their choices while forcing them to use Origin if they wish to play games.
Secondly, day one "DLC:" If software pertaining to the main experience of a title is developed along side and is ready for release at the same time as the title itself then I do not consider it an add-on. I feel it is yet another underhanded tactic to nickel and dime your customer to get the full experience from their purchase. This is not good business; it communicates to me that you do not respect my intelligence or my patronage. Please consider at the very least making this content available free of charge to early adopters of the title.
I would very much like to play Mass Effect 3 and am extremely interested in giving you my business but, as a company you need to be willing to meet your market half way. Give this game a release to fans playing on Steam and I may consider myself more inclined to purchase downloadable content. Respect my choice as a consumer to do what I want with the money I work hard to earn and I guarantee you will see more of it spent on products that carry the EA/Bioware label. A reply to these concerns would be appreciated but action would be appreciated more.
Sincerely,
A Disappointed Fan
I agree 100% with this. Well written and I too will be posting a letter to express how I feel on the subject of this game. I decided to listen and write in the forums, when I haven't before, for this game. I did that because I am a huge fan. It's unfortunate that BioWare, a company that I feel produces games that are better then gold, was the straw for me having to boycot a videogame. There are other videogame companies that have been producing lesser quality games and couple it with bad business practices, but I for one am more shocked that BioWare decided to go along this more corperate route to get money instead of letting the game make the money for them.
