Hi, :)

I've been playing a rogue and haven't gotten very far. I'm only about level 6 and I'm in Lothering and even the bandits are slaughtering me without much effort. I'm playing on Normal difficulty.

My current party consist of Leilani, Morrigan, Allistair, and me (my rogue).

It seems to me that in order to even have the least chance of survival, I have to micro-manage every little detail of every battle. This means I spend the vast majority of my time paused, which I personally don't find to be all that much fun. And even with that, I am still pretty much getting spanked and my characters are dying quite often.

I feel like I must be missing something - some basic and obvious strategy. Either that or this game is incredibly difficult, even on Normal difficulty.

I always try to position my rogue behind the enemy, but the damage bonus I get from this really doesn't seem all that signifigant. I try to use bows to weaken the enemy at a distance, then switch to melee when they get close. Morrigan's spells are a pain to micro-manage, but I am trying my best to utilize them. I focus on one enemy at a time, figuring it's better to kill one than wound many. Yet, I am still getting spanked on a regular basis and I am using healing potions and injury kits like they are going out of style.

In Lothering, the bandit groups outnumber me at least 2 to 1 and they basically just swarm over me and the battle isn't even close. I usually lose a member of my party in the first 10 seconds and it's all downhill from there.

Anyone got any advice for me about what I might be doing wrong?

I can only guess, of course, but you're probably not pulling mobs. If you're having trouble, try pulling mobs one by one using a bow. Have your tank shoot a mob from max distance. He'll aggro and the others won't (to my knowledge mobs aren't linked anywhere in DAO). Pick off a few this way before charging in.

Beyond this, make sure your tank taunts and has shield wall up. Without a healer, you may need to pot occasionally. NOBODY but your tank should be hit, ever, unless by AOE.

Also, you might want to set up tactics for your party members if you don't want to micromanage them. On normal, I'm finding that I can leave most of them to their devices for most battles. Of course, for the more challenging fights or larger pulls, micro-management is the way to go.

You know, it's funny that you should mention your playing a rogue and are in Lothering. I'm currently doing the same, and happen to be in Lothering.

My suggestion would be to stealth your rogue, tell your party to hold, have Alistair aggro two of the bandits and then lure them back to where your party is holding. Use your stealthed rogue to crit and backstab, make sure Ali taunts and keep the aggro on him.

If the bandits run back to their original positions, use your bow and take them out one by one.

This method worked for me on Nightmare.

I had to pull those scoundrels away from each other and take them on 2, 3 or 4 at a time. It made it a lot easier at that level range while in Lothering.

Can Morrigan cast Flaming or Frost Weapons? It's very helpful in causing extra damage. All party members will receive this while activated.

I find the amount of micro I have to do in this one of main draw points. Then again I used to lead WoW raids and ladder in WC3. What can I say? I like herding cats.
