I don't agree with that at all. Many of the old squadmates have awesome roles in critical missions. Most of them are a part of mulltiple missions as well. They are absolutely not cameos.

I see I should have defined my use of the term "cameo".

From my point of view, a "cameo" is when  the former squadmate is not an actual squadmate.
Case in point, the mission to rescue the Krogan female.
Wrex is piloting the shuttle, Mordin is overseeing the transfer.

But neither of them are "on the team" as it were.

So no matter how much of a crucial role they play, unless they're actually in the squad, I call it "cameo".

There's also what I term as "Squad cameo", which means they're temporarily part of the Squad (like Shadow Broker), accessible for one mission, but not freely usuable whenever you want.

Same here!

I'm going to be spending all of ME3 going "I miss my Krogan!"

As far as I can interpret the basic info, anyone who's not an existing squadmate has been reduced to the glorious rank of "cameo NPC".

A shame, I got the Chakram Launcher and wanted to give it to a Krogan just for the boomdeathlolz.
Big and deadly squadmates deserve a big and deadly assault rifle!

I hope you're right.  There are some games that I could mention where a once-important character disappears or gets turned into a sidequest cameo in the sequel.

Then that explanation is needed, since that's not really what the word cameo actually means. A cameo is just a short walk-on. Those doing a cameo often don't even have dialogue. So you can understand why I want to clarify for other people that these characters all have roles in the story, and plenty of dialogue.

So let's see... If this is in fact the final list (some people in the thread have said it's confirmed that that's it; I have never see the spoilers list from the leak demo, so I wouldn't know if that's true or not), let's look at class possibilities...

1(2) Biotics -- Liara (Kaiden)
2 (3) Soldiers -- Vega, Garrus (Ashley)
2 Tech -- Tali, EDI

Then the DLC guy, but he shouldn't count for balancing.

While this kind of list would be very, very disappointing while in comparison with ME2, it's really not all that different from ME1.

3 Biotics -- Liara, Wrex, Kaiden
2 Soldiers -- Ashley, Garrus
1 Tech -- Tali

However, since Tali and Garrus may not make it, that could potentially leave a player with only four squadmates. And that seems... small, to say the least. Plus, it worries me that Liara will have plenty of plot armor, since she could theoretically be your only biotic, much like how you couldn't get rid of Tali because she was your only true tech in ME1. I don't want another Anders situation where you potentially have to alter your in-game decision on account of gameplay. (Killing Anders in DA2 could get rid of your only medic before, you know, the game's final battle. Not smart.)

I'm hoping to all that's holy that there are one or two more squadmates, or at the very least that we have occasionaly temporary squadmates from old times.

Also, Kasumi had better damn well play a role. I heart her.

Kasumi is involved with Udina on the Citadel, along with Thane.

Also don;t forget the Prothean Squadmate. Still I think one is missing

I could have sworn people where saying on here (after Vega was announced) there where two spoiler squadmates and the DLC squadmate. I thought the two spoilers where EDI and the Prothean but if he's the DLC then that would leave another space. Unless that's all changed recently

NO, the secret squadmates are EDI and Prothean (DLC that should have been in the game). There is no third squadmate at this time and date, maybe after Mass Effect 3 comes out and after a year , we can  hope for a new squadmate.

You are counting too many squadmates. Most of my Sheps will have 3 (4 if you cound EDI).

I let Garrus and Tali die as I can't bear them in another game.

I am not complaining tho', Actually looking forward for 3 soldier team (Shep, Ash and Vega. He is pro human run).

Technically Garrus would be half-tech.

It's ok, one of each I suppose if you killed off everyone. I wonder if the VS will get a class overhaul as part of the plot though?

I think it's reasonable to assume they'll have a back-up squadmate to fill in for Garrus or Tali if you got them killed in ME2. Otherwise your ship will just feel empty.

Technically Garrus would be half-tech.

So's Kaiden, if he keeps his Sentinel class from ME1.

So it's really more like:

1 Biotic (Liara)
0/1 Biotic/Tech (Kaiden if Ashley died in ME1)
1/2 Soldiers (Vega, Ashley if Kaiden died in ME1)
0/1 Soldier/Tech (Garrus if he survived ME2)
1/2 Tech (EDI, Tali if she survived ME2)

So maximum balance:
1 Biotic, 0/1 Biotic/Tech, 1/2 Soldier, 1 Soldier/Tech, 2 Tech

Minimum balance:
1 Biotic, 0/1 Biotic/Tech, 1/2 Soldier, 1 Tech

...Plus whatever the hell the Prothean is, if you download him. And of course none of that counts the potential squadmate deaths during ME3. Suffice it to say that players who are worse-off in regards to squadmate deaths may well find themselves with slim pickings when it comes to squadmates. It seems like the game's equipped to make sure you at least have the barebones biotic/soldier/tech options with Liara, Vega, and EDI, at least.

Since our objective isn't to gather recruits for a squad-based op this time, I can definitely see why the squadmate pickings are slimmer this time around.

Yeah it seems like we will actually have about 10 other previous squadies that actually help in mission(s). It would be nice to have them a permanent squadies but this is okay too. I know bioware wouldn't just give them a cameo. I think this will actually be better instead of having 15 squadies to worry about. We will be more concerned with getting all the other races to kick some reaper butt!

Legion takes part in at least two missions. I am really looking forward to playing through both. They sound awesome.

Liara
Virmire Survivor
Garrus
Vega
Edi
Tali
and Bonus 'Blood Diamond" Prothean.

Here are links to hear EDI and Africano Prothy

Additions or corrections to the list would be appreciated.

I remember seeing a new squadmate named Diana in the VO trailer as well as a brand new trailer I saw during The Walking Dead last Sunday (very good trailer btw, I suggest youtubing it if you haven't seen it yet). Granted, The Elusive Man was in the VO trailer but the fact that the Diana chick was in the new shiney tv trailer looking an awful lot like she's taken Miranda's slot as the hotchick squadmate next to ManShep makes it look like she's a squadmate.

At the end of the day I am looking forward to Kaidan/Ashley since they were sorely absent from ME1 (especially if they were Li's) and Garrus, if I don't get my Garrus, scary things will happen. This is all I am at liberty to say about it at this time, lol. Image IPB

Diana Allers (played by Jessica Chobot) is not a squadmate. She is the embedded reporter on the Normandy.

The female character standing next to Shepard in the cinematic trailer was Ashley Williams.

I'am kinda guessing that most people now have a "perfect" save file from me2. I mean, let's be honest here, me 2 suicide mission was easy. Making wrong choice there is simply not being able to read descriptions on the characters. The only real confusing choice there was if Mordin counts has a tech expert (while tali and legion are the most obvious choice) or if Garrus is a good squad leader (considering he lost all of his team, trauma and all) or maybe Zaeed (blue sun experience ect), but hey, who would pick zaeed for a squad leader anyway ? Sending someone to escort the crew is also something logical to give to Mordin, considering he is a doctor, and they might have been infected or whatever. The biotic part is obvious as well. Really the only confusing part is to live a squad mate to hold the door or not, and even then it does not matter much. If you got anyone killed, it's mostly due to them not being loyal rather than anything else.

Yep. That is confirmed by people who have played the game as well. If you run around getting everyone killed, you can have a squad as small as three. Vega, EDI, & Liara.

Well to be honest, that'd have been bad to replace the squadmate with a back up anyways because what if the back up is better? Then you gotta go back and kill the squadmates you love just to use the new ones? LAME.
