Looking at the squadmate's powerset confuses me based on a gameplay perspective, why would they make the only support based class (Kaiden aka Sentinel) also the only character you can miss because of choice? I'm sure there are other people that likes to balance their team and use warp detonations besides. It just seems pointless to me when there are three confirmed Soldiers with more or less the same powers (Ashley / Anderson / Vega).
Honestly, there's a lot about ME3 squad that doesn't make sense gameplay wise. I know that they have large fan bases, but Garrus and Tali shouldn't have been permanent squaddies, especially since they're 2 out of 3 of the squadmates who have tech skills. As you mentioned, if Kaidan is dead you're down a "support/debuffer."
That said apparently, Vega is the new Wrex/Grunt in that he's primarily a tank while Ashley is suppose to be a stronger damager.

Makes me suspect even more that the Prothean has to be a biotic/soldier mix, because that is sorely lacking even if you have all your survivors in order. Also makes me wonder if a biotic/tech is going to be available, either as DLC or as some secret unknown character, for those that lost Kaiden. If you lost Ashley, no big deal, you've got Vega....if you lost Tali, no big deal, you've got EDI.....but there's no replacement for Garrus or Kaiden in terms of class-mixers. I truly expected that this game would offer six original crew members, one for each combo, like in the first game.
As is, sounds like I'm going to run with Liara and either Tali, Garrus, or EDI for most of the game, since I play a soldier class for my main. That way I'll have everything covered to some degree. Plus Liara was my characters LI so I'd prefer to keep her on the team as much as possible.
I'm not complaining, and not disappointed, so much as confused and curious to see how this works in-game.

I might have to play around with Gibbed save editor and kill off Ashley if there are no other Sentinel squadmates, no way in hell I'll do a playthrough without my perfect team. Infiltrator / Vanguard / Sentinel has been my classic setup since the first.
My main was a soldier mainly because when I started out I was frustrated by not being able to use all the guns. I figured if I were going to be putting tons of hours into this for my main save that would get really old over time. Later playthroughs I branched out a bit because in none of those later rounds did I do EVERYTHING in the game.

Especially Vega. So people who've played the first two need someone to do the "LAST TIME" on mass effect bit?
Grunt or Legion. <.>

Still hate this squad list. Whoever created the list obviously was drunk at the time...

except it's not for people who've played the first two... it's for those who didn't.

They should have made it optional for people who have played the first two =p

There's a problem with that. If they don't add any new squadmates than people are angry. Consider EDI and the Prothean. They're both old and new. Certainly EDI is old but not as a squadmate. In a way it makes it an easy transition to the squad, but people will be angry if she's too sexualized which is what's happening. Whether or not the claims are justified it at least makes it easier that we have an old friend transitioning into that squadmate role. The Prothean, Javik, is a bit different as we expected them to be extinct. Certainly we knew about them from the beginning and in a way as old as they are it makes much less sense for a Prothean to be in stasis (in any of the pods created by the Prothean race) for 50,000 years to then become a squadmate compared to Vega. I like the idea of Javik on the team as the Protheans were extremely skipped over in 2 (yes they're repurposed into Collectors but other than that we really don't get much insight into them as a race).
Now consider Vega. If we have only people we knew of before becoming squadmates it becomes perfectly reasonable to not have him. Yet at the same time, we might get a few small complaints we don't get to have anyone entirely new on the squad. After all, people will say that putting EDI and using a Prothean (whom are extinct by the way!!!!!!!!!!!!) is like ignoring the fanbase's needs. Certainly we all wanted people from the ME2 squad to come back, but that shouldn't have happened. I think Vega gets a bad rap not because he is a new person in the entirety of the trilogy that's on the squad. On the contrary, if it were an alien I think we'd be hearing something quite different. However, what bothers people most is that he's human that looks like Snooki's baby daddy. If the problem is purely aesthetic people need to grow up. If not I don't know what to say.

Rachni Soldier.
"Hey, why is everyone running screaming from my Squad?"
<Rachni Soldier squeaks and points at himself>
"Oh."
That would be a little complicated in terms of gameplay though, a Rachni doesn't have a verbal language understood by most species, they normally get an Asari to act as an intermediary.
So, unless Liara goes with you, you're not going to understand anything the Rachni have to say.
Mind you, Dragon Age has a Dog as a Squadmate, so maybe it can be done!
Well, my resentment of Vega is pretty much that he's not a Krogan.
If I had a Krogan and Vega, I wouldn't be all that bothered by him.
But since that's not the case......
Also, a minor aside is I don't need a "recap machine" for ME1 and ME2.
I was there, I don't need him to tell me the story again from his point of view!
So, when I do the rounds talking to the crew after every mission, I'll skip Vega just on general principle.

Vega wouldn't be a problem if it was more then Vega, Edi and Javik... unless BW has kept surprises for the game -remember when game companies didn't spoil 80% of the plot just to build up hype- The Squad fills small... even smaller since thier will be no replacements if you got Garrus and Tali killed
-I think a Female Turian Sentinel and Admiral Xen would be awesome replacments for those two XD-
For the EPIC conculsion of the Reaper arc... It seems BW isn't going all out like they did in ME2 which by all standards is the weakest link in the chain, with what overall happened
