Seriously. Just got the hornet. The gold weapon of the SMG's and it still sucks. I also have the predator X and tempest IX, with level 3 attachments and they STILL suck. Why bioware? Please make the SMG's better.

Aim for the head.
I have absolutely no problem with damage on my SMGs.
My engineers only carry either the Locust or the Hornet.

I don't much like the Hornet (I find it impossible to control if I try to put a scope on it, and the burst fire makes it less effective at suppression), but I find both the Tempest and the Locust to be very effective for putting a lot of rounds down range, and with a scope I can consistently score headshots with them. They're not quite up to par with the Avenger for long range combat, but their light weight means that they still make a good alternative for power-reliant characters.

They don't suck. You just don't know how to use them effectively. Slap on a scope and you won't have any trouble hitting enemies far away.

Maybe I'm just a decent shot, but whether its a sniper rifle, assault, or SMG, I really have no problem putting rounds in the enemy and bringing them down.

Yeah, they have noticeably more kick than an assault rifle, but you just have to control with the mouse, really not that hard.

I'm on xbox. And I'm not talking about recoil, I'm just saying they plain suck(Atleast for me and all my friends). I can't take down anybody with an SMG.

Well, sorry about that, but had you used a few more adjectives or complete sentences in your OP, perhaps I would know 'why' you think they 'suck?'

If its not recoil, and you're not missing your targets, what then?  Since the total damage output is roughly equiviliant to the assault rifles when the increased rate of fire is taken into account, the smg is in fact dealing damage, a lot of it.  In fact, damage at close range is noteably higher than that of rifles, and with proper use, damage at mid-range for the locust and hornet arquably is similar if not better at mid-range as well.

I carry a Tempest X around with my when I'm playing Adept. The clip size mod and heat sink mod means that I can keep firing for a looooooooooooong time without having to stop and reload. Great for helping other classes take down the shields on an Atlas.

It's not just you. Heavy Pistols have equal or better damage and far better accuracy. I can't speak for the locust though, I don't have it.

Really? A quick burst or 2 from my tempest is enough to bring down most enemies

I wasn't too impressed with SMGs either. Bad stopping power. Most builds I just use a viper or carnifex.

The Hornet's playable, but you have to know to either hipfire it from cover or point blank things in the head with a Vanguard. In the latter case it's as good as a shotgun but considerably lighter.

The Tempest is quite good at stripping shields if you're playing a class that's bad at that. I have a Tempest X, and while I don't use it all that often it's a solid gun.

But in general I'd agree that the Carnifex more or less obsoletes SMGs and the Viper.

Maybe you're using them wrong.  The Tempest was my favorite weapon in Mass Effect 2, though in the multiplayer of the ME3 demo it has taken a backseat to the Revenant.

If you didnt notice, the Tempest is probably the best SMG, its lighter than the Avenger and does more damage. Only problem is the upward kick, but by dragging your mouse/thumbstick down, its solved.

Yeah, I found the pistols to be more effective than the smgs to be honest. One can argue that I'm not using it right, but I'd rather practice with the weapon that seems to be better at the moment and master than instead of "wasting" my time trying to get the other up to par.

That's funny...  How could I be not playing right if I'm winning?  But yes, it has a high rate a fire, good stopping power, high capacity... The recoil is the only problem, but that can be taken care of with an attachment.

Edit: BTW, a strong melee using krogan + Revenant w/ scope for long range attacks = beast.

SMGs are great for Vanguards
with a scope you can still hit stuff at range and when your in stuff face it just makes them melt
and they are light so you only need the one weapon and keeps your cool downs short

You can be doing pretty stupid things on bronze and still win.

THe recoil is not reduced enough by the mod to make it accurate enough for consistent headshots at anything but close range, also the reload time is horrible and the spread is horrible. Stopping power is much higher with the avenger or mattock if you can get consistent headshots. Also stopping power means very little against the nemies that are actually tough like the phantom or mech.

Personally I think each weapon appeals to different players/classes.
I like the SMG (But it still is my second choice, 1st is assault rifle)
My friend swears by the Shotgun and Heavy pistol though.

I only have the Hornet and the Shuriken. I don't know why, but I love the Shuriken. It's like a mini-Vindicator. I can even pick off a Guardian from long range without the scope. Headshots all day, e'ry day.

The Hornet is terrible and not worthy of the Gold weapon classification, though.
