Why do people like the Locust? It literally takes 50 shots to the head to kill an assault trooper.

a) you can head-shot anyone
In the wider game, doubt it would be as effective. Hell, didn't the Bioware developers mention that Husks in general are immune to head shots?

yeah I have to admit I've never liked smgs. Didn't like them in ME2 and don't like them ME3. At least the ones in the demo anyway. The full game might have something I like, but I doubt it.xhydeffx wrote...
Seriously. Just got the hornet. The gold weapon of the SMG's and it still sucks. I also have the predator X and tempest IX, with level 3 attachments and they STILL suck. Why bioware? Please make the SMG's better.

Dude, use the tempest. That Son of a **** is easily one of the best weapons in the game.
The only good thing about the tempest is that you never, ever, ever run out of ammo. Other than that, it's extremely inaccurate so it's not good at long range, it kicks (like all SMGs) so it's not good for headshots at short range, and it's weak so it's not as good as a shotgun at short range.
I liked the Tempest in ME2 but now it's just lame, like all the rest of them.

Shotguns are heavy... you carry the SMG for a light weapon that is better than nothing.

Can you say why not?Jestina wrote...
The Locust was the best smg in ME2, but it doesn't seem as powerful now.
Personally, I find that the Locust feels roughly on par with its performance in ME2, and a bit stronger if I've added a scope. I find that I can typically drop about 2-3 unshielded targets with one heat sink at medium range if aiming for the head, both in ME2 (normal difficulty) and in ME3 (bronze difficulty).
On top of that, I feel like the Tempest is a bit stronger in ME3, though that might be because back in ME2, the 5-shot burst wasted heat and the recoil made it difficult to score headshots. And then if you add a scope...

I was doing better with a light handgun than I was with the locust. I used it when I got it, thinking it would be as good as in ME2, but no it sure didn't seem like it. Took down an Atlus faster with the phalanx...now thats pretty much all I carry with my engineers and biotics.

Better than nothing? Maybe (probably not if your class has decent powers)
Better than a pistol? Almost never.

In ME2 you could control them, they shot where you aimed them and you didn't have to keep adjusting your aim because of extreme recoil. Also they were more accurate both firing from the hip and aiming.

The SMG don't have that... and alot of them have recoil issues so you can't make up for stopping power with more hits... and Sadly every other weapon makes up for that in some ways

One of my favorite weapons, the other being the vindicator. Always did Kasumi's mission first just so I could get the best smg for my characters that used them.

I haven't tried the Phalanx or Carnifex yet, but when I used the Predator in the single player part of the demo, it felt a lot stronger than it did in ME2. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it kill the husks right before the ventilation shaft in 1-2 shots? Plus, the heat sink is now good for 15 rather than 12 shots, and I think they slightly increased the RoF.Jestina wrote...

I actually have a lot more difficulty controlling the ME2 version of the Tempest than the ME3 version. In ME2, not only did the Tempest have substantial kick, but the kick direction was extremely random (unlike the Revenant, which always kicked up and slightly to one side in ME2).
I don't really remember much about the Locust's recoil in ME2 (which means it was probably minimal), but in the ME3 demo, I find it has so little that I actually tended to overcompensate for it when I first started using it.
But again, I put scopes on the Tempest and the Locust. Those add an accuracy bonus even without looking through them, so maybe that's why I haven't had any problems with them?

I would say that that's still true. It's just that a lot of other guns have been made substantially more powerful, so the Locust doesn't outshine them like it used to (e.g., the Avenger).Jestina wrote...
Locust had no noticeable recoil and could chew through anything.
