I've been playing the demo on occasion.

Then I went back to ME2 to do a baseline comparision between the ME2 Soldier and the ME3 Soldier.

The ME2 Soldier is too restrictive in terms of skill speccing compared to the ME3 Soldier.

To spec Concussive Shot, I had to pump points into Disruptor Ammo, which I didn't particularly want to waste skill points on.

My ME3 Soldier will spec these skills (hopefully max them out!):
Concussive Shot
Incendiary Ammo
Combat Mastery
Fitness

And if there's any points left over when that's done, I'll start dropping them into Adrenaline Rush.
The other powers don't concern me.

My question is, will we get to "wipe the slate clean" in ME3 and rewrite the Soldier spec to the ME3 standard?

I hope we can, because I don't like the idea of keeping the skill spec from ME2 and wasting valuable skill points on skills I never use.

given how powers have changed I assume you import the level and gain the points based on w/e level you imported.

e.g you import a lvl 26, game sees lvl 26 and give you 50 points (made up numbers btw, I could go add up what lvl 26 actually gets but I'm too lazy =p )

I was hoping that even if I import level 20, I start I level 1 in ME3.

You start at whatever level you were when you imported. If you want to start at level 1, you have to start a fresh ME3 character.

Really? Awesome. Much more satisfying to import that way--although I assume your actual skills have been re-set and that you'll have to reassign all of your points, yes?

More satisfying than a crapton of random credits and resources based on whatever level you were, al la ME2's import reward. And in this sense, more satisfying than BG1-BG2 imports, since in that case you could only really get a one-or-two-level advantage anyway (depending on class), and of course you lost all of your items because Irenicus nicked 'em and pawned 'em all off.

When you import, you'll bring your backstory decision tree from the first two games along with you. This will influence how certain parts of the game pan out and you'll also get to resolve your romance story too.

If you start a new game, you'll just get a default backstory which if ME2 is anything to go by, will mean you start off with the worst possible scenarios. If you have a character you can import I'd say do it. As for your experience level, the max you can start of at if you import is 30 but the level cap in ME3 is 60 so there will still be plenty to do.

Well, from what I heard, you get to customize the story if you're new to Mass Effect 3 (i.e: no savegame to import).

To what degree and how much, I couldn't say.
The only part of that I saw consisted of this statement (paraphrased):
Q. Who is dead? (pick one answer)
A. A lot of people.
A. Kaiden Alenko.
A. Ashley Williams.

It's just that anyone who imports a savegame skips the questionaire, so to speak.

And yes, I'm hoping all the skill points are reset, so I can spend them "freely".
Actually, it would be kinda essential, since the ME3 is as or more different from the ME2 skill tree as that game is from the ME1 skill tree.

The game could not realistically cope with converting ME2 skills into ME3 skills.
