I've played as a vanguard (singleplayer only), turian sentinel (mp only), and krogan soldier (mp only).  I have not been able to come up with a satisfactory strategy for them.  In singleplayer, I got frustrated because the game wouldn't let me use shockwave on them.  I ended up having to rely very heavily on Liara's singularity.  In multiplayer, I just aim for the eye slits and empty a few clips (obviously, not every bullet gets past through the hole in the shield).  Melee doesn't help at all.

with vanguard you should have pull, and you can use it to pull their shields away. Otherwise, someone can distract them and try to flank them (they have no protection on the sides or back, and you can kill them with one headshot)

For vanguard I find that nova also works well. Staggers them, they drop their shield, and then I headshot them. Even charge often staggers them in the same way.

most of these should work...
-pull can rip off their shields
-sentries can distract them (higher priority for some reason?)
-any attacks from the sides
-catching them unaware with cloak
-stasis makes them drop their shield
-concussive shot i THINK can stun them and make them temporarily make them be unguarded
-incinerate from the side should make them drop their shield(havent tested)
-throw a grenade behind themor to their side

Well there are plenty of ways to deal with guardians. As a vanguard I just use shockwave to stagger, and while they're staggered pump as many shots into them before they regain their defensive posture, rinse and repeat until they are dead. Powers like concussive shot, throw,or any other power that's causes a target to stagger works just as well, pull works best since it literally pulls the their shield out of their hands. You could also just try flanking, either by using your single player squad as a distration or by letting another player in mp get their attention first while you sneak in behind, that's works wonders for the teams I've been in.

As an Engineer, I usually just spawn a Combat Drone behind them. The drone hits them, they get distracted and turn around. Then I just hit them with Overload and/or pump them full of lead.

I dont know if someone has already mentioned it or not but If you have the Widow (or any sniper rifle im guessing) It usually just shoots straight through their shield. And if that doesnt work just aim for the legs or feet.

Never penetrated the shield in MP, even with the Widow but you can shoot clean through the eye slit for an instant kill but not the easiest shot.

I'm not the best shot with an SR to put it mildly, so I go with a stealth, flank and shotgun blast in the back. I know this doesn't help your vanguard question but just in case your thinking of playing an infiltrator.

EDIT: I decided to try this out and I did indeed get headshots through the shield with the widow.

If you have any sniper rifle...or an accurate weapon...aim for the viewport on the shield. It seems that its contains a headshot hitbox. My setup for a good portion of my Vanguards 10-20 levels were a setup with only 1 weapon. A sniper rifle. The semi-auto one, that the name escapes me at the moment. 1-2 shots through the view port always resulted in a missing head and a spray of blood.

Throw then Headshot, Pull then Headshot, curve incinerate then kill him, Drone behind and kill him

As a human female Sentinel, I've found it usually effective to Throw at them. They will usually stumble back and their shield is held off to the side; at level 20, I can easily unload some bullets into their head and kill them before they recover.

Claymore to the mailslot or Widow through the shield. otherwise use carnage on your Krogan to knock them back enough to expose them for a second.

I think using drones to have them them expose their backs is the best method.

Also: Aim directly into the peep hole on the shield----you get a headshot.

Krogan headbutt surprisingly staggers them like Throw or Shockwave. So... headbutt, then shotgun to the head and the deed is done.

I was pleasantly surprised to find shotguns to be quite effective when aimed at the 'mail slot', albiet at point blank range.

Second to that, if I have their attention and a teammate nearby in a somewhat open area, I'll circle around them so their back is exposed to the other person. Vice versa if the teammate has their attention.

Maxed force concussive shot staggers them (and the atlas I might add)
Sniper rifle through the mail slot, any powers that arc, if you get slightly higher ground.

If the shield slot is too difficult, aim for any exposed body part like the feet.

I just line up the eyehole and shoot it if I have an accurate weapon. If I don't, I aim for the arm carrying their riot gun, or at their feet.

I Widow them. Instant +484, no marksmanship needed

My vanguard just charges them and headshots them when they stagger from it. Engineer spawns a drone behind them and they always turn around.

Hardest is my soldier, but heavy melee works pretty good at exposing them for a bit.
