I'm curious to know what everyone's story is when it comes to how they first came about to playing Mass Effect, and if your like me you got hooked since the start menu of the first game.

Mine was interesting for the fact that at first I absolutely despised this franchise if you can believe it whithout even giving it a fair shake. It goes back to when Knights of the Old Republic first came out, and I was absolutely blown away by the game and immediately considered it one of my all time favorites.

A few years later KOTOR II was released, and while this wasn't a product of Bioware I still enjoyed it, despite its infamous cliffhanger ending. And knowing that Bioware was working on a new IP called Jade Empire, I commited myself to playing this game not really knowing what to think and lo' and behold, I loved this game as well, though not quite as much as KOTOR. So after all that, I figured "okay now Bioware can't possibly do any wrong, now their gonna go back to the staple franchise and their going to finish off the KOTOR trilogy and give us the game with Revan and the Exile that everyone's been waiting for."

Much to my utter dismay, I found out they were making yet another IP called Mass Effect, and I can say I was furious, knowing that KOTOR III may never come out now and be left on a horrible cliff hanger ending. How could they just drop Star Wars and come up with a cookie cutter copy?

This distate for Bioware lasted 15 months into March of 2009 before I saw one of my college roomates playing the game, borrowed the copy, finally decided to cave in an play it.. and needless to say I now own way too much N7 paraphernelia to count, and I consider the ME franchise amongst my top favorites over the KOTOR franchise, go figures right?

Saw some ME2 pics on a forum. Tried it for 30 mins. Then found out you can carry over ME1's save file. Then went to play ME1 and finished it. Then played ME2 and finished.

Creepy man in best buy saw me looking at ME2, said "that's a great game! you should really try it!" Words of wisdom... that I ignored.

*many months later*

After registering my DA2 pre-order, I got a free download for ME2. I played it, and was hooked. Spent 500 hours making my Shepard the best damn commander in the Alliance. And now... in 12 days, we'll reach the end. I'M SO EXCITED.

I borrowed ME2 from a friend, and I was hooked. I didn't want to give it back haha. I ended up beating ME2 twice before I went out and bought ME1, and the rest is history. I am a true Mass Effect Nerd.

12 days!!!

Bought my Xbox like 2 months before ME2 was being released. Went on IGN to look up their top 100 xbox 360 games of all time were. Mass Effect just happened to be number 1. Ask a friend of my brother's if he had Mass Effect and he did. End of story.

Ive always been a fan of Bioware's projects. So when I first saw that they were making a new game back in 2005, I knew I had to get it day one. And the rest is history.

A person I knew once, though never talked to, had his brother play a game called "Dragon Age: Origins". The game sparked a slight intrest in me, and I started dabbling through info on it. Never bought it, though it seemed intresting. On steam ME2 launched....and I was wondering "What is this hype about this game?" and still never bought it. Turns out, one day I bought Dragon Age Origins, after all thsi time in aug 6th 2010. Then I noticed "bioware". After loving Dragon Age Origins, I bought Mass Effect 1 & 2 in aug 18 2010 after watching the Mass Effect 2 launch trailer.

Since then I bought Dragon Age II and heavily anticipating ME3.

My friend suggested I play ME1 when it first came out. He assured me it was made by Bioware, of Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter, and Knights of the Old Republic fame. We both loved all of those games. However, I told him he was stupid and that it looked stupid and that I wouldn't waste my time. But, I had just got hired for a new job and didn't start for 3 weeks, so, only when I was super bored with nothing else to do around the house did I finally give it a chance.

ME2 day one purchase.
ME3 Preordered Digital Deluxe.

The store manager at my local GameStop noticed that I mostly played RPGs and how I would often spend a very long time looking in the store because I'm always wanting to get the best stories for my money. She actually brought up my account, called me when ME1 went on sale, and said she had a game she feels I would love. Been hooked on Mass Effect ever since lol.

Saw a friend play it on the X-Box, thought the vehicle sections looked silly but liked the cinematic parts.

A few weeks later I pirated it and played for a few hours, ended up liking the game so I bought it on Steam the same day.

Bought Mass Effect 2 soon after release and have now pre-ordered Mass Effect 3 Collectors Edition.

If it wasn't for piracy Bioware wouldn't have gotten a cent off me, now I've bought the ME triology, all DLC and Dragon Age Origins.

Actually mine was accidental. I saw it on the shelf of a video rent place. I had just gotten my 360 and decided to try it. That was back in early 08. Got hooked, bought the game, and have been playing ever since. 60+ playthroughs and with 12 more days to wait, I am in it until the end.

As for me,  a friend downloaded ME2 and i tried it out on his computer (since my computer at that time couldn't handle games older than CS:S). I immedatly got hooked, and now a few years later, i got ME1 and ME2, aswell as pre-orderd ME3.

Who says piracy don't help? ^^

a nice pattern on here i see, no one really brought it to begin with, either borrowed/pirated or 2nd hand, nice to know that if they try and stop these 3 things game sales will drop lol. off topic.

anyway. brought me1 on xbox360 first because i like bioware games before and they all have the same the same setting.

story
go to new areas
get team
story

good formula as the story is usually damn good (exception of DA2)

then i built me pc rig and got me1 on pc, got me2 day of release and pre ordered pc CE for me3 (although far too much bad controversy is surrounding me3 now so im skeptical if the CE is a waste of my money) :(

I discovered Bioware a few months after Neverwinter Nights came out. I saw that game on the store shelves, had a brand new computer but no games to play on it, and randomly bought it. I loved it. I've kept track of what the company has been doing ever since. Mass Effect sounded amazing to me because it'd be an RPG in space, but with an original story/universe (unlike Star Wars KotOR). I've always been an RPG fan and a sci-fi fan, so it fit me perfectly.

I picked it up the same way I picked up Oblivion.
I did no research and thought it was an MMO.
In my mind I was finally breaking down and accepting an MMO future of gaming.
Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised that it was a solo venture.

I played DA:O, and loved it. Then I heard that the ME games were similar in a lot of ways, so I got them and was immediately hooked.
