I've been a huge BioWare fan ever since I played Neverwinter Nights back when it first came out in 2002, so I'd been following their releases closely since then. I first became aware of Mass Effect about a year or so before it released, and since I'm both a fan of BioWare and a total geek for sci-fi, I was hooked right from the start. Unfortunately, it released for the Xbox 360, and I didn't get my first 360 until around April or May of 2008. Mass Effect was the first game I bought for it, if I recall correctly. Four years and far too many hours later, here I am waiting anxiously to see how the story ends.

I personally had seen stuff about Mass Effect before its initial release. For some reason I simply dismissed it and never thought much about it. The game came out and I didn't even think about buying it. One weekend I was sitting at home bored and out of games to play. So there I was watching television and by chance the original Mass Effect commercial came on. I thought, "Eh it looks interesting, if anything I can use it to take up my weekend or a few hours if it sucks".

So I ran out to the local video store, picked up a copy and went home feeling indifferent expecting nothing special. So I turn it on, make a male Shep, and short intro with Anderson and Udina. Right away I realize the music is catchy, than comes the scene with Shepard walking through the Normandy. From that moment on I'm hooked. I spend the next 20 hrs in front of my TV completely unable to escape the story. I completed the game, and exhausted I went to bed. After waking up I remembered you can play a female Shepard to. And thus began my obsession with FemShep. I spent needless hours on the xbox with my Femshep. The second ME was released on Pc i bought it and crafted my Femshep there as well. And well its continued on into ME2 and will into ME3 as well. <3 Bioware and Jennifer Hale, you have made me care for a video game character far more than I ever thought I could <3

I was looking for Starflight 3.
Someone told me they remade Starflight as Mass Effect.
I looked up Mass Effect and saw it was by KotOR peeps.
I bought, loved it then tried Mass Effect 2.
Needless cursing nearly ruined the story for me.
I checked out Mass Effect 3.
Now they've added blood/gore ... yecch!
I want to know how the story ends ...
... but not at this expense.

I read Tom Bissell's book Extra Lives, and the chapter about Mass Effect made me decide to play ME2 recently. I loved it enough to get a hold of an Xbox and am now catching up on the first game. For me the games are really about the dialog and character development, and the voice acting by Jennifer Hale.

This thread takes me back. . . Got a minute? You just might learn something. . .
Was pretty excited (bloddy 'ell, what year was it?) when those original teaser trailers for the 1st game came out. When Seps armor was still all white and stuff and not that iconic grey? The idea of an open ended space opera game set in a new, as of yet unestablished universe, had me excited. Been a fan ever since.

~But thats just my opinion, no need to go spreading it around.

In 2005 I read an article in a game magazine about Bioware's new franchise they were developing for the then brand-new Xbox 360. It looked pretty good, and so over the next couple of years I kept track of it and got it on release and I loved it. I didn't buy it because I wanted an RPG - I brought it because I was looking for something set in space that had a decent story. I had so many sword and magic style games, and I wanted to mix things up. One of the best purchases I've made, and ME2 pretty much cemented this as one of my favourite franchises, along with Half-life and Command and Conquer.

A friend was interested in ME1 and pushed me to buy it, so he could see if it's any good *g*
I hadn't even heard of it. Didn't know BioWare, either. When I found out it was a sci-fi game I was like "Nah, not into that. Shooter gameplay?! Hell, no! "
This friend kept referring to excellent reviews. And it was an RPG after all.
Sooo... I did buy it eventually, expecting to hate it. And was hooked immediately.
Playing a woman? One I could customize, too? Dialogue choices, wha-??
Before I had only been playing JRPGs you see *laughs*
By the time ME1 entered my life, I had been going through a little crisis, thinking I was getting too old for video games. Mostly because I couldn't relate to the teenage heros of JRPGs anymore. And there really wasn't much else on the consoles.
How wrong I was! Switched to western games and found new happiness.

Thank you, Bioware!

I've been a Bioware fan since 1998 when they released one of the best games of all time. I haven't played a single game from Bioware that I didn't love to death. So, it was only natural when ME was announced, I got incredibly excited for it and it turned out to be better than I could have ever hoped for.

Saw a bunch of reviews for the first one. Wanted to play it but never got around to buying an Xbox. Saw a bunch of reviews for the second one. Wanted to play it but never got around to buying an Xbox. Saw a bunch of reviews for the port of the second one to PS3. Saw the demo on PSN, downloaded it, loved it. Saw it on Amazon for 20 bucks. No brainer. Bought it, fell in love with it.

Here I am bouncing off the walls waiting for three.

I played KOTOR and loved it.

My therapist doesn't really let me talk about the decision to do The Jade Emire Strikes Back instead of KOTOR 2, but I was intrigued to see what Bioware could do with KOTOR-esque series.

I got ME1 about a month after ME2 was released, along with Bioshock, as they were 2 for £10 in tesco.

I fully expected to like Bioshock more, based on what little I'd read on the two, and only got ME as they came as a pair. Of course I also expected Bioshock to be alot more like Fallout 3 or Oblivion, and ever got around to finishing it.

About 2 weeks later, bored of Bioshock, I installed ME to my 360, booted it up, and was delighted to find the game I'd been fantasising about and wishing would get made since I was 4.

Tore through it, then immediately played through again, then went and grabbed ME2, and found it was even better than the first game!

After that, I was hooked, playing ME between every other game I got, sometimes more than once. I bought everything I could for it, art books, DLC, lithos, figures, comics, novels. I then picked up DA:O, KOTOR, JE and DA2 just to get some ME like games.

I even had to buy a second copy of ME2, after apparently wearing it out somehow.

I loved the series, it was absolutely the best pair of games I'd ever, ever played, and I irritated the hell out of my fiancée talking about it. Then I got her the PS3 version when it came out, and she understood at last.

And then I read the leaks, and learnt of all the stupid ideas, lame cop outs, and bollocks, unsatisfying, kick you in the balls endings we might be lumbered with,  how the ME 2 fans had been screwed, and how lame the new squadmates are, and suddenly the hundreds of hours and pounds I'd spent login the series might have be a complete waste of time.

Still Multiplayer is bloody awesome.

I was a great KotOR one, once I spent the night at my wife's (we were only in engagement back then), and next morning I saw her firing up the console ('twas before the PC release) and playing something with a BioWare logo.
Me, speinding hundreds of hours with the Baldur's Gate and KotOR series, with Jade Empire and Neverwinter Nights, when I saw that BioWare logo, I knew there was something really good going on.
And luckily, it made its way to the PC.

Like this.

Sorry, couldn't help myself!:D

I actually read the description for ME1 and took my sweet time deciding whether it'd be a game I would enjoy. It was and it is.:)

Saw Mass Effect 2 commercials on tv. Saw that ME1 was on the Xbox live marketplace and thought it was a cool game so I downloaded it. Then I bought ME2.

I had avoided Mass Effect because it seemed very Star Wars-y (slightly ironic considering I've enjoyed SWTOR since release) and I got my first Xbox about two years after ME1's release. With all the hype surrounding ME2, I noticed I had a Target gift card from Christmas for $50, and asked my friend for his copy of ME1 so I could test it out.

While I very much disliked the shooter gameplay in comparison to Gears, and the game showed its age in framerate drops, glitches, etc., I'd never played a game with such an engrossing character narrative. Ever. And being the writing-**** I am, I became addicted, and the very night I beat ME1, I threw on a coat, drove to Target just before they closed and bought ME2. Then continued playing when I got home.

The ME franchise changed the way I look at games. It's been eye-opening to what RPGs offer. I've never enjoyed the monotonous side of RPGs-- the slow battles, the inventory micromanagement that feels like a minimum wage job at the pause menu, the sub-par presentation and animation in many cases... etc.-- but ever since ME1, I've looked at every game's storytelling in a different light. I no longer judge them as "games", but as media. As art. At least, in some cases.

Games like Resident Evil I still play for other reasons besides narrative. Let's face it; not all games are meant to be good stories.

I was actually watching gameplayvideo's on youtube of halo 3(I believe). when I stumbled upon the machinema serie Red VS Blue of Roosterteeth, I liked the serie so i decided to subscribe to Roosterteeth. After 2 days or so they uploaded a achievementhunter video of Mass Effect 2. And it peaked my interest so I decided to buy the game and it was epic so a week later I bought Mass Effect 1 which I also liked a lot and now i'm also 'hooked' and i cant wait till Mass Effect 3.

PS: thanks Roosterteeth :P

Bought KOTOR2 and loved it, told all my friends about it, then they said I should try out Mass Effect when I get an xbox cause I'd love that.
So I did.

Being a fan of KOTOR, i met another fan back in 06, he happened to be my driving instructor he mentioned Mass Effect. I hadn't had a good game in a while so pre-ordered the collector's edition. And here i am 6 complete games of ME1/4 of ME2 later.

The first time ever that I heard of Mass Effect was in a magazine of a friend of mine, The concept art really peaked my interest. Two years later I went to a university bought my own Xbox and was looking for some cheap games. And there it was looking at me from the shelf and I didn't hesitate and bought it. I really enjoyed it. Few months later ME2 came out.

At some internet forum, someone posted a picture of a woman who was wearing a blonde bob wig. Someone else said she "looked like Dr. Chakwas from Mass Effect." I googled the character, came across the wiki, linked to numerous other articles pertinent to the game, and thought it might be worth buying.

It was.
