Honestly, a Steam holiday sale where it went up for $5. I had heard of the game, and figured hmmmmm.... its only $5.
Little did I know.
Now I've preordered the DDE of ME3... I've never bought a collector's edition of anything.
How did it all start for you?

My brother was busy playing his pirated copy of Fallout 3, which got him really involved in RPG's. I mentioned that he might like the Mass Effect series, being a critically acclaimed RPG and all. He ended up getting an iso of Mass Effect 2. It turns out he didn't like it as much as I did, so I bought all the games and whatnot, and it also got me into some of the other Bioware IP.

After finally getting me a gamer PC, I felt like a kid in a candy store on Steam's Summer Sale.... One of the deals was ME1 and ME2 DDE for 30 bucks. Considering all I'd heard about them from Screwattack's Destin... I thought I'd give it a try, and even if I didn't like it, whatever, just to hear what all the fuss was about.
God damn.
I was immersed in the first game. The gameplay was meh, but being a new PC gamer, it wasn't that shocking. The story... Good lord the story. I spent at least 120 hours total playing ME1 before even touching ME2 and then I played ME2... The fast paced fighting was awesome! I was a little bit sad being restricted to the Terminus systems.... But whatever. I was Commander Shepard, someone on the cover of Badass Weekly... Now the story ends in less than two weeks. What a ride Bioware has given me.

DA2's desperate promotion. ME2 was free with DA2. I gave it a chance a year after when I saw ME1 on sale. There was so much praise for the series that I caved. Gunfights still aren't my thing, but the story is pretty cool.

Rented Mass Effect from Gamefly - hit 'Keep it' 6 hours later. Instantly hooked from the moment they made the character creation the restoration of your file.

ME1, saw it cheap on Steam. Figured what the hell, give it a shot.
-Was alright. Some parts were nice, others not so much.
ME2, was on sale on Steam. Figured take the shot. Mistake since this was a few days before Christmas, and my brother apparently got me the physical CE. Still didn't cost much, and he kept the CE.
-Was alright. Thought it was great once I finally finished a year later, and just in time for ME3. Did get Kasumi and LotSB, but didn't think it was worth Overlord or Arrival. Brother, on the other hand, became hooked, so the mistake wasn't much of a mistake anymore. He pre-ordered the ME3 CE. I might just get the DDE.

This was about 5 or 6 years ago.
My buddy had gamefly, and it kept recommending it to him, and he just kept brushing it aside until finally he rented it.
He was blown away, and immediately told me about it, I eventually picked it up and I was blown away as well.
That's it.

A friend told me that he read about ME when it was console only game and that it finally came out on PC. He said very good things about it so I went to game shop and bought it.
I fell in love right after character creation screen

Mass Effect was the first single-player game I tried after a long period of MMOs (to which I've grown tired of). Saw the recommendation at X-Play (as it was cheap when I bought it), played it, loved it, and played only single-player games since.
Also Mass Effect was the game that made me realize that Bioware was a studio, lol. Didn't realize it when I played Kotor. Oops. ^^;;

I found out Claudia Black was in Dragon Age: Origins.
Didn't like Bioware's products. Neverwinter Nights. Hated it. KOTOR? Boring. Jade Empire? Not worth remembering. Mass Effect? You're joking.
But I'm a Farscape fanboy and risked it. And I loved it. I love Dragon Age: Origins. So I gave them a chance with Mass Effect 2. Loved DAO enough to give them that benefit. And I loved ME2. So I'm back to being a fan. I'm still skeptical because of past products, but they'd done well enough recently.

I started with Mass Effect 2 on the PS3. I heard about the game when it first came out. A lot of hype around it on launch, so I thought "Eh it looks good. I'll try it" and then I was hooked. I own both a PS3 and 360 so after beating it I quickly dashed to Gamestop and bought Mass Effect 1 and 2 for the 360. :alien:Now I cannot stop playing them:alien:

When it first came out, my cousin was staying at my home. We were bored and I told him to download Mass Effect, since I heard it being a cool game from magazines. We started to play it(we didn't understand anything, our english sucked at that time), he said crappy graphics(because of the film grain) and I agreed with him. We deleted it immediatly because It was a horrible game. When I saw the ME2 launch trailer, I desided to give it another chance, I played it (and understood everything this time),found out how to close film grain too. When I found out how amazing it was I bought an original copy. Not playing it for the first time was a good choice I think since I wouldn't understand anything and It may have prevented me to like the franchise. I really dodged a bullet

I saw ME1 sitting on the bargain shelf at some department store. I'd heard some intriguing things about it so I figured I'd give it a whirl. I spent about an hour in the character creator making my first Shepard (which is still the Shepard I consider my "canon"). By the time I got to Noveria I was hooked. I remember thinking that it was the first time I'd felt a video game (truly) successfully pulled off the concept of an "interactive movie".

I was in middle school. I have always loved sci fi. I was a big fan of E3 and other game showcases. This brilliant footage changed my life: http://www.youtube.c...?v=Ss5y4h8m9dE' class='bbc_url' title='Lien externe' rel='nofollow external'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ss5y4h8m9dE
The games don't seem to be approached from that perspective or vision anymore, but they are still great nonetheless and Mass Effect was more than I could have dreamed of.

Rented ME1 from Blockbuster 2 weeks after it came out when I was 14 on a whim, didn't kow ANYTHING about the game. Thought it was cool, bought ME2 much later, found out yu could save transfer 3 and a half years later, bought ME1. Loved the series now.

I read people talking about it. Then I decided to buy it. There was a Mass Effect Platinum Edition with lots of extras and I got it.

I caught some ME1 promotional videos in the run-up to its launched, but was never really enthused. A couple of months after it launched, I saw a friend of my brother's playing it, and was impressed. Borrowed my brother's copy, and the rest as they say is history.

Mass Effect 2 was being released soon and my friend was talking about it so I asked him to tell me more about the game. When I heard that it was essentially a sci-fi RPG with a good story where you had party members and all that I had an interest for the game, which I had initially not cared about due to the generic shooter-like ads.
After reading about imports I decided to buy the first game along with it. Although since Mass Effect 1 had a lower rating I went in with relatively low expectations. I soon realised that the game was much better than the reviews I read had let on.
After completing the games back to back I was a fan.

I saw ME1 in the bargain bin and was ready to try something new since Halo Reach was a bust and didn't feel like getting Black Ops. After seeing the BW logo on it and thinking back to how much fun I had with DAO/KOTOR picked up the game and was hooked to the series ever since.

My story with this franchise is kind of unusual. Way back in Christmas of 2007 my father bought me an Xbox 360 for Christmas. I had heard of Mass Effect and had followed its development, but wasn't sure if I wanted it at the time. Even back then the Mako segments were panned by more than one person and I was really more interested in games like X2/X3 and other space traders (Escape Velocity, anyone)? Well, I was poor at the time and I was about to head out to study for an MBA. I wanted to get a new game for my 360 (other than the bundled titles) and decided I'd get Mass Effect and Rise of the Argonauts (for some reason). At school, I remember popping in ME in the early months of 2008 and played it for about 2 hours. At which point I set it aside and got distracted by other things.
A little more than two years later it's the summer of 2010 and I'm back home, poor and looking for work like everyone else. ME2 was out already though having not really been impressed with the original (initially) I wasn't interested in forking over 60 bucks for the sequel. I remember being upset that I hadn't had money for any new games and then remembered I had yet to really go through Mass Effect at all. Bearing that in mind, I decided I'd give the game a go, absent any alternatives, and I found it to be very engaging. It wasn't a perfect experience but I felt I got my money's worth and even bought Bring Down the Sky as well. I can't say I was "sold" on the series, but it got me interested enough to pick up ME2 in October of that year to see how good it would be.
I must say I really enjoyed ME2, probably more than the original, and that's what got me interested in the series itself and what sort of payoff we'd be getting down the line. I was a little miffed that #2 didn't really advance the overall plot very much, but from what I can see it was really centered more on the various characters than plot progression anyway, so I could let that slide. Interestingly enough, this is the fist time I can really remember anticipating a game's release in many years. I'm not one to usually play demos or carefully follow the development of a particular title, at least not in recent memory. Oh well, I'm sure ME3 will be worth it. I just hope it turns out to be better than a lot of people are expecting.
Additional Note: I gave it some thought and I haven't played a game demo in anticipation of the full version since Homeworld 2. Hard to believe it was really that long ago.

When it was announced that DA2 would use the dialogue wheel, I picked up ME1 so that I could take an informed position on the matter. I enjoyed it (ME1), so I picked up the second one and continued the same character.
