I had never even heard of the game until my friend kept talking about it and talking about it. He was too excited to get the game. I never really got too excited about it and when it came out I basically said "I'll give it a shot". However I picked the game up and loved it from the very moment I put it in my xbox.
Funny thing is my friend never even beat the game, and I've made 10 playthroughs on Mass Effect 1 and 7 of Mass Effect 2.
How did it all start for you?

I was high on Halo 3 and wanted a game that felt just like it. Got Mass Effect 1. Hated it. Sold it.
3 years later.
ME2 came out. Didn't care. Saw how much GOTY it got it later. Bought it. Loved it. Bought ME1 again.

Was with my wow guild I think at the time, was on an off-raid day and a couple of them were playing it while in vent. They were discussing it and I asked them what they were playing. I heard of the game before, but didn't pay attention to it since I didn't own an xbox at the time but since I was interested I picked up the PC version a few months after launch for 20 bucks. Loved it immediately.

Twas the Steam sale of christmas 2009. The game looked intresting enough, even though i'd never heard of it before.
I was hooked almost instantly, and still to this day it's the best £3.50 i've ever spent. I guess i got kind of lucky too because i finished ME1 around a week or two before ME2 was released.

I read the first book, and saw that it was a prelude to ME1 from Bioware. Having been a Bioware fan for years, I bought ME1. I was hooked from the beginning. End of story.

The name just popped up here and there, and I was hearing positive things about Mass Effect, so I looked it up, watched reviews and stuff.. Was a little skeptical, but I decided to go for it anyway. The moment I booted up the game, I was sold. I wish I had bought the collectors edition xD Despite all the technical issues, it quickly became my favorite game of all time. BioWare should do a remake next gen or something, ironing out all the technical issues and with improved graphics xD I'd buy that game 10 times if they remake it 10 times.

My brother bought it, showed me the front cover. I said "I'm not interested in playing some storyless space-shooter about some hero guy saving everyone with his romance-waif along for the sex appeal", but I watched him start up the game and play the intro. When I noticed it had character creator, dialogue options, and an interesting intro, I thought it couldn't hurt to give it a go. The more I played it, the more I loved it. It was the first Bioware game I'd played, and I was still a fairly casual gamer before playing ME1. After that, I had to get DAO. And then ME2. And then JE. And then DA2.
And now here I am!

A friend recommended ME2 to me, but I wanted to know the story first since it's a series, so I got ME1 first to see how it is. I ended up really enjoying it from the get-go then went on to play ME2. Got some of my other friends into it and now we're all psyched about ME3. Didn't join BSN until a few months ago though. Didn't really know it existed... somehow... lol

I had been out of gaming for years. My son's xbox died RROD. I gave it a go at fixing it, and then I needed something to test it with to see if it would continue working. He had been playing me2 and been trying to get me to try it. Well I got hooked. Went back and played me1 afterwards and have now almost finished da:o and have da2 waiting and me3 pre-ordered. ;P

Just got out of AIT and was doing a ConUS mission, and had a lot of money for the first time in my entire life. A buddy told me about ME2, played for 5 minutes of ME2 and decided I needed to buy ME1 first, after that I was hooked.

Didn't know about Mass Effect 1 till a week after it was released. Looked at the box art online then went out to pick it up (without reading any reviews or what it was about.) Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised

By Accident really.
Was walking down an isle at Wal-Mart and saw a PC copy in a bargain bin. Never heard of the game at the time but picked it up on an impulse purchase..... last copy they had also. Rest is history.

A couple years ago, a friend of mine told me I'd really like Mass Effect since my favorite game at the time was Star Wars KOTOR. I went out and bought it, and I liked it a lot but I didn't fall in love with it. I only played it once, but it was enough to make me want to play the sequel. It wasn't until ME2 that I became a huge fan of the series. I played ME2 several times, went back and played ME1 a couple more times, and now here I am waiting for my ME3 collector's edition.

Back in 2009 i picked up ME1 in the $10 bin, then a year later got ME2 for $20. I played those 2 games more than any other game I own. Now I pre ordered the CE, and I'm gonna pay the full $80 for it.

I don't remember.
What I think happened was I heard about it and rented it. Didn't care for it, so I returned it. Forward to an unknown amount of time later, I'm at Target and see the game for $20. I make a mental note of it, and bought it on a return visit. Largely ignored it, got frustrated because I hated all of my custom Shepards. Finally got a custom Shepard I liked (the same Shepard I used in ME2 and will in ME3), played through and loved it.

Been a Bioware fan since NWN. I was crushed when I learned it was only released on X-Box, scrambled to my EB Games as soon as I realised it was out for PC. Guy behind the counter said "Mass Effect? Nice."
Yes. Yes it is.
