Is there any way to edit the areas of the official campaign like there was in Aurora? I just want to do simple things like add an item on the ground or something of that nature.

Items can't be placed on the ground. You're going to need to add a chest to an area from the OC and add it to the inventory, or create an NPC to give it to the player. There are a number of tutorials with people adding content to the OC. I have not attempted this... look at what the boy and girls are doing to add a storage chest to the camp area.

It is possible via script to place items (on the ground even) into the OC areas, though I do not remember where I saw this. Check the wiki, I believe it is there, or ask in the scripting forums.

There are a couple ways of doing it, but I'm getting the sense that the more responsible way is to add things through scripts rather than alter areas, which would mean that only the more recent alteration of the area would stick, so you wouldn't be able to use more than one mod of that area. Haven't tried this myself, but I remember seeing some tips on the wiki about adding content in such a way that it would be compatible with most other mods affecting the same area.
