 G,day all.

Latecomer to ME games here. I saw ME1 & 2 on Steam for about 10 bucks each at Christmas and think, why not. Especially with the third one coming out soon. So I've blasted my way through ME1 twice now and missed Level 60 by about 80 thousand points, partly because I skipped all that driving around all over the place looking for rocks and old artifacts (didn't notice I was getting xp for that on the first playthrough - Gah!) and partly because I didn't realise the gap from Level 50 to 60 was so huge and assumed I'd hit 60 so easily that I just sat in the Mako and wasted everything in sight. By the time I found out I was on bloody Virmire.

Okay, so I'm far from the first and people have missed it a lot more narrowly than that, and I've seen from round here that I can open the console and cheat my way on to Level 60, but I seem to be having problems getting the thing to open. I mapped it to Tab rather than the tilde but nothing happened. I should just be able to open up a saved game at any point, say just down the steps from where I get to give Saren his final kicking, and hit Tab to open the console, right? I'm using a Mac keyboard so could it be something to do with that? Or does it have to be done in a menu screen or something instead of in game?

I'm also having a rethink on the console anyway. I'm a bit worried if it'll do anything to the import I want to use for ME2 when I start that at the weekend, but it does sound like the extra credits from a Level 60 import would be worth having. So I wondered if there's a speed run through option doing only the main missions plus BDtS and side quests that will affect something in ME2 & 3. I guess what I'm asking is if there's a list of all the ME1 stuff that does not get carried forward so I can have all the non-essential worlds/systems/tasks on a post-it note on the monitor and just not go there?

Advice appreciated.

Are you sure you followed the instructions correctly http://masseffect.wi.../wiki/PC_Cheats
Try mapping it to tilde rather than tab. Also if you've already finished the game you could just load up the last save you have of that playthrough and level up before you fight saren. Importing a lvl 60 ME1 character makes it possible to reach lvl 30 in 1 ME2 playthorugh.

Well, I would have been sure apart from that it didn't do anything. So either I made an error or my expectation of when/where it works was off, which is why I was asking if it should work in mid-game. Error seems likely but I got the instructions from that link and just copied and pasted the extra line, which is small enough that there doesn't seem much to go wrong. But if it's supposed to just bring the console up at any time as I assumed then I'll recheck it.

Tilde on my keyboard is shift+` which is why I picked a key next to it that isn't - or at least shouldn't be - doing anything and doesn't need a modifier key press as well.

That was certainly the plan. I've got a save of my second playthrough literally at the foot of those steps in the council room. I wanted to load that up, open the console, and then add just enough xp that when I deal with Saren and bionic hopper Saren I'd be over the Level 60 threshold. Is that what you're saying? Feels sort of cheaty but after I spent all that time on the first go surveying every planet, checking every asteroid belt, driving the Mako over what felt like every suare centimetre I was stuffed if I was going to do it all over again..... though of course I would have if I'd known I bloody needed to to get the points.

Or are you saying use the last save from the first playthrough? Don't really want to use playthrough #1 as I made some choices I decided I didn't like. Not all that big a deal on most things but playthrough #1 butter wouldn't melt in my femshep's mouth and angels followed her around looking for tips on being good. Second time I had her being mostly paragon but a nasty **** to some who deserved it so it'd push her renegade score up. I really prefer nice girl with the odd bad day femshep#2 in the second game rather than the unnaturally good femshep #1.
