"update: Vegas Balloon is traveling a lot farther than we anticipated. It's looking like it will be in Arizona. We've split up."

Hey Jesse any idea why Las Vegas is locked for many people?
They probably haven't agreed to the contest rules. In flight balloons won't show up until you do.

Yeah, Derek posted about it earlier in the thread. They couldn't get permission or something along those lines.

Anyone know if nrmndy was recovered? If not I'm after it bright and early tomorrow morning...
They found it in the tree trying to use slingshots last I checked on IGN... or is that Shep?? I dont know anymore!
That was Shepard. Normandy is showing on the bioware map at being on a cliff at the 1200 elevation, but APRS has a cluster of signals 2 miles south at 184 feet up a tree I think in a creek half mile from highway one. Unfortunately the last data burst from it was over 8 hours ago. So either the battery died, or someone may have found it.

*Click on the city name to open the tracking data. Cities will become unlocked one hour prior to launch if you've agreed to the contest rules. All times are in the local time of the launch city.
So only those who sign up to this can access the tracker data city logos?
Thats just freaking garbage.

Launch team says the balloon is currently at 44356ft.
It's only half way up. Balloon burst won't happen until at least 87,000 ft.

How do they figure this out? Like for the one in NY tomorrow, it says there will be winds 25-35 mph W and yet they have it going E. Don't winds effect it at all? Sorry, I'm pretty stupid when it comes to science.

Well, in signing up, you pretty much sign a waiver that says if you get hurt searching for these things, you won't sue Bioware or EA.

I'm pretty sure that means the wind is from the west.

That's winds FROM the West at 25 mph so it will push the balloon East.

Thanks, found the post.
Was half expecting this, DGAC wouldn't want to risk some crazy Canadians to launch some "mass effect" thing into the sky and blow up the capital.

according to my air force buddy... did they account for the extra weight or have an automatic balloon popper?
As the balloon climbs the air get less dense and the helium starts to expand to the bursting point of the balloon. Then the payload begins to free-fall through the upper atmosphere. Generally, a parachute is attached to the top of the payload, but there is not enough air in the upper atmosphere for the parachute to function. s the payload falls, it reaches denser air, and the parachute begins to provide some drag to slow the descent rate. Eventually the parachute is fully functional, and the payloads land at about 15 mph.
