Ok so acording to Illusive Mans e-mail the gun is quide old and was used by coloniests.
In ME3 many Cerberus troops use it Shepard uses it and in the Take Earth back trailer you can see Alliance troops using them.
So how did coloniests old semi-auto assault rifle become a major weapon of different military factions?
Why do everyone use the M-96 Mattock.

It was very popular in ME2 because it was awesome in ME2.
In this game, it's **** though.

Maybe since Earth got wrecked, they resorted to using stockpiled supplies of old but reliable weapons.
Also the Mattock is genre-savvy considering their main enemy is the Husk, which resemble zombies. The Mattock is a semi-automatic, which resembles something like the M1 carbine, a staple zombie-fiction weapon. The semi-automatic, basic and more reliable nature of the M1 Carbine makes it more effective against hordes of zombies than say, an M4. This basically translates right into ME3 with not only the description of the Mattock, but also its functionality.
In short, whoever made the trailer probably read World War Z and the Zombie Survival Guide.

I don't. My crew always uses the Avenger. The mattock seems very slow to me.

Because its powerful and being semi-auto you don't get rookies spraying bullets and wasting ammo.

Mattock while slower then the Avenger in its shooting speed, hits hard and DAMN HARD.
For example
say speed of avenger is 8/10 and mattock 4/10
the attack of avenger per bullet is say 5 while mattock is 12
Which do you think would be the better weapon? It was pure kickass in ME2, haven't tried it in ME3.
It was a friggin killing machine in ME2, the BEST AR in the game, i loved it!

Exactly. Just because something is old, doesn't mean it sucks.

Semi auto gives you in theory much better shot grouping, which is eliminated by a high level AR stabiliser, but really I think because the Mattock is the most common unlock. I haven't got anything else in the many packs I've bought. A few upgrades for the Avenger but that's it.
The Mattock also hits just that little harder than the Avenger and the reduced recoil from firing semi auto helps you pick out those headshots, and the guardian shield slit.

Maybe it's cheaper to make large amounts of and is already proven to be efficient in combat.

Are you sure that's the M-96 Mattock you're seeing? Cerberus looks to either be using an SMG or the M55 Argus.

Because it's awesome & sound is much better then Revenant.

But the Revenant is a machine gun.
Therefore, Revenant > Mattock
Machine guns FTW! Hopefully ME3 has more than one model.

Because 1 well placed shot is far more effective than 100 randomly sprayed rounds.
