I can't use it in ME3 MP, it's too disheartening, they nerfed it to all hell and back

My Mattock X would like to have a word with you. It isn't nerfed at all. It kicks all sorts of arse

Their manufacturers?
I've seen one AK, built from kit, sent bullets sideways.

they malfunction and jam just like every other weapon system out there,

No objections here.
Generally they hit human-sized target at 200m, if you dream about x-rings, well, look for another rifle.

XDMMX wrote...

what makes the AK popular is that you can train an uneducated peasant or child to use it and you can manufacture a lot of them quickly.

Not sure about "quick manufacture" - quality-price equation is still there, IMHO they are generally more reliable and more forgiving to poor maintance just because of their construction, with greater tolerances and higher speed of moving parts. With masses of those moving parts - no wonder it's harder to score x-rings with every shot. 7-8 rings are fine though. Add generally less "match-grade" ammunition supply...

Return to topic - because Mattock allows me to place my shots where I want them, even with totally ruined projectiles velocities in ME2 (and probably still ME3, not just fill air in enemy vicinity with bullets and pray they took 20.

I guess no one told them it got nerfed.

Wait til' you get ahold of the higher versions...  Mattock IV is close to the same as Mass Effect 2!

If Avenger I > Mattock I, I think it's safe to assume that Avenger IV > Mattock IV

Because Mattock is space M14 and everybody loves the M14.

Or space SLR if your British and remember that far back.

Is it weird that I think this is the sexiest picture I've seen on this forum?
There must be something wrong with me...

Probably not, pictures of real life guns don't give you the same "uncanny valley" vibes as the pictures of bioware characters trying to look sexy.

It's because people are recognizing that sometimes old things work better than flashy new ones - and they might be cheap to manufacture and modify.

I'm just glad the Mattock isn't the end-all-be-all it was in ME2. I loved it then, but I'm glad variety and balance have returned.

Because they're smart, and they know the Mattock is more powerful than the avenger, and it doesn't waste so much ammo.

Biased statement is biased. :D

Oh well, if those leaked screenshots are for real, nothing will be able to compete with the Geth Pulse Rifle, so the Mattock's stats really don't matter.

It was OP in ME 2 and it was supposed to be. The Email about EDI running numbers on the Mattock was part of that. I mean revolutionaries today still use the good ole AK 47 with superior models out on the market. In the ME 3 demo I feel it still edges out over the other two assault rife options even with the nerf. It edges out most of the guns in the demo but not all of them. (Phalanx, anyone?") I use the mattock on my Turian sentinel when i would much prefer to use the Revenant with that huge recoil degregation  that ive invested into, but the Mattock just outshines, even when it doesnt need the recoil buff.

...They use the AK-47 because it was mass-produced, easy to use and maintain, and cheap to get on the black market. They'd be using AKMs and AK-74's if they could.

That aside, what ReconTeam said.

Ok so acording to Illusive Mans e-mail the gun is quide old and was used by coloniests.
In ME3 many Cerberus troops use it Shepard uses it and in the Take Earth back trailer you can see Alliance troops using them.
So how did coloniests old semi-auto assault rifle become a major weapon of different military factions?

The Mattock has a lot of accuracy and stopping power which makes it an excellent choice to use against enemies that lack internal organs and shatter when struck with enough force.

I rarely play a class that uses assault rifles, and never choose it as my weapon training on the Collector ship (except with my one soldier, who chose the Revenant). All my other characters are perfectly happy with the Locust.

The Colt Model 1911 is a 101 year old .45 ACP  design of a side arm. So why do all US Special Forces still use it? because its just that good. Same thing applies with the Mattock, it may be old but old != bad.

The problem isn't finding shotguns, it's finding anything else.

I used Mattock in ME 2 only if I was in desperate need of firepower, most of the time other weapons.

Because the Mattock is, statistically, better in nearly every way.

Fast, but highly controllable rate of fire. Semiauto, but can fire very quickly. Highly accurate. High damage. Good magazine capacity. Good hip-fire spread.

So, it does more damage, more accurately, with a higher DPS magazine capacity, a highly adaptable, controllable, and versatile RoF, high damage per shot, good magazine capacity, and it sounds cool/powerful.

The only weapon that could compare in ME2 was the Revenant.
