My Mattock X would like to have a word with you. It isn't nerfed at all. It kicks all sorts of arse

I never get anything cool in the veteran crates, im apparantly supposed to use the katana exclusively

lol... I am in the same situation

try the recruit crates, i at least found a few scimitars there.

The problem isn't finding shotguns, it's finding anything else.

I find one shuriken for one everything else. myself. :P

Wow.

I'm pretty sure the question was not why do players like the Matlock, but why do NPC's carry what is considered an outdated weapon? Mercs, agents, special ops ... sure. You want a rifle with reliability and control. Shepard and her squad fit this profile. But is this really a good weapon to issue the rank and file troops?

The whole concept behind the Mattock is total nonsense, so it doesn't surprise me that its deployment doesn't make much sense, too.

I actually hate Mattock. I don't like how it looks at all and I don't see much point in it when there's Viper. Doesn't really matter if NPC's use it, they die anyway. With Mattock or without Mattock.

Same reason the Ak-47 & M-18 are used today. Balance and stopping power

The avenger is a close second, but I prefer the vindicator. It's more accurate than the avenger and it does more damage per button press than the mattock does in two (36*3 vs 50*2) It hav a low ammo reserve, but that's what the locust is there for. Avenger's probably going to take first with recoil dampening

It works pretty well against husks, especially if you aim for their legs.

You might want to rethink that. That's only 108 vs 100, and I can get off 4-5 shots with the Mattock in the time it takes for the Avenger to fire twice, making the comparison 216 vs 250. Also consider that those three bullets from the Avenger aren't as accurate as three shots from the Mattock, which would reduce the Avenger's damage to 36-72. Ouch!

I chose a lot of recruit packs early, to level up my Appearence. I kept getting Katana upgrades, so eventually I said **** it and started using Vanguards. Now my Vanguard is level 20, I'm pretty decent with it, and my Engineer is also using the Katana X and Phalanx.

I'll admit that the Mattock is indeed good, but I prefer the Revenant give it a stability mod and more firepower and you can deal out some serious damage, I also like the Avenger as well

the vindicator gets a tighter shot cluster after you get the accuracy upgrade. I can - regularly - get a one burst one kill with the vindicator. the mattock, it takes me three or four shots depending on protection.
also, thats presuming that the mattock hitts every round. if you get of four and one misses, that's only 150 damage vs 180 with one miss or 146 with two misses. and then five shots with a miss is 200, with the vindicator at 180 to 216. For me, the vindicator also tends to have a better hit ratio, but that's not true for everyone

I still like the Avenger. Use a high-level stability mod and extra ammo capacity, and I can actually see why the Alliance stocks the Avenger as the basic AR.

Mmm... indeed. I just wish I could mod it up bit more, make the girl bit sexier than she already is. To feel that soft recoil against my shoulder, hitting the side of the gun harshly, making the heated thermal clip fall out so you can do it all over again... is divine.

For the same reason some people prefer the .45 ACP over the 9mm or the 7.62 mm NATO over the 5.56 mm NATO. M1911 over the M9 or M14 over the M4/M16. More stopping power and/or reliability.

Well, most weapons today that are being used (even the most powerful) are many many years old. I guess when Shepard god his hands on it cerberus made many copies...

Also: It is really powerful and accurate in ME2, it's only drawback is the lack of ammo. In ME3 it's still really good in SP but not that good in MP because it's been nerfed there. But there are higher versions of it. Dunno how many but it gets stronger for every level.

I use the Revenant in MP, it's still really good. Not at range very much but it's more of a support weapon in range. In close quarters it's the best weapon I've unlocked so far.
Haven't tried the Hornet though, unlocked it yesterday.

I prefer the Mattock over the Avenger. Controlled shots rather than sprayed shots that have reduced accuracy.

@OP

Sometimes old reliable guns are the way to go, AK47 comes to mind. The AK47 was made in the 40s yet it still one of the most popular guns in the world, and is used in many countries military forces, for it's reliability and simple use. Another example would be the HK MP5 which was made in the 60s, but yet it's used constantly all over the world by police organizations and military units.
Just because a gun was made years ago doesn't mean it's a horrible gun and can be easily replaced.

Indeed, though the reasoning behind the Mattock is nothing short of absurd. Its made quite clear in the codex that its an old pre-thermal clip civilian weapon designed largely for hunting and colonial use.

In short, it's Mass Effect's equivalent to a hunting rifle, in comparison to the Vindicator, which is more like a G3 in terms of role.

Does anyone here really take the idea of something like a hunting rifle outperforming a G3 or FAL in military duty seriously?
