Might want to mention you're referencing Gurren Lagann, for people who haven't heard of the show. ;)

Except Anti-Spirals are trying to cut off organic evolution so it doesn't get to the point where a single person could affect the entire universe through sheer willpower.

The Reapers are... doing something else.

Yeah I concur I know what you are referring to but many will not. As an aside they form a similar purpose but my guess is not really.

Well, I have a bit of free time, so I'll explain what the anti-spirals are.

Essentially, they're a race of beings that come to the conclusion that uncontrolled growth/life will eventually consume the resources of the universe/the universe itself. They halt their own growth as a species, cutting themselves off from evolution, and brutally decimate any forms of intelligent life who show the promise of escaping their worlds.

Thats the long and short of it.

If you want to have a reasonable dicussion about the anti-spirals, you kinda have to know what they are, lol.  If you don't want to spoil folks, you shouldn't have brought the subject up in the first place.  XD

The Reapers could be trying to save the universe from something else that we don't know about... but I guess we will have to play Mass Effect 3 to find out.

If this happens, it would be great and it would set up future ME games with an overpowering enemy.

Yes!
This human gets it!

I love the Gurren Lagann theory of the Reapers!
But I think of the Reapers not as the Anti-spirals, but rather the halfmen, trying to keep organic life down and out of notice, until a civilization strong enough rises to defeat the halfmen, proving worthy to challenge the "anti-spirals".

Toppa Gurren Laggan. That anime is epic and a giant robot bigger than a galaxy is always mind blowing.

Pretty much. Gurren Lagann and Mass Effect use essentially the same plot devices.

The anti-spirals are the bigger badder enemy we fight after the Reapers in ME4

actually there is a striking similarity between the reapers and anti-spirals

I wouldn't be surprised if one of the Reapers' reasoning and logic stemmed from them believing that they are protecting the universe

Not exactly but the basic idea is the same. They are not "bad" just misunderstood.

There are some similitudes between them I  think but, IMO, the Reapers are more like "We want to save the civilization's knowledge and history from entropy" than anything else.

Now let's just hope Bioware succeeds in making the ME3 finale as emotional and epic as Gainax did with Gurren Lagann!!
