blergh.. i don't like AMD.. I've always had Intel parts and never had issues with them.

A friend who works in the PC industry recently bought an i5, not sure wich one, he says it performs way better than another friend of ours who's got some i7 in his PC.

There's a huge one close to my house along Highway 75. It's good, but honestly I feel like Microcenter had a better selection. And prices.

Really? Well I'm somewhat alright with missing it then.

But do pick up at store only prices count as online prices? Still a 3 hour drive, though. :P  Yet another reason to miss Las Vegas.

You might be able to make them price match.
Depends on how stupid the person you're talking to is.

Actually, bo, I know we've all been telling you to get a i5-2500K, but there's also the i5-2400. $150 at Microcenter, $190 on Newegg, matches or beats an FX-8150 that's $50 more expensive. So it'll handily beat an i3-2120/FX-4100/Phenom II X4/and so on.

Only real disadvantage is no overclocking with that one.

Fine with me, I didn't intend to overclock anyway, but at $190 it really sounds like it's closer in price to the i5-2500k than the i3-2120.

Don't OC. Just go cheap and simple. All the way, except graphics. The videocard is the most important part. That's where you should spend. Look at the cost of the total package. Intel's i3-2100 series CPUs are really good budget stuff and I'm leaning towards that you don't need more.
I wouldn't say AMD is completely off though. But their interesting stuff is IMO still the old Phenom II X6 and X4, and why not Athlon II X4. Combine with a cheap 870-SB850 mainboard, cheap standard RAM and HD6850/6870/6950/6970 graphics and you have something capable for little money.

Nope. Even OEM versions on sale are likely to run you around $100. Your options are basically that or piracy...not that I'm condoning that.

That's about 80 bucks less than any deal that I can find on the retail version, what's the difference between an OEM version and the retail version?

In functionality, nothing. I think with OEM verions you may not get the benefit of Microsoft customer "support" or whatever, since it's origially software intended for pre-built machines, after all.

So what does that mean, no free software updates?

I need your advice, is this monitor a good deal if I'm looking for a cheap reliable HD model? www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx

No, you still get software updates. Go for the OEM version if you can.

And, that monitor is pretty good. However, if you can, try to get one with an HDMI output.

Actually, bo, if you're in college, check to see if your college sells Windows 7. i can get it for about $50 through college.

Are you serious? All I could find was upgrades.  I'm building this from scratch so I have no OEM license to upgrade from.

I'm completely serious. I can get a complete version of Windows 7 for like $50.

Check your college. MS is pretty altruistic when it comes to students.

anyway, I don't want to drive to california to pick up that monitor you recommended, but it's only $10 extra at newegg, so no biggie.
