Almost everyone picks the central location, including me recently.  This enables you to see a lot of the battlefield, but it also leaves you to be attacked from 3 sides.  Which is bad, particularly if no one is watching the direction the Phantoms come from - and since everyone is likely fighting in different directions, there's a tendency to get split off as you focus on your own battle.

When I stepped up to Gold, the random group I was with instead chose to defend here - to the left as you spawn into the game

And it worked brilliantly.  Most everything comes in the front, as you're looking in the screenshot, a few things come from the left but the bit of cover my Asari is in in the picture gives me protection from that.  The guys who wanted to be up close to the enemy can use the cover in front while the more long ranged/squishier guys can operate in comparative safety where my Asari is.

Anyone have any better places to pick?

Best spot is in the stairway, inside the building. You can easily control the two exits.

Go down in to that room away from the central location which has the stairs going down (where there's ammo) and the stairs going up as the only ways in, and you'll be set. Camped there for every single wave on gold with three other mates, only moving when we had an objective that required us to do so.

I agree with Arppis, you can hold off anything at that stairway unless you mess things up terribly.

Doesn't mean your idea isn't good though, going to try that next time I play. :)

Yeah, the stairway is best to me too. You can have two at the top on the outside (near the ladder) who can retreat to the inside when need be and two at the bottom near the ammo case. Really, I like to hold the bottom by myself. As an Asari Adept my biotic explosions kill everything in that tight little space and that's more people who can shoot/snipe from the top. I've never tried where the OP is talking about, but will give it a shot.

I have the worst luck with grenades when defending that room:? I have found that the area the OP states is a good spot though

If you're going to turtle up, the U-shaped stairwell is the place to do it. The spot your Gold group defended gives you good sniping sight lines but leaves half the team vulnerable to getting flanked from the left. If someone takes ownership of that side it can work out, but unless you're willing to commit to that yourself I wouldn't bet on that happening with randoms.

The catch with the stairwell is that an Atlas can become a problem if people don't have optimal builds or won't pull out the missile launcher.

I usually take up position in the doorway next to the ammo dump in the lower hallway to block off any flanking attempts (which still gives me room to fall back up the stairs in case I get swarmed without giving them line of fire on my team) leaving the rest of the team to the whole "defend the ladder" thing most people got going.

Works great as both Soldier/AR and Engineer/Shotgn with maxed turret

that and if someone goes down, enemies love to just flood in both sides

I always get pretty swarmed from the 5 directions in that spot. Granted it seems like L-shaped, but there are multiple ways enemies can come from the forward direction.

But hey, what works for you, works for you! :)

I don't really like how cramped the staircase can be, while the spot in the OP felt like it gave me some security.

Of course, it could just have been that the group I was with was very good.

that and enemies have a habit of spawning in that middle section if you have two guys up top and two guys at bottom... I've been killed so many times running up to help the team above me, that i run head first into either a nice big group of soldiers, phantoms or an Atlas

Yeah, if you're going to defend the stairwell you can't afford to spread out too much due to the risk of enemy spawns. One team halfway down the stairs guarding the top door and one team at the bottom next to the ammo box seems to work out best.

If a mook lobs a grenade in, you just abandon your post until it detonates.  That's usually only a problem at the top door, and it's one reason that a Human Engineer is really handy for crowd control there.

Two at the bottom of the bottom stairs, two at the top of the top stairs. Ample cover and each team is only getting attacked from one direction. Couldn't possibly be better.

That works fine as long as you don't have people up top that need to run down to the ammo box regularly.  If you're just toting a Carnifex, you'll have problems up there.
