As a new member to the old-school party-based rpg, I am a little confused as to what exactly the Combat tactics skill does for the pc/companions. I believe the skill increase the amount of actions the character can perform, but how much of an increase does CT actually provide?
Basically, is Combat Tactics worth investing in? Isn't (I thought I read somewhere the default number of scripts is 5) enough actions for a character? I have no idea how these mechanics work, and would appreciate any answers regarding this topic.
Combat Tactics?

It increases the number of conditional commands you can implement. It's worth it on characters you want to have diverse tactics without commanding them personally. Which is why Mages get one rank by default.
I hope it also includes dialogue options. That'd be neat.

I think it depends on how much you are willing to micro-manage the NPCs. I don't know much about the mechanics, either, but I am usually one to micro-manage my actors, so I don't think I'll be interested.
Of course, after playing the game, I may change my mind.

Although it's nice to be able to change tactics depending on whether I'm being attacked by a magical attack, I'd prefer to be able to react to different spells in different ways. i.e. use "dispel magic" on relevant person when I have a "death magic" on "party member INCLUDING self".

this thread hadn't moved in nearly a month. Just throw some dirt on it and call it dead, eh?

I hate when people whine about thread necroing. Hey, why not just start lots of new threads about the same thing, eh?
