"There's been a huge amount of back and forth about the "From the
Ashes" DLC, and many have dismissed it as a case of, "If you don't want
it, don't buy it, boycotting the game entirely is pointless."I
don't want to be melodramatic here but the consequences of Bioware's
move from cosmetic/unpaid DLC for new retail copies to day one paid DLC
which includes a highly lore-relevant character, will have a much
greater effect than those who are apathetic seem to realize.Yes,
the loss of 5,000 or so pre-orders (if that), is not going to be a major
dent in Bioware's wallet. But beyond the short term fiscal loss, this
loss of faith in the Bioware name will, potentially, have much have more
grievous implications. The fact is Bioware are dragging their name as a
developer of quality products through the mud. Bioware used to be a
name synonymous with outstanding, original RPG design and story telling.
Look back on the announcement of Mass Effect and Dragon age following
the success of Jade Empire and Kotor. The hype for a new Bioware RPG was
enormous while the game was still a faceless concept.Any IP they
choose to develop for EA in the future will not be met with excitement
but by apprehension. Thoughts of "what will they come up with next?"
will be replaced with "what will they charge us for next?".Hype
is not generated by the masses, it is primarily generated by word of
mouth through the hardcore gaming faithful and grows from there to the
general public. The fact that core gamers are willing to boycott the
final chapter to one of the greatest gaming trilogies of the current
gaming generation is a blow to Bioware's very foundation. You can
pump as much marketing as you like into a game, if the core gamers lose
faith in a developer, then their products will not have the hype they
need to be truly successful. This is not just about Mass Effect 3 sales,
it is about Bioware as an gaming brand. They crossed the line for
acceptable DLC/pre-order/used sales prevention practices and in doing so
have lost their marketability as a brand name. For those of you
who think the DLC itself is entirely acceptable, you are quite frankly
indirectly killing this industry. Bioware have tried to claim that this
DLC was developed by a separate team after the main product went into
certification. Make no mistake, in order to accommodate such
lore-relevant content the main product would have to be adjusted to accommodate any developments to the story the DLC might make. This was a
day one decision by Bioware and EA to have a paid DLC for launch.
Resources that could have been spent integrating said content into the
retail product were instead specifically designated to milk the consumer
for more money. This is a critical moment for the gaming
industry. If we, as gamers, purchase this DLC we are sending a message
to EA and publishers like them that there is a market for day one DLC
that is critical to story development, that could have been easily
included in the retail product. If you aren't boycotting ME3 itself,
then I implore you do not allow this **** money making ploy to be become
the norm for future releases. If you do you are effectively increasing
the RRP of all future blockbuster games by $10 by making day one, game
changing, paid DLC an acceptable practice. Have some sense and show some
restraint, it will pay off in the long run."
