isnt that just a husk?

It's one of the statues (or at least a husky variation) from ilos.

Image IPB

Identical to how the protheans were portrayed in the ME1 beacons.

Image IPB

It's simple. Bioware retconned their appearance.

I always assumed the prothean statues on Ilos were figures from prothean mythology. Gods, guardian spirits, etc...

Collectors are heavily modified Protheans, which is why they look different. The collector general was even more heavily modified to withstand Harbinger's possession tech.

I'ts definetely a retcon. The "new" prothean look is based on the collectors, which were designed for ME2.
I have the ME2 art book and it says " The collectors were originally inspired by electrons microscope photographs of insect heads", it doesn't say anything about protheans and their look in ME1.
And since in ME2 they said the collectors were modifed protheans, it only makes sense now to design the protheans based on the collectors.
Also as mentioned before, in the visions, the protheans looked like this. but then in ME2 they changed them in the visions as well. A small screw up in the lore, but I'm ok with that :wizard:

Err, not really.

The collectors were protheans, but heavily modified. So naturally one would assume that the prothean would looks like ... a prothean before they were heavily modified.

The ME2 visions have the cthulhu people then at the end a collector. At the time it was most definitely to drive home the fact the protheans were turned into collectors.

I don't think the statues are prothean. The collectors are genetically altered Protheans, and the Prothean below it is an original Prothean.

I never saw that that first pic was a prothean, I thought it was a husked out prothean...or some kind of art or something. Ugh either way. I wouldn't be able to have that terror on my team Dx

Regardless of what any troll says to the contrary; its staggeringly clear in ME1 that the Cthulhu-faced statues on Ilos were meant to be protheans.

Why?

The Visions. Those charming slideshows we had through out the first game, that even appeared in ME2's one vision, where we specifically see an Ilos statue look-a-like turned into a Collector. There's even Genesis, where we clearly see another Ilos Statue head in the upper right corner of one of the frames.

If they weren't Protheans, why the hell would they be in the visions? Why in hell would they be everywhere when visually referring to the Protheans? They wouldn't be, Bioware wanted Prothy to be a "Badass," and so went with a retconned-to-hell-Soldier-Bug appearance instead of one that actually made sense.

I'll love to see what happens with the Visions are back in ME3.

EDIT: Ninja'd, but what we said is true.

My point was that the collectors design was only created in ME2 and therefore, in ME2 the collectors being heavilly modified protheans, it only made sense to make a prothean similar to a collector, as you said.
But in ME1, Bioware didn't had a design for a prothean, only the statues and the ones in the visions, which we can not assume for certain that were really protheans.
Sorry, I din't remember the vision in ME2 still showed the "cthulhu people", but it makes sense to show them in the end turned into collectores.

Well, I can throw a stupid theory out there.... perhaps the new prothean squad mate was being converted into a collector and somehow was preserved?!

Remember Batarians before "Bring Down the Sky"? If not, here is a remainder:

They changed their mainds about how they would look. Myself I was a little dissapointed of how they (Protheans) look now but it's not a big deal.

I can explain why they dont look like the statues, theres actually couple of reasons given by Javik the Prothean himself, the other one is more logical given the visions. If you wanna know PM me.

For an extremely broad definition of the word "identical"...

Never mind that the visions themselves are not internally consistent as to the sort of beings that are depicted.

Bah, I have the script myself, and his "Reason," doesn't give reason why a *Certain* Prothean should or shouldn't look like the Statues. If anything, it supports it, considering what Ilos was and what they were woriking on, and who was in charge of such technology.

Its fairly obvious that in ME1, the Protheans were tentacle faced, lanky, and bald. It probably wasn;t until ME3's production that they decided to go cpmpletely insane and make "Javrik," a Collector look-a-like. The quotes are there because, to my knowlege, that name was only mentioned once, in a speperate draft of the script, the same draft that had the Engineer's powers the same as a Vanguards.
