Humans has made statues of dragons, great beasts, gods, Cthulhu esc monsters. You're questioning another species ability to depict something other than themselves? Ohhh btw those where the original inhabitants of Ilos, not the original prothean species.

The statues? Maybe... but the visions show the same creature, and the vision is an emergency video of protheans dying.

The statues could have been representations of their gods. If the message showed gods being slain by these reapers, then the protheans may have gotten the point that these things mean business.

They could also be the cast of a sci-fi movie with lots of make up, but when they were filming, the reapers killed them all. It can be anything if we take that logic.

Which are part of the retcon, those statues are of the race before the Protheans.

Sheeit, I wanna know who those guys are.

Inusannon.

This is a huskified Inusannon (sic I believe). I'm guessing it could be explained that the image is simply a CGI re-creation of what current species assume that the statues (heavily damaged over time) looked like (sort of like how we assumed dinosaurs were reptilians, only to find out they may have had feathers and looked more like birds), only huskified.  You can still see that the husk in this picture has some of its original facial tentacles, like the statues, underneath those tubes going into its mouth. It's very plausible to think, since they hadn't known before, that the statues were statues of Protheans, rather than of a race that lived on Ilos long before.

There one problem with this explanation, just a tiny little thing. The beacon vision, that shows the same things. And the vision is a warning of the protheans being invaded by reapers, so why is there inusannon in prothean beacon visions?

*Spoilers*

Theres another explanation given by Javik, that is more logical. These beings are protheans, but they are not the original protheans. Javik belongs to the race that was the original protheans, the dominant ones, the conquerors.

*Conitinuing Spoilers*

Exactly, that's what I meant about his DNA; its safe to assume that the Statues in ME1 were the original Protheans, because of their dominance in the galaxy, they were probably the ones responible for sending the distress beacons; and considering how... Brutal they were, I doubt the True Race would have allowed an assimilated race to handle things like the Conduit; because that kind of technology couldeasily allow the subjegated races to rebel.

Regardless; Ilos was never attacked by the Reapers, so its logical to say that the visions were not transmitted from there; which means that the same tentacle-species sent them, which makes the idea that they were not the True Race, seem like a very, very, very convient and ridiculous coincidence.

Who says they werent there supervising the construction of the Mass Relay Replica?

I still think youre right, the loophole given by Javik isnt a very stable one....

Considering it's a mismatched vision that came from a half-broken beacon, I'd say there's a decent amount of room for speculation.

Is just like the remaked vision in ME2, they show the previous video and they add a collector at the end. How in the name of **** do Protheans know how a collector looks like if Mordin said that it took thousands of years of cloning, and things replaced by tech.

In all seriousness, I support either the statues being of Prothean revered/mythical creatures - or just some weird drunk Prothean making "abstract art" - or perhaps the Protheans had incorporated other species into their galactic empire. This second theory is a bit questionable, as Protheans are known to have had an empire, yet they're described as a single race.

Javik: So tell me about this vision you've had.
Shep: It's not really clear.
Javik: Let me see (pulls spockesc mind meld)
Shep: So?
Javik: That was the trailer for Ilos Slashers V.....

Maybe they were, maybe they weren't; it doesn't change what I said about the transmission not being from Ilos, and how much of a stretch it is to assume that the same species (That *weren't* true protheans.) conveniently sent it.

It also doesn't change the fact that the Statue-People have had an overwhelming presence throughout the series when concerning the Protheans, and were arguable obviously the True Race prior to ME3.

It's a vision, at some point it went through the brain. Since it was such a sudden and violent hallucination, the brain may have crossed a few wires.

I think some devs should come in here and explain this prothean look debacle... Ive given you my 2 cents, thats all I can give you.

I doubt they will however, they are always in their ivory towers, rarely do you get comment for things like this, especially the screw ups. Unless we make this a 400 + page thread like the Deception one, demanding an explanation. ;)

That's not really an option, considering Shepard obtains the Cipher, which effectively makes his brain like a Prothean's, and the visions remain the same, hell, their detail becomes clearer. Don't forget that the beacon's were made for a "Prothean mind."

Which actually makes my point even stronger: "A Prothean Mind," so what? The True Race? Or are we seriously going to say that every one of the new races underwent "Cipher Surgery," or something to use the Beacons without side-effects? It just shows once again that the Statue people were the Real Protheans, and that in ME1, they were a single race.

Yeah, but my example was with Mordin, even if they didn't look like the squid face alien, how did they knew how a Collector looks like? And the picture looks pretty clear, that gives enough room to think that it wasn't a "fill".

Hm. Well, if there are statues of the first picture then it's likely the protheans may have found information from prior civilizations similar to the prothean beacon, but misinterpreted it. So they saw the husks as gods or perhaps just a good art subject, rather than a threat.

If it was just an image from the beacon then it's again probably still a husk. The image of which was sent through the beacon as a warning to beware the things trying to GNAW YOUR FACE OFF.

They didn't, you did. Your mind could have slipped it in there by accident.

@BentOrgy
New races could have evolved so that certain mental triggers were never activated. The cipher could have just turned on these triggers allowing for higher mental ability (or at least a subroutine that allows understanding of the protheans)
