I say this on the fact that it's proven they are not protheans ("prothy" is proof). The reapers Indoctrination turns people to work for the reapers (possibly insane?). The tenticle faced statue's on Ilos resemble a very popular mythos. Cthulhu. In the mythos Cthulhu was a tenticle faced alien/monster which presence drove people insane and to worship him. Could mass effect be trying to parody their own story off this? A lot of video games have. Your thoughts?

Very interesting. I hadn't thought of this before. I guess it's possible. I think this game will have quite a few unexpected twists despite all of the spoilers that have made it out.

It's a good idea and not to ****** on your parade but there's a couple of things wrong with that. A: The reapers typically share similar body aspects of the races they believed strongest (I.E. human reaper at the end of ME2). B: Cthulhu wasn't/isn't worshiped the same way that many gods of myth and legend have been, he's more of a character of fiction and narrative then an actual proposed god. C: Typically you don't want to reference other peoples works, playing homage is a different story all together and the reapers are more Cthulhu -like is a nice little way to do so rather then flat out say 'They're Cthulhu, the Elder God of Madness"

I just assumed since the statues are pre-prothean that some civilization before them built the statues of the husks of their own kind, possibly a memorial before they themselves died, or a warning to any civilizations that would come after them.
