I switched characters and of course got the "empty bars" bug. As a Vanguard, it pretty much means your weak especially on the silver difficulty.

My friend who also played a vanguard fell through the wall and soon my entire team was killed. Which forced me to start killing turrets but going into the power wheel and casting Charge and Nova manually.

Low and behold: If you cast Nova from your wheel, you don't lose any shields.

So for the remaining targets, I just charged into them and spammed the hell out of Nova.
