Probably because we know they weren't speaking the languages that exist today, and accents are shaped by languages.

And, lets be honest here - you think Africa hasn't had a chaotic history of conquest?

Is this known for sure? Or something, cuz there are at least a couple thousand languages in Africa. There are a lot of very confident broad statements around here

And compared to Africa, for its size the UK has had some pretty crazy times, but yea, Africa has had it's own trouble

This thread got dumb fast...as someone pointed out earlier, it isn't the accent itself that [most] people have an issue with, it is that if any species in the game needed to sound alien it was the protheans.

I still don't understand this line of reasoning. Why should the protheans sound any more "alien" than anyone else? Even ancient people are still people, they're not gods. The Reapers are far more advanced and detached from organic life but they still sound "normal" by our standards.

Its because these people place far too much importance on the Protheans.

They are also assuming (for reasons I dont understand) that all Protheans had the same accent. They base this on the well known ScienceFact that while humans can have a wide range of accents, each alien species only gets one.

First off... I don't appreciate being refered to as "these people" in a thread full of accusations of rascism.

Secondly, if the protheans were like any other species in the game (Yahg aside) that you could go about interacting with at your leisure than there wouldn't be a problem, Prothy is the only living breathing prothean (Presumably) that we get to interact with in the entire series (thus far) so forgive us if we were expecting something a bit different.

Jesus like 3/4 of this site can't distinguise accents from each other. Its a Eastern African accent more specifcaly a Nigerian accent. North africans are an Arabic like people and most speak arabic so they would have arabic sounding accents.

ALSO THIS.

A THOUSAND TIMES THIS.

THERE IS NOTHING JAMACIAN ABOUT THAT ACCENT.

So since he's the last one, he has to sound super special? I dont really understand why, but whatever.

That still doesn't mean he has to sound like Lovecraftian horror or whatever. It's fine if you were expecting something more fancy, I can't tell you what to think, but that doesn't make it any less illogical.

Because it's a video game and a work of fiction, "The last surviving" anything is always something special

The Last Akkadian- The Rock, need I say more?
The Last Martian- Martian Manhunter
The Last Wayne- Batman
The Last Jedi- Luke Skywalker

It may not make sense in a logical manner, but it has come to be expected.

EDIT: Luke Skywalker wasn't really epic so I admit that wasn't a good example.

Luke also wasnt really the last Jedi either, but now I'm just nitpicking.

I think Prothy sounds awesome.

I don't quite get some of the complains about his voice. No one ever complained about Tali having Eastern European accent. So why is it a problem if the Prothean squadmate sounds African?

The prevailing theory is that Protheans influenced early human life. Early human life was in Africa. From what I gather, Protheans in this case don't speak with an African accent, Africans speak with Prothean accents.

As someone who does actual work in Sociolinguistics and language change, I can say with authority that this is 100% improbable in every way, even if the first sentence were true.

No, it's not an african accent.

It's simple. Africans just inherited the Prothean's accents.

Vigil sounded like it had been sedated.  Which was fine for a VI, but not so good for a living, breathing creature with actual emotions.
