I really don't care if it's Afrikaans, Jamaican or Arab.. The point I was making is that his voice does not match the rest of his aesthestics.

Where did I say that African was a language? Learn to read.

You didn't make a distinction between the many different African languages. Some African languages may have better fit the Prothean character than the one they used. You're being overly dramatic and I promise you, if he had an Austrian accent I would laugh about it just the same.

Exactly, his voice just calls too much attention to itself breaking game immersion...to me at least (might be different in context since I've only heard the voice). Voice really does matter to me and is one of the reason why I never had Zaeed in my squad aside from his loyalty mission. It really does throw me off.

Do you realize Afrikaans is a dialect of Dutch, spoken by the white descendants of Dutch voortrekkers (Boers)?

Your ignorance is astounding

It's sad when you see people saying stereotypes because of this.

If you're black then apparently you smoke weed just because you were born black it seems.

Some people are like that.

Anyway, I think the main problem is that we who live in western culture generally have a baggage when it comes to how we associate to things associated with the African continent and its civilisations. This makes an clearly distinguishable "African" accent an surprising choice, as it does not denote "ancient High-tech" to most people.
If Bioware wants to challenge players preconceptions, they have played this right, but I still think that it would have been best using a unidentifiable strange accent and a more "inhuman" voice to signify its extraordinary alien origin.

I really dont get how you can be a fan of sci-fi and be a bigot, i mean seriously the ME series is about space exploration meeting different species and lifeforms and people are still tied down to there own social misconceptions about accents and race ? get a grip ..

I understand the mystery and significance behind the Protheans, and how that's kinda been a recurring thing in ME, and how most of the galaxy still believes it (even if it turned out they didn't actually invent all that stuff), but how are the Protheans any more alien than any other currently living species? Like, biologically or otherwise. We're all out here in the galaxy, using reaper technology, like they were. Yea, they may have invented some neat stuff themselves, but...  I dunno, I'm pretty sure I know what you mean, but I don't think that's a good reason to give them a very expected and unoriginal voice. I just picture them living their lives the same way all species do in present-day ME, nothing exceptionally alien about them, or anything

From an earlier cycle and not part of the current galactic "culture".

I'll admit I was a bit surprised to hear the voice. Maybe I've been watching too much British television lately, but I was sort of expecting a sort of stiff upper lip accent myself. On the other hand, I think it's pretty cool actually. And keep in mind that this is one individual Prothean, so to say that "all" Protheans would have spoken similarly is stretching things a bit I think.

Yea but I'm saying it makes no difference, they evolved uniquely and grew and then used reaper technology and probably lived their lives like all the species we see today. I mean, like, each individual species today is very likely just as alien to each other as the protheans would be to any one of them. With our translators, we can understand each other, and we'll work together in workplaces on hub worlds, but I'd say different species are still pretty unique. We're just all sapient and civilized...  that's what we have in common, sort of

It's not a dialect but the daughter language of Dutch.

Okay, let me type it out so you can understand it.

The... PROTHEANS.. VOICE... Does.. Not.. Match.. His.. Aesthetics. I really do not care about the rest of the dribble you are posting.

It has little to do with "High Tech." The Protheans aesthetics are based on Japanese Culture, more specifically Samurai. His voice does not fit well with this. Any voice can work fine in a "High Tech" Society, it's just a miss match of voice w/ aesthetics. This is my point, I really don't care about the origin of his voice at all. It just simply does not match the rest of him.

Its both a trick used in storytelling as well as for logical reasons.

The trick is about communicating something specific with the audience/player (in this case delivering on the expectations associated with how the protheans has been presented so far, its very much about playing with cultural archetypes).

The logical reasons are potentially many but the most obvious one is that in a classroom where there previously only have been latin and english people, a living Atlantian will be sticking out. And until the translation has been perfected (or he/she/it has learned to speak some contemporary language) it will no doubt sound strange and alien.  The second potential logical reason would be if the reapers have had a hand in designing the evolution of the species of each cycle (this time we will breed for these evolutionary qualities), or if evolution for some reason "naturally" changes with the passing of time in the universe.

Let me guess, bucause it makes you think of a zulu warrior outside a clay hut or something similar. Right?

*edit

I saw you post regarding the samurai aesthetics. Good that you clarified. But giving the protheans a japanese accent would not be good either, because then they would become too "japanese"  and not unique enough in their own right.

I think the voice they used for Vigil would have fit a lot better. Why such a drastic change?

Well it would have been a nice not to continuity to have made it similar at least. But remember that it was translated by vigil.

Because all protheans speak the same language/dialect, just like all humans speak the same language/dialect. It's entirely possible that the creators of Vigil spoke a different prothean language than Javik.

Did anyone get angry that the quarians had different accents from Tali?

Heard this song while playing San Andreas this weekend and immediately thought of Prothy and I couldn't stop laughing at how ridiculous prothy's voice is... I thought I'd share it. The dude even makes Alien noises.

I personally think the voice suits how he looks to a tee.

I get a rugged, deserty feel from him and the voice.

And due to my first world upbringing, I stereotypically associate Africa with those characteristics.
