I was hoping it would sound unfamiliar, alien. Instead, it appears the Protheans are from Jamaica...or is it Africa? Damn all that subtlety. At any rate Bioware, you really know how to f*ck things up.
I wonder how you know how aliens sound like

The Prothean's voice does strike me as a little discordant. For some reason the Prothean's voice reminds me of Jar Jar Binks. Perhaps this is more of a problem with me and not character itself -- after all, I've heard few people make this connection.
I think its about time I say this: I have no problem with Jar Jar Binks.
Bring it on.

Me neither. And I never got the hate either, I thought he was a pretty solid character. Silly, but definitely solid. Especially by the end of the film. In fact, the whole prequel trilogy just seems like George Lucas is saying: "You guys are taking this way too seriously."

I find the African accent very fitting. Since, y'know, it's technically the birthplace of humanity. I guess that's the parallel they we're going for. Either way, sounds cool.
You read that on a top-rated youtube comment, didn't you?

Agreed; we had two samples of Prothean voices in ME1; That recording, and Vigil.

Bioware designed the game, the story (debateable) and so they can do what they like. I think that the voice is good. Not great, but good. It is likely to go with his character in the game, which I believe to be pretty obnoxious and stern. He endured the extinction of his own race and will be pretty frustrated our generation of races make the same mistakes as his. I think he will make a great partner with Shep as they will likely compliment eachother.

So if all of a sudden Reapers wore frilly hats and invited the Council for tea, you'd be okay with that?

I laughed and thought it was a joke, but now I actually kind of dig it. I still dont get why Bioware thought Protheans should sound African, its a very odd choice. I wish they had like Djimon Hounsou voice him if they wanted an African voice. I love the sound of that guy's voice. I know he'd be very expensive to hire, and especially for DLC, but I think his voice, and our familiarity with it, would nullify the comedic effect.
The prevailing theory is that Protheans influenced early human life. Early human life was in Africa. From what I gather, Protheans in this case don't speak with an African accent, Africans speak with Prothean accents.
And OMG yes! Djimon is AMAZING. He would probably be too pricey though. A lot of their budget is already eaten up by Sheen, Prinze, Strahovski, etc.
Give it a rest, it doesn't make sense for the simple reason that the "african accent" is only noticable when they speak English, otherwise it is just AFRICAN language, not an ACCENT.
The problem here is that they are using a highly recognizable accent.
It makes the character earth bound and a caricature. Same thing would happen if he had a thick Scottish accent or Swedish accent or Texan "Ya'll hear now" accent.
It only envokes images and EARTHLY feelings.
I picture an AFRICAN, not a Prothean when I hear AFRICAN accents, a kind of "DUH" moment.
All the voices should have flat non-specific English voices and then have them "changed/modulated".
As in Legion, Thane etc.
Also the Protheans were gone 50,000 years ago (well not this one cause he grew up in NIGERIA, apparently).
So they should sound very alien.
It would be so much cooler and fitting.
I shouldn't think of Mandela, Desmond Tutu etc when hearing a Prothean speak, Makes me think there is an AFRICAN behind a halloween/moive mask when you see him.

I remember a developer once saying that Bioware was having trouble thinking up ways to add more Drell to Mass Effect without them all sounding the same or something like that.
EDIT: WOAH, no way should the Protheans sound like Vigil or that other Prothean from ME 1...way too cliched in my opinion.
That Prothean saying 'all hope is lost' is way too cliched, it pretty much screams out 'I AM A MYSTICAL WISE PERSON FROM THE PAST, I SOUND LIKE SOMEONE FROM A SHAKESPEARE PLAY'
Vigil isn't so bad but it sounds way too much like a mix between a stereotypical/cliched wise person and a robot/AI.

Why?
Not every human has the same accent, so why should the Protheans? In fact considering they were a galaxy spanning civilization that had colonial populations settled on other worlds for hundreds or even thousands of years, they should have even more regional accents than humanity does currently.

And not to spoil anything, but maybe not all Protheans sound the same. If you have the From Ashes DLC, you will know what I mean. And logically, they did have a vast galaxy-spanning empire that lasted thousands of years, so it stands to reason that different accents could exist.
