I think what bothers me most is that such an advanced civilization shouldn't have a thick African accent......

"An advanced alien sounds like a black man? Well thats just silly! Maybe a race of brutes like the krogan could sound black, but never an advanced alien race!"

Lets play teh race card yet again shall we?

I fail to see anything other than racial implications in saying an advanced alien species shouldnt sound african, but that it'd be ok for a brute race like the krogan.

That's because you're projecting your racism.  I don't like the voice because it sounds like Jacob's voice actor trying to be jamaican.

Maybe it's my fault for expecting an alien race from 50,000 years ago to sound something.....alien and not one of my crew members.

Cause Jacob sounds so "black" to begin with right?

Just calling it Jamaican is racist. All black people accents are the same right?

He is one of your crew members.

Yeah, and I want him to sound not like one that's human and already exists on my ship.

Are you seriously trying to say Prothy and Jacob sound anything alike?

Precisely. How do we 'project our own racism' from comments like these?

So why is this not a problem for the other aliens?  'Cause other than a bit of processing, they all sound pretty damn human too.

Guys, I imagine that if we heard ANY alien voices without context as to who they are, we'd think they were ridiculous.

I mean, think about Garrus. There's nothing alien about that voice.

When's the last time a Krogan sounded like anything but a deep-voiced man?

The only ones who sound vaguely alien are Drell and Hanar. Volus and Quarians are just wearing masks, and Elcor just don't use emotion.

I think that, SEEING this character speak with this voice is going to be the ultimate test.

So I guess most people would'nt complain if Prothy's voice sounded North American or European?

Thats been done waaaay too often. This is new and fresh, and the main reason some people hate it is because Prothy sounds African.

The reason people hate it is because it doesn't sound alien at all.  Nice job trying to inject racism into your argument.

Neither does Tali, or Liara, or Kirrahe, or Wrex, or any alien on the council, or any volus.

But no one complained then. In fact no one has complained FOR TWO GAMES that none of the acents sounded alien enough, but now that there's an african voice bsn is up in arms.

Please be so kind as to asign specific ethnic accents to the characters you just listed.

Liara, Wrex, Kirrahe and Volus don't have ethnic acents but clearly speak with a Western Hemisphere english vocabulary. And that's my point, they don't sound "alien" but no one complained.

Tali, and many other Quarians sound Romanian, but again, no one ever complained about that.

Enter Prothean with a "blackcent" and people are off the walls.

Is it that hard to believe people dislike a voice on it's own merit and has nothing to do with race of the voice actor? Nope. It HAS to be because of that because that's the only thing I see that someone could dislike!

Stop projecting.

While the voice doesn't really suit his looks, I like it. It makes me wonder about a few things story related, speculation of course. The first humans are believed to come from around Africa. Protheans have ruins on Mars which is just a stepping stone away from Earth. So it makes me curious if the Protheans meddled with the earliest forms of man. So, it'd be like, the Prothean doesn't sounds Kenyan, but rather, ancient humans sounded Prothean in their accents.

I think you're bang on the money here!

That would actually be amazing if you're right!

They still sound North American, no matter how you approach it. Processing doesn't eliminate accent.

If any alien species needed to sound other worldly, it was the Protheans. They haven't had contact with other species for so long. Then I heard the voice and they might as well have given them an Irish accent, or a New Jersey accent. Now I can't even listen to the voice and take it seriously because it's so familiar.

My original point about race came because someone said he thought an african voice sounded too primitive for an advanced alien race. That is less 'I dont like the actor' and more 'advanced africans? surely you jest'.

If you dislike the voice solely because of the actor and not because it sounds african, I am fine with that.

Look at the reasoning from the post that we objected to earlier:

Yeah same here, I hate it.  I think what bothers me most is that such an advanced civilization shouldn't have a thick African accent......It makes sense if some Krogan sound like that, but not Prothean.  I know some people here probably think something like "BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER CUZ IT'S ANOTHER SPECIES!1!!!11!  Durrr herp derp"

Why would an African accent not fit an advanced civilization, but rather krogan (who have a reputation in the galaxy as being 'brutish')?

"No, I'm not racist, YOU ARE" is what this thread has become.

I don't think anyone here is racist. I think the reaction would be the same if it were a thick Latino accent, or Russian, or actually Jamaican. While BSN may be capable of many things, I'm certain petty, centuries-old prejudices isn't one of them.

I just think people are complaining about something that's been with Mass Effect from the start.

Jesus like 3/4 of this site can't distinguise accents from each other. Its a Eastern African accent more specifcaly a Nigerian accent. North africans are an Arabic like people and most speak arabic so they would have arabic sounding accents.

Dude Nigeria it's on West Africa... and if you ask me, they have a lot more in common with northafrican dudes rather than Eastern dudes like somalians or ethiopians.

Yeah i actually meant that i mixed it up but still its not a north african accent.

It sounds like Jacob to me; and I've asked if he is actually the voice actor behind this character and if he is, on that alone makes me dislike it.  I do not like the same actor doing different voices or attempting to alter his voice when it is clearly the same person.

I find it highly amusing that so many people in this thread think they can label people racist and end the conversation.

You can call me racist but it won't change my opinion and it won't stop me from disliking the voice.  I don't like the voice because, to me, it doesn't fit; and it also like the same va as Jacob.  I don't care if the VA is african or if the voice is, it has nothing to do with it. People need to get past it.

No idea where "africans can't/why can't africans be advanced" argument came from or why it even is relevant.
