Yeah, the prothean doesn't sound anything like Jacob unless you think all black people sound the same.
I mean, just because the prothean has a nice jump shot doesn't mean he's Jacob.
See this is racism. Nice association based on race.
You guys are the ones saying this, repeating it doesn't make it true. His endings on words sound like Jacob's voice. Sorry if someone having a differing opinion rustles your jimmies.
But that was actually quite funny. And if I'm not mistaken since it was positive, psycholically speaking, it was a generalization based on race rather than a stereotype. But I'll save that for the classroom.
Racism is racism; it just goes to should how disillusioned you are if you think there are acceptable levels of racism or if it's funny then it makes it okay.
Looks like the guy who was called racist shows how racist you guys actually are.

No, it's still racism.
I never said it wasn't, but your right.
I got a good lol out of it and went on my way. The reason behind all this "white knighting" in a video game forum is beyond me, however. "lol and gtfo" is all I'm sayin'.
Edit: Niddy, just get over it. We all know you're the moral bad-ass here, we all aspire to be like you one day. Put it past everyone and get on.

The point here is that the Protheans are extinct, they haven't socialized with other citadel species. Hence it doesn't feel as awkward with garrus, Liara, and the rest. They have put some slight accents on them like the Quarians etc. Thane and the Drell have their sound, so does Legion etc.
But protheans are SO much more Alien in comparison, they are a Mystery, that lived during another time when none of the CURRENT Citadel Species lived and mingled together.
So this is why I personally think he should (if speaking English at all) should have a flat accent that doesn't sound neither here nor there, and it should be heavily modulated to sound "Alien". Hell I would prefer click sounds and weird noises to English at all.
So hearing an African accent, just comes off as WAY to down to earth, same as is he had Spanish accent, British or Russian or Asian.
Honestly it just doesn't sit right, would anyone think it would sound correct with an "indian accent from India"?
What I mean is that when we hear accents we picture the area and the people. When I hear Russian accents I picture Russians, same for a Texan accent from USA, or deep south Alabama. Images spring to mind and yes, at times that DOES include stereotypes.
I always wondered why Quarians have to sound eastern European or almost middle eastern. They are NOT EARTHLINGS.
The "thicker" the accent the more noticable it is. This is because when we hear English we expect English, Just as me being an original Swede, and I hear and English person speaking Swedish, it is noticable to me, but not when I hear fellow Swedes.
So when hearing prothy speak with an African accent, I Picture an African man, it really is that simple and then that image clashes with the prothean look and how they are MORE Alien to ALL Citadel Species than any other. Cause they are EXTINCT.
it's not about racism, it's about "fitting in", people talk about racism cause it's in their OWN HEADS they think "others think Africans are as advanced". But it has NOTHING to do with it, I would frankly be more bothered hearing a Texan accent, then it would be comical. I would picture prothy in a Cowboy hat and cowboy boots.
not a single alien in the game really sounds alien. Hanar have a little bit of reverb going on but really that's about it. Why shouldn't Bioware add an accent to the Prothean.
there's a slight mix of accents already but not a great deal. Maybe their thoughts were to add an accent that would be different, not one heard on a general day to day basis by (possibly) the majority of people. I don't know about everyone else but I could go weeks without hearing a broad North African accent where I live. In fact the only time I hear different accents is because I work for a company with clients all around the world. If I worked in my local supermarket everyone would sound like Nigel Fish'n'chips.
Obviously, this only relates to me, I may be well off the mark and I am in no way wanting to start a debate on race/accents, I am fully aware that there are other parts of the world with a more diverse cultural mixture than South Eastern England.
I'm glad that it's not just a North American/British accent with a bit of a sound effect. Is it the right accent? Well, I'll wait to hear it in context and not just as sound bites before I bash it.

And that's the point.
Instead of adding another obnoxious Earthy accent, why not do something different for the most important race in the entire ME universe?
What could they really do to make the protheans sound more alien besides add a ton of filters to make him difficult to understand without subtitles?
Would we even be having this conversation if he sounded like a regular old American white guy? Maybe he should have sounded British or French. Not cockney or Quebecois, though.

You son of a racist. "obnoxious earthy accent"? How does it feels being such a racist?

But they haven't done it for any other race so why are the Protheans any different? They are just another race with a voice. Why does it need to be all bells and whistles?
I bet people would be going bat***t crazy if they sounded too alien and knocking Bioware for that.

He should sound like a mockingbird.
Maybe the protheans weren't monitoring Earth for humans, but for mockingbirds ...
Remember the Architect in Dragon Age Awakenings? His Voice Actor would have been perfect for Prothy. Also note that they are both odd ones out in their respective universe. Architect the first intelligent darkspawn and Prothy the last surviving Prothean.

Now all I can think of is that old video "How To Kill A Mockingbird", where Mockingbirds were actually giant spaceships that were totally invincible, and there were hundreds more waiting in space...
Its all coming together. The Reapers are Mockingbirds.
You know the bad thing? In the German version, it is 100% sure that he will just speak without any discernible accent at all...
Don't know why but german synchro companies seems to not like accents at all... Happend with Halo Reach, and of course with ME1 and 2...
And a whole lot of other games and movies and such...
I NEVER bothered even installing the german language files. The translations are generally subpar - even when the voices are chosen well. Someone posted a video in here, where the Conduit is described as "die Röhre". It was something that cannot be unheard. ~_~
I was extremely disappointed to say the least. Between North African and Indian, there's no accent as funny or not-so-regal. It's a goddamned joke. I'm hoping more people shared this viewpoint so that BW would take notice and try to change something. I don't want to think of Coming To America whenever Protheans are mentioned. Vigil had the perfect voice; calm and sophisticated. Ugh...
