Yes. They have development costs but it doesn't cost them to produce copies of DLC.
A car can run without a roof. Without windows and without seats. None of these are critical part of a car but they are needed for the car to be considered complete. What you are essentially doing is drawing a arbitary line of what is complete and what isn't based on what Bioware is telling you is complete.

Aren't you doing the same thing? How is your distinction of what is and isn't complete any less arbitrary than mine? :?

Arbitary: 'Based on random choice or personal whim, rather than any reason or system.'
Your line is based upon the whim of Bioware mine in based upon the idea of pre-launch content. which doesn't change which is systematic.

Modern game companies have no morals. They will merge with anyone for the right price...

Bioware has been releasing day one DLC since Dragon Age Origins, and most of it has been free on day one regardless of game type.

Can't say I agree with the practice of charging for day one dlc myself since it means the DLC was to some extent developed along side the actual game and should have already been implemented.  The way most game companies are going now though, DLC on day 1 is becoming the norm.

I read somewhere that the game was getting pretty costly and that the squadmate was getting up there with costs so they decided to make him DLC.

It could be a whole bunch of B.S, but ME3 looks to be the most expensive ME to make.

You seriously think that Bioware would had ran out of cash?
Yes, the production costs are most likely huge, but they are gonna make lots of profit with ME3, no doubt.

It's a valid excuse but I can't prove it and you can't disprove it. We are both speculating, but that may end up being the case.

Or they are greedy dirty hob-goblins, I simply do not know, but I try to consider everything.

Mass Effect 2 has sold over 3 million copies(+ Dlcs, comics etc...). Do the math.  ^_^

I base my observation on the past and how they have handled other DLC characters. None of Bioware's past games has ever had a DLC follower character that has ever been plot-critical, or necessary for a complete game experience, including other launch DLC. You base your complaint on the fact that you have to pay for it on day 1 to get it, rather than day 31, 61, or 91.

This is not a moral issue. It *might* be a consumer ethics issue., but, more likely, it is a marketing issue. Frankly, I don't see how expanding the market for video game products by having additional products on the market can be a bad thing. I love games, and I am happy to pay for them. Vote with your dollars, I very purposely DID NOT purchase DA2 DLC.

-Somehow the dialogue options and the pew pew ingame seem perfectly to match you. My condolences.

I'm guessing that your favorite character in this game is a tie between Udina and the Illusive man, isn't it?

I prefer the Urdnot Wrex method.

Day1 DLC indicates that the company is selling us an unfinished product right from the start.
That is wrong. In so many levels it doesn't even fi into scale.

Not really. To use your crappy carpenter example, it would be like making a plain chair and then having an option to buy a design for it. You don't need a design. How is this "wrong on so many levels". On the problem scale, this is a 1. Right above not owning a Magarita-maker.
