Watching the reaction to the release of the mass effect 3 demo, and the fact that a lot of us have been absolutely hooked on what is basically 2 levels of a multiplayer game (I know that since the demo has come out it is literally all my friends and I have played) a thought occurs to me.
Does the way we've all eaten up this demo give games publishers and developers a new model for how we all consume games. I wonder if, the games market will split off into big, expensive high content single player experiences sold at the price point of the Mass effect 3 CE with stripped back multiplayer versions of the same game promoted by a demo like this as sold as a download only title at a much, much lower price to the broader gaming public.
I can almost see a viable way for something like the mass effect 3 demo to be given away free, with the deveoplers making money from map packs, weapons DLC and such.
It is all the more curious because frankly a lot of people on this board were at best sceptial, at worst hostile to the idea of multi player mass effect, essentially its interesting that the fan base of a single player game can so suddenly jump into a very stripped back MP experience. If I was the mareting bloke looking at the hours being poured into this demo I'd be getting ideas.
I'm not saying this is a good thing, or a bad thing just a bit of idle observation and speculation.
Mass Effect 3 Demo and how we buy games.
