The controversy surrounding the From Ashes DLC has attracted
the attention of a multitude of online sources. The latest to weigh in is Paul
Tassi at Forbes.com, with an article entitled:

Why the Exploitation of Gamers is Our Own Damn Fault.

In it he gives an insightful interpretation of EA’s
marketing policy, and the mindset of the gamer community in general.

Regardless of your opinion regarding this DLC, I recommend
taking the time to look it over. It may cause you to rethink how you view the
issue.

An interesting read. It's a fair point that, at the moment, and likely for some time yet, DLC simply isn't expensive enough to generate a backlash that will lead to a plateau.

I wonder how expensive stuff will have to become before that backlash occurs.

To everyone still complaining that you have to pay to get exclusive CE DLC how about you tell Bioware thank you for even giving you a chance to play the DLC

So True, think the Skyrim CE reached that peak though 150 was just way to much.

Sad but true, this will continue to happen. When do I see it stopping for many of us current gamers? When we get jobs that will be very important to our lives as a whole, as taking care of our own families, paying off mortgages, necessity bills (water, gas), car bills. There will still people who can manage all of the above and still play, but less and less likely will many be able to.

Oh, and school.

I don't plan on becoming less likely to love gaming, but more likely I won't be able to play as much as I currently do while going to school, and later, getting a full-time life.

Yup - "What EA, and many of the other companies are doing, is a simple economic experiment. They know gamers are a loyal group, and they want to see just how far they can push you to shell out money for the “complete” experience of a game you love."

This has been going on for a while now and sad to say; it probably won't stop, at least not for a few years. Think about - look at the Modern Warfare, look at Capcom and some of their recent titles. This isn't new to us, yet we still go for it -

"The truth is, if items like map packs, DLC missions and pre-order bonuses didn’t sell, they wouldn’t exist. Plain and simple."

"And like that, they’ve won. It might not be particularly ethical, as DLC grows more and more intrusive, but the tactic works. For every Total Biscuit who has the moral fortitude to take a stand and say no, there are a hundred thousand other gamers who don’t care enough to keep the $10 in their pocket. As much as I’d love a million people to stand up and boycott the game so that we never have to deal with launch day DLC again, it just isn’t going to happen."

This basically sums up how I feel about the whole situation - "So while I may admire someone like Total Biscuit taking a stand for the gaming industry of yesteryear, I think it’s a somewhat futile effort, and I don’t feel guilty for my upcoming purchase of this “evil” DLC pack. It’s not “right,” in the sense that we are being manipulated to a certain extent, but it’s only because these games are worth it to us. Why else do you think there are people out there who rack up $10,000 bills in Farmville? It may seem downright cruel to sell someone that much virtual farm equipment, but if they’re willing to buy, many would argue you’d be a fool not to."

To be fair, the Skyrim CE was probably the daftest thing Bethesda have ever released. £130 for a plastic dragon statue, a book, and a CD, plus the £25 game.

There was no way on planet earth that such a release made any sense.

If no one bought Oblivion horse armor, throwback jerseys in Madden, and the replay mode in Skate 3, DLC wouldn't have been pushed this far.

Isn't it amazing how, in a forum full of people whining and others telling them to shut up, someone with a well-written and argued article actually garners a positive response?

And yes, I do agree with him.

The comics industry went through a similar thing back in the 90s with a glut of variant covers, cross-overs etc. the weight of it all drove a lot of fans away, be interesting to see what happens when/if games reach the same tipping point.

Not so sure on the comparison to Farmville like games though, those are (arguably) normally designed with monetisation in mind (using a lot of techniques taken from the gambling industry) rather than gameplay/story, so they're a slightly different thing from something like Mass Effect.

Overall though, yeah, if gamers keep buying things, despite complaining about them, then the companies will keep on producing them; especially publicly traded companies that are bound by law to generate profit for shareholders.

I continue to respect companies who don't take the easy option for generating profit (like CD-Projekt) as it shows a greater deal of respect for thier customers, but I do acknowledge that people need to get paid; it's finding the balance that's the tricky part.

Which is why I think it's better to focus on the packaging legislation. Lets see how far they get when they have to decalre every piece of DLC on release on the game packaging.

Maybe, but the dragon, book and CD never made that any different from anyone elses game. I've paid way more than that for a CE.
