Well, Cap'n Obvious works for Forbes, apparently.

I like the article. I think its balanced and interesting.

However for EA it must be like a kick in the groin. Because whilst "the industry" that tries to test our love for games is being mentioned in general terms, the author singles out EA again as a company with a somewhat... tarnished... reputation. Being named the prima facae figurehead of the people who suck gamers dry and exploit the loyalty of gamers... isnt really what EA needs. Its a reputation they have been trying to dodge for years.

Activision has singlehandedly ruined Blizzard.  For that alone they are the all time worst company and cannot be dethroned from it.  EA appears to be trying at times, not so much at other but at least sometimes they try.

If you want a company that is doing it right  look at valve.

EA itself is very bad, they have in the past exploited their employees with no vacations and working huge amounts of hours per week. You can google this if you don't believe me.

I agree with the guy at Forbes. I love his car analogy. I've been making it and other here on the forums and else where for years, it's about time someone else with a real chance to get heard thought it up. We need to keep this towards the top of the forum and point anyone arguing the DLC thing here. Maybe the discussion can start to be real and not about petty junk once we get people thinking clearly about what the real problem is or isn't.

With all due respect,  the car arguement is heavily flawed,  as is the defense of the DLC.

The car arguement fails because I can get a sizeable portion of those ala-carte features for free.  A car is a negotiation,  my last car purchase I got my floor mats for free,  my remote starter at 33% off,  and my extra body pieces at cost.  Because they still make money from me.

There's no negotiation with the game.  They intentionally withold content,  and you have no choice but to pay extra to get the full game.  Kind of like EA did with Dead Space 2,  where content in the retail release was locked away and held hostage unless you had first purchased their prelaunch DLC,  and if you were a PC gamer,  you were outta luck.  There was no way to unlock all of the content on the disc you paid for.

But you are right that what we need to do is get people thinking clearly.  Publishers are running the market into the ground chasing after whatever game sold really well the prior year,  and trying to squeeze more and more money out of the consumers.  The market is dropping very rapidly,  2011 was an 8% drop in sales,  and if you remove COD,  it was a ~20% drop in sales.  January 2012 was a 37% drop in sales from 2011,  and 2011 was a drop in sales,  so we're approaching a ~50% decrease in sales since 2010.

People are tired of it,  gaming is declining,  and if people keep trying to defend abhorent practices and the constant "Me too!" method of game development,  soon there won't be any new games at all for the consoles,  and only indies for the PC.

It's just math.  Go read the NPD reports for 2011 and 2010.  Go read EA's quarterly reports,  specifically the numbers.

This is the road to nowhere.

Counterstrike: Go is the last videogame Im going to buy, and I too am boycotting mass3 due to this whole dlc thing.

I give up on videogames, this isnt going to stop any time soon, and when it does, its going to end in a place i dont want to have anything to do with.

Absolutely true. There's tons of people complaining about the ME3 day 1 DLC, but I have the feeling a large chunk of people getting ME3 will buy it. Even if they were one of the loudest complainers.

That pretty much describes half the industry unfortunately. If you don't believe me, watch this.

It sucks; really really badly. And, unfortunately for us gamers, it's something we can't avoid. Like this crap with Foxconn, consumers can't avoid products made with these conditions unless we go to drastic measures (like playing exclusively indie games until conditions improve).

Sorry EA, caring about money isn't enough. As long as you exist, you will be compared to Valve. And Valve cares about the culture as well as profits. And Valve has proven they can make plenty of profits while still caring about and investing in the culture.

Your move EA, keep caring just about money or you can improve and be more like Valve.

The Prothean Code sounds like a Dan Brown novel in the Mass Effect universe.

"These symbols point to a secret soceity bent on hiding the truth that Jesus Chirst....was a Prothean."

Valve makes all it's extra cash on hats. Hats that they make instead of actual games.

That's not what I call being the good guy.

Do you know why Valve doesn't make a lot of games? Because when they are designing games internally, they are willing and able to scrap entire projects and start anew. No other company can afford to do this because they have to answer to their shareholders. Valve doesn't make games to rush out or cut corners, they make games based on their own internal standards of excellence. There is no public (or private) developer or publisher that can compete with Valve. Simply put, Valve has set the standard and is making everyone else look bad.

No the reason they don't make games. Is because. They are making. HATS.

When was the last time you saw a part 3 of a Valve game? NEVER.

When was the last time you saw Valve release a new hat bundle? JUST LAST WEEK!

Seriously, Gabe Newell has a headwear fetish and someone needs to do something about it.

Sir, if you don't have a hat in Team Fortress 2, you are not playing it right.

Right, clearly GOTY Portal 2 was just a hat bundle. You clearly aren't interested in having a conversation about real facts. So, have fun.

LOL, we thank them by paying.  They're not giving this out for free.

It's easy to say EA is simply taking advantage of response, it sucks because the individual is smart and the population is stupid, leaving little choice if you want to experience the full extent of a game.

Real fact: Valve is hat crazy.

Real fact: Gabe Newell is making bank off of it.

Real fact: STILL NO HALF LIFE 3 OR HALF LIFE 2 EPISODE 3.

It has been like 4 YEARS. That is like 50.000 in Gamer years. I want my damn part 3 already!

I don't have a problem with day 1 dlc, as long as it's not cut content... if prothy really was conceived during some down time while the game was going to cert, so be it. Seems hard to believe though when lines in the script and VOs have been around for a while... It's only a matter of time before we start getting content locked discs as the norm (I'm looking at you, Bad Company 2).

Ya, im buying the dlc. As the article said, I haven't hit the tipping point yet. But I can still voice my displeasure in a product on an internet forum.

It's actually a really simply explained social phenomenon, an easily understandable common example being peer pressure. Got to have the popular thing, got to shell out big to get it. It's really no different than other popular things that happen to be expensive. But with video games the bar wasn't always so high.
